Distribution of economic damages due to climate-driven sea-level rise across European regions and sectors.

Economic costs of climate change are conventionally assessed at the aggregated global and national levels, while adaptation is local. When present, regionalised assessments are confined to direct damages, hindered by both data and models' limitations. This article goes beyond the aggregated analysis to explore direct and indirect economic consequences of sea level rise (SLR) at regional and sectoral levels in Europe. Using a dynamic computable general equilibrium model and novel datasets, we estimate the distribution of losses and gains across regions and sectors. A comparison of a high-end sc

Daily Temperatures and Child Hospital Admissions in Aotearoa New Zealand: Case Time Series Analysis.

The influence of global climate change on temperature-related health outcomes among vulnerable populations, particularly young children, is underexplored. Using a case time series design, we analysed 647,000 hospital admissions of children aged under five years old in New Zealand, born between 2000 and 2019. We explored the relationship between daily maximum temperatures and hospital admissions across 2139 statistical areas. We used quasi-Poisson distributed lag non-linear models to account for the delayed effects of temperature over a 0-21-day window. We identified broad ICD code categories a

Long- and short-run asymmetric impacts of climate variation on tuberculosis based on a time series study.

Distinguishing between long-term and short-term effects allows for the identification of different response mechanisms. This study investigated the long- and short-run asymmetric impacts of climate variation on tuberculosis (TB) and constructed forecasting models using the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and nonlinear ARDL (NARDL). TB showed a downward trend, peaking in March-May per year. A 1 h increment or decrement in aggregate sunshine hours resulted in an increase of 32 TB cases. A 1 m/s increment and decrement in average wind velocity contributed to a decrement of 3600 and 5021 TB

Urohidrosis as an overlooked cooling mechanism in long-legged birds.

Behavioural thermoregulation could buffer the impacts of climate warming on vertebrates. Specifically, the wetting of body surfaces and the resulting evaporation of body fluids serves as a cooling mechanism in a number of vertebrates coping with heat. Storks (Ciconiidae) frequently excrete onto their legs to prevent overheating, a phenomenon known as urohidrosis. Despite the increasingly recognised role of bare and highly vascularised body parts in heat exchange, the ecological and evolutionary determinants of urohidrosis have been largely ignored. We combine urohidrosis data from a scientific

Development of predictive models for boar semen quality.

In this study a prognosis model is developed that predicts sperm quality characteristics based on external factors such as barn climate conditions, seasonality, semen collection frequency, age and breed of artificial insemination (AI) boars. For this a k-fold cross validation framework is used to test the prediction accuracy of a wide range of regression models that are based on different functional forms (linear, log-linear) and estimation techniques (ordinary least squares, seemingly unrelated regression, two-stage least squares estimation and three-stage least squares estimation). The datas

Coastal development and precipitation drive pathogen flow from land to sea: evidence from a Toxoplasma gondii and felid host system.

Rapidly developing coastal regions face consequences of land use and climate change including flooding and increased sediment, nutrient, and chemical runoff, but these forces may also enhance pathogen runoff, which threatens human, animal, and ecosystem health. Using the zoonotic parasite Toxoplasma gondii in California, USA as a model for coastal pathogen pollution, we examine the spatial distribution of parasite runoff and the impacts of precipitation and development on projected pathogen delivery to the ocean. Oocysts, the extremely hardy free-living environmental stage of T. gondii shed in

Thermal imbalance drives avian performance and responses to climate warming.

Thermal performance curves are widely used to predict ectothermic responses to climate warming but are less effective for predicting endotherm performance across environmental conditions because thermoregulation often decouples body temperature from ambient temperature. We develop theory and provide empirical evidence for performance curves in endotherms structured by net sensible heat flux (Q), an integrative index of thermoregulatory imbalance. Using biophysical simulations in tree swallows, we show that performance varies predictably with Q (which we term "QPCs"), thereby explaining variati

Predicting Coral Cover Trends From Local to Broad Spatial Scales.

Modern biodiversity monitoring programs are designed to provide rapid assessments of trends in the abundance and distribution of keystone taxa and timely scientific insights for decision-making. An important consideration when delivering this information to stakeholders is the quantification of uncertainty, which determines the robustness of detecting changes across habitats and regions. In coral reef science, sparse and fragmented monitoring datasets hinder assessments of reef habitat changes. We introduce a comprehensive prediction framework for estimating trends in hard coral cover and asso

Understanding and modeling meteorological drivers of the incidence and spread of malaria in South Africa.

Malaria remains a major challenge globally and in Africa, where climate change is likely to increase its prevalence among communities with low adaptive capacity. The aim of this study was to determine the characteristics of malaria dependence on meteorological drivers, and project incidences and spread of this disease in five district municipalities in Limpopo province, South Africa. We used data from weekly epidemiological reports on hospital admissions in the five municipalities to derive associations with corresponding regional temperature, rainfall, and evapotranspiration. Modeling the interaction of vegetation and sea level rise on barrier island evolution.

Barrier islands provide a first line of defense against ocean flooding and storm surge. Biogeomorphic interactions are recognized as important in coastal system processes, but current barrier island models are primarily dominated by physical processes. Recent research has demonstrated different biogeomorphic states that influence response to sea level rise and other disturbance. Building on this understanding, we present a cellular model utilizing biotic and abiotic processes and their interactions for barrier island evolution. Using the literature and field derived parameters, we model barrie

Thermal dependence and individual variation in tonic immobility varies between sympatric amphibians.

Tonic immobility (TI) is an important antipredator response employed by prey in the last stages of a predation sequence. Evolution by natural selection assumes consistent individual variation (repeatability) in this trait. In ectotherms, which experience variable body temperatures, TI should be repeatable over a thermal gradient to be targeted by natural selection; however, information on thermal repeatability of this trait is missing. We examined thermal repeatability of TI in juveniles of two sympatric amphibians, smooth (Lissotriton vulgaris) and alpine (Ichthyosaura alpestris) newts. Both

On the effects of the ocean on atmospheric CFC-11 lifetimes and emissions.

The ocean is a reservoir for CFC-11, a major ozone-depleting chemical. Anthropogenic production of CFC-11 dramatically decreased in the 1990s under the Montreal Protocol, which stipulated a global phase out of production by 2010. However, studies raise questions about current overall emission levels and indicate unexpected increases of CFC-11 emissions of about 10 Gg ⋅ yr-1 after 2013 (based upon measured atmospheric concentrations and an assumed atmospheric lifetime). These findings heighten the need to understand processes that could affect the CFC-11 lifetime, including ocean fluxes. We eva

Assessing geographic and climatic variables to predict the potential distribution of the visceral leishmaniasis vector Lutzomyia longipalpis in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is an infectious disease caused by the protozoa Leishmania chagasi, whose main vector in South America is Lutzomyia longipalpis. The disease was diagnosed in the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo (ES) for the first time in 1968. Currently, this disease has been considered endemic in 10 municipalities. Furthermore, the presence of L. longipalpis has been detected in eight other municipalities where the transmission has not been reported thus far. In this study, we performed species distribution modeling (SDM) to identify new and most likely receptive areas for VL tra

Prediction of annual dengue incidence by hydro-climatic extremes for southern Taiwan.

Dengue is one of the most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral diseases in the world. An increase in the incidence of dengue is commonly thought to be a consequence of variability of weather conditions. Taiwan, which straddles the Tropic of Cancer, is an excellent place to study the relationship between weather conditions and dengue fever cases since the island forms an isolated geographic environment. Therefore, clarifying the association between extreme weather conditions and annual dengue incidence is one of important issues for epidemic early warning. In this paper, we develop a Poisson

Cool sperm: why some placental mammals have a scrotum.

Throughout the Cenozoic, the fitness benefits of the scrotum in placental mammals presumably outweighed the fitness costs through damage, yet a definitive hypothesis for its evolution remains elusive. Here, I present an hypothesis (Endothermic Pulses Hypothesis) which argues that the evolution of the scrotum was driven by Cenozoic pulses in endothermy, that is, increases in normothermic body temperature, which occurred in Boreotheria (rodents, primates, lagomorphs, carnivores, bats, lipotyphylans and ungulates) in response to factors such as cursoriality and climate adaptation. The model argue

Advances, shortcomings, and recommendations for wind chill estimation.

This article discusses briefly the advances made and the remaining short-comings in the "new" wind chill charts adopted in the US and Canada in 2001. A number of indicated refinements are proposed, including the use of whole body models in the computations, verification of heat exchange coefficients by human experiments, reconsideration of "calm" wind conditions, reconsideration of frostbite threshold levels, the inclusion of cold-related pain and numbness in the charts, etc. A dynamic numerical model is applied to compare the effects of wind speeds, on the one hand, and air temperatures, on t

The impact of climate on Japanese encephalitis.

The aim of this study was to assess the change of seasonal pattern of Japanese encephalitis (JE) cases in the post-vaccination period and to elucidate whether the lagged climate variables (precipitation and temperature) were associated with occurrence of JE after adjustment for seasonal pattern, time trend, geographic areas, pig density, vaccination coverage rate for humans, and time dependence of time-series numbers of JE cases. A total of 287 confirmed JE cases between 1991 and 2005 were collected, together with monthly data on socio-ecological archival data including climate, pig density an

Phosphate depletion is the link between growth, stress and diet in the aetiology of MS.

Predisposition to multiple sclerosis (MS) can originate in adolescence, when nutrient requirement is high and not satisfied and because of too little food intake and/or a poor diet. Growth per se increases the need for phosphate, an often neglected mineral in clinical conditions. The combination of marginal nutrition (either under- or malnutrition) with a negative phosphate balance, physical exertion, infections or other types of stress during puberty can disturb metabolism and result in demyelinization. Phosphate depletion (PD) can lead to neurological complications, which have been character

Timing of breeding in variable environments: tropical birds as model systems.

Animals need to adjust reproductive decisions to environmental seasonality. In contrast to species from the well-studied temperate zones, little is known for tropical birds about the environmental cues that stimulate reproductive activity and the physiological mechanisms that regulate reproduction. I am investigating the environmental and endocrine mechanisms that underlie the timing of reproduction in spotted antbirds from the near-equatorial Panamanian rainforest and in small ground finches from the equatorial arid Galápagos islands. Spotted antbirds live in a fairly predictable seasonal env

Forecasting air pollution potential: a synoptic climatological approach.

This paper describes the development and application of an air pollution potential (APP) forecast model based on a synoptic climatological approach in a heavily industrialized area in Durban, South Africa. The aim of the forecasting procedure, based on a system of orange, red, and all-clear alerts, was to give industry advance warning of periods of poor atmospheric dispersion so that it could take action to reduce emissions. The key meteorological parameter in accurately identifying the commencement of an APP episode was found to be negative surface pressure tendency. Wind direction was the mo
