Retinal Layer Changes With Aging and Cognitive Decline in Rhesus Macaques.

PURPOSE: Nonhuman primates (NHPs) are powerful animal models of aging and neurodegeneration. We hypothesize that age-related retinal thinning measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT) may correlate with cognitive and behavioral decline. Here, we evaluate the relationship between neurocognitive function in rhesus macaques and retinal layer thickness on OCT. METHODS: We evaluated 110 older rhesus macaques (mean age, 19.5 ± 3.3 years; range, 11-30 years) with an array of behavioral assessments, including visual acuity, decision-making, working memory, spatial memory, problem-solving, and so

IS SOCIAL ANXIETY ALWAYS «SOCIAL»? AN INVESTIGATION OF PERSONALITY COGNITIVE AND AUTISTIC FACTORS.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety (SA) disorder is a common psychological condition; however, its boundaries with autism spectrum disorder remain a subject of debate. This study examines the contribution of personality, cognitive, and autistic traits to manifestations of SA in adults. To assess how personality, cognitive, and autistic traits affect SA and to define the impact of autistic features on its development. METHODS: The study included 72 adults (42 women, 30 men) over 18, with different levels of SA and autistic traits. Participants completed several questionnaires: Social Anxiety and Socia

Transition of Physical, Psychological, and Cognitive Frailty and Its' Associated Determinants in Malaysian Older Adults: A 5-Year Follow-up Study.

Frailty, a multifaceted syndrome, affects approximately 26% of older adults globally, yet there are limited data on the prevalence and longitudinal impact of frailty subtypes. Therefore, in this study, we aim to determine the prevalence of physical, psychological, and cognitive frailty, transitions between subtypes, and associated health determinants among Malaysian community-dwelling older adults. This study is part of the longitudinal aging study in Malaysia (LRGS Ageless and TUA). We assessed 815 older adults in 2014, with successful follow-up of 402 participants (mean age: 67.08 ± 5.38 yea

Cognitive inflexibility is linked to abnormal frontoparietal-related activation and connectivity in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Although it was acknowledged that patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) would exhibit cognitive inflexibility, the underlying ne … correlated with activation of rSPL (r = -.328, p = .034, FDRq >.05). Patients with OCD had impaired cognitive flexibility and cautious response strategy. The neural mechanism of cognitive inflexibility in OCD may involve increased activation in the rSPL, as well as hyperconnectivity within the FPN and between the FPN and DMN.

Cognitive functions, emotions and personality in woman with fibromyalgia.

Background: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue and cognitive difficulties. A person with FM suffers from pain diffused throughout the body, and accompanied by the feeling of exhaustion and concentration problems, which often impede even simple tasks. Many studies have shown that people with FM suffer from cognitive disorders, including memory disorders. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between fibromyalgia and cognitive functioning (direct memory, arbitrary attention, learning processes), emotional functi

Dorsal Crypsis and Chemical Defense Jointly Shape Brain Size in Toads.

The cognitive benefits of having a large brain must outweigh its substantial energetic demands for such an organ to evolve. The cognitive buffer hypothesis proposes that large brains facilitate survival in complex environments via flexible behaviors. Because active predator evasion is likely more cognitively demanding than a cryptic lifestyle, we reasoned that the evolution of crypsis could relax selection on brain size. To test this hypothesis, we examined the effect of dorsal crypsis, ventral crypsis, and granular glands on relative total brain evolution in eight toad species. As predicted,

Cocaine enhances figural, but impairs verbal 'flexible' divergent thinking.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that cocaine use will help overcome creative 'blocks' by enhancing flexible thinking. Given that cocaine is likely to enhance dopamine (DA) levels, which in turn are positively associated with divergent thinking (DT); is a possibility that is tested in the present study. Furthermore, the impact of cocaine is tested on convergent thinking (CT), another aspect of creative thinking, which has been reported to be impaired with high DA levels. It was hypothesized that cocaine would enhance DT and impair CT. A placebo-controlled within-subjects study including 24 healthy

Brain network dynamics in the wake-sleep transition reorganize according to task engagement.

Alertness fluctuations and cognitive processing comprise overlapping brain circuits that include frontoparietal, thalamocortical, and sensory pathways. It is unclear how these brain circuits can simultaneously support such disparate but foundational human processes. To develop an integrated framework of consciousness and cognition, it is important to understand how fluctuations in alertness and cognitive processing interact in their shared circuits. In this electroencephalography (EEG)-functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, we assessed individuals who fluctuated between alert and

NMR-based serum metabolomics of dementia patients and search for metabolic biomarkers associated with cognitive decline.

Cognitive decline (CD) and dementia are major age-associated neurodegenerative conditions lacking minimally invasive biomarkers that reflect underlying disease biology. Systemic metabolic alterations closely mirror brain bioenergetic dysfunction and may provide accessible indicators of disease progression. This study applied quantitative 1H NMR-based serum metabolomics to identify metabolic signatures associated with cognitive decline and to evaluate their diagnostic relevance. The serum samples from individuals with cognitive decline (CD, n = 40) and cognitively normal controls (NCD, n = 54)

Visual Cortical Response Variability in Infants at High Familial Likelihood for Autism.

Visual processing undergoes rapid refinement in the first year of life, supporting the emergence of higher-order cognitive, language, and motor functions. Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) provide a non-invasive measure of visual system maturation that may shed light on heterogeneous developmental trajectories among infants at high familial likelihood for autism. Infants with an older sibling with autism spectrum disorder (N = 177 at 6 months; N = 132 at 12 months) participated in the Infant Brain Imaging Study-Early Prediction (IBIS-EP) study. Pattern-reversal VEPs were recorded at 6 and 12 mon
