OBJECTIVES: Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) is widely used in UK dementia care to support cognitive and social functioning. Music therapy (MT) also shows cognitive benefits for people living with dementia (PLwD) but is not routinely available through the NHS due to limited cost-effectiveness evidence. This study evaluated the combined use of CST and MT compared to CST alone, providing a realistic assessment of the added value of MT within standard care.
METHOD: A decision analytic model was constructed using a cost utility framework with a healthcare perspective, over a three-month time h

BACKGROUND: Although VR provides innovative opportunities for nursing education, little is known about how its core features immersion and interactivity shape learners' self-efficacy, motivation, and cognitive processes. Furthermore, the impact of physical discomfort during VR use remains underexplored. This study investigates the effects of immersion and interactivity on affective and cognitive constructs in nursing education using virtual reality (VR), while examining the influence of physical discomfort and the moderating roles of age and gender.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conduc

BACKGROUND: Recent advances have been made in the application of cognitive training strategies as interventions for mental disorders. One novel approach, cognitive control training (CCT), uses computer-based exercises to chronically increase prefrontal cortex recruitment. Activation of prefrontal control mechanisms have specifically been identified with attenuation of emotional responses. However, it is unclear whether recruitment of prefrontal resources alone is operative in this regard, or whether prefrontal control is important only in the role of explicit emotion regulation. This study exa…

BACKGROUND: Age-related cognitive decline typically begins during middle age and persists into old age. In parallel, mood (and, in particular, anxiety and depression) can be a significant predictor of neurodegenerative pathologies. To prevent these negative consequences, mindfulness trainings were used to improve mood and executive functioning in middle-aged and older adults. Less is known about cold water immersion, which apparently favors cognitive enhancement and mood restoration.
METHODS: The current pilot study involved a sample of 46 adult participants (63% F; mean age: 60.67 years, SD:

INTRODUCTION: The DUALITY trial recently showed that both integrated and consecutive dual-task training improve dual-task gait velocity, without increasing fall risks in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Gait velocity was the primary outcome; not reported, however, were important gait measures related to the risk of falling such as gait variability. In this secondary analysis, we compared the efficacy of the two training programs with respect to spatiotemporal outcome parameters.
METHODS: 121 PD patients (Hoehn and Yahr stage II-III while ON medication) were randomly assigned to either

Social skills training has proved to be effective in increasing the social competence of chronic mental patients. The authors describe three models of social skills training, all of which involve role playing by the patient and modeling, prompting, feedback, and reinforcement by the therapist. Many patients can benefit from the basic training model. For patients functioning at a higher level, the problem-solving model provides general strategies for dealing with a variety of social situations. The attention-focusing model, designed for highly distractible and withdrawn patients, teaches skills

Neurofeedback training (NFT) is a non-invasive method and has been shown to be effective for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and various psychiatric disorders. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of NFT for patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) or Vascular Diseases (VD), so that we searched research articles from four databases, using the keywords neurofeedback, elderly, MCI, AD, VD, and dementia. As a result, 13 articles were identified regarding the effectiveness of NFT in patients with MCI and AD. Although each study di

For the first time in neurobiology-related issues, the synergistic spatial dynamics of EEG and fMRI (BOLD phenomenon) was studied during cognitive alpha biofeedback training in the operant conditioning mode (acoustic reinforcement of alpha-rhythm development and stability). Significant changes in alpha-rhythm intensity were found in T6 electrode area (Brodmann area 37). Brodmann areas related to solving alpha-training tasks and maximally involved in the formation of new neuronal network were middle and superior temporal gyri (areas 21, 22, and 37), fusiform gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus (areas

Adaptive behavior relies on the ability to effectively and efficiently ignore irrelevant information, an important component of attentional control. The current research found that fundamental difficulties in ignoring irrelevant material are related to dispositional differences in trait propensity to worry, suggesting a core deficit in attentional control in high worriers. The degree of deficit in attentional control correlated with the degree of difficulty in suppressing negative thought intrusions in a worry assessment task. A cognitive training procedure utilizing a flanker task was used in…

In the current study, variables grounded in social cognitive theory with athletes with disabilities were examined. Performance, training, resiliency, and thought control self-efficacy, and positive (PA) and negative (NA) affect were examined with wheelchair basketball athletes (N = 79). Consistent with social cognitive theory, weak to strong significant relationships among the four types of self-efficacy (rs = .22-.78) and among self-efficacy and affect (rs = -.40-.29) were found. Basketball players who were efficacious in their ability to overcome training barriers were also confident in thei

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressively and incurably neurodegenerative disorder with cognitive dysfunction (e.g., memory decline). Exercise intervention, such as aerobic and resistance training, has increasingly been accepted as a feasible strategy to improve cognitive function. However, the potential neurobiological mechanism of exercise-induced cognitive benefits requires further investigation, especially the combined regime (i.e., aerobic + resistance training) recommended by the World Health Organization guidelines on physical activity. Against this background, we aimed to
