A Retrospective Cohort Study of Traumatic Brain Injury-Exposed Military Population and Reported Outcomes and Recovery: A Military Traumatic Brain Injury Initiative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) occurs after an external force on the brain results in injury and compromised ability to perform daily tasks. It is estimated that TBI affects 3-4 million people annually in the U.S. Military service members (SMs) are at higher risk of experiencing a TBI because of unique risk factors and recovery can also be different compared to civilians. This work focuses on a retrospective analysis of data in SMs providing an epidemiological description of TBI presentation and outcomes. METHODS: From 2010 to 2020, the Military Traumatic Brain Injury Initiative (

Diagnosis, Prevalence, Awareness, Treatment, Prevention, and Control of Hypertension in Cameroon: Protocol for a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Clinic-Based and Community-Based Studies.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension holds a unique place in population health and health care because it is the leading cause of cardiovascular disease and the most common noncommunicable condition seen in primary care worldwide. Without effective prevention and control, raised blood pressure significantly increases the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, chronic kidney disease, heart failure, dementia, renal failure, and blindness. There is an urgent need for stakeholders-including individuals and families-across the health system, researchers, and decision makers to work collaboratively for improvin

Efficacy and Postoperative Complication Rates of Different Surgical Approaches for Calcaneal Fractures: A Network Meta-analysis.

CONTEXT: Calcaneal fractures (CFs) are the most common kind of tarsal fracture. The choice of surgical approach is a key element in the management of CFs, but the best method remains in dispute. Also, no single approach is appropriate for all kinds of CFs. OBJECTIVE: The study intended to evaluate the relationship between six surgical approaches for clinical treatment of CFs and prevention of postoperative complications, to provide an evidence-based approach for treatment. DESIGN: The research team performed a meta-analysis using the data from a previously published review and updating that

Discrepancies Between Patient-Reported Discomfort and Clinical Documentation in Postoperative Care of Central Venous Catheters After Surgery: A Prospective Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Central venous catheters are vital in the peri- and postoperative period for patients undergoing abdominal surgery but are associated with risks such as catheter related infections. Signs of infection, like tenderness and induration at the insertion site, are important to recognize, as they may precede catheter-related infections, but are often neglected. The aim was to compare surgical patients' experience of central venous catheter with the nursing documentation. METHODS: Data was collected from short patient interviews and by reviewing electronic health record documenta

Gait-to-Contact (G2C): A Novel Deep Learning Framework to Predict Total Knee Replacement Wear from Gait Patterns.

PURPOSE: Total knee replacement (TKR) is the most common inpatient surgery in the US. Studies leveraging finite element analysis (FEA) models have shown that variability of gait patterns can lead to significant variability of wear rates in TKR settings. However, FEA models can be resource-intensive and time-consuming to execute, hindering further research in this area. This study introduces a novel deep learning-based surrogate modeling approach aimed at significantly reducing computational costs and processing time compared to traditional FEA models. METHODS: A published method was used to g

Preparation of a Regioselective Quercetin-3-palmitate and Its Using for Boosting Cooking Oil Stability.

Due to over worldwide use of frying oil, and due to its oxidation and deterioration after the usage for short time, huge oil amounts are wasted. So, most attempts are aimed to increase oil stability. Quercetin is a common name for the lipophobic strong natural phenolic antioxidant 2-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one. Thus, its solubility had been improved by converting it to a lipophilic compound via its appending to a fatty acid residue. So, regioselectively 2-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-3-[Hexadecanyl]oxychromen-4-one commonly named as (Quercetin-3-palmitate)

Reduced PRF1 enhancer methylation in children with a history of severe RSV bronchiolitis in infancy: an association study.

BACKGROUND: Acute lower respiratory tract infection is the commonest disease affecting children under five worldwide. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is among the most common causative pathogens. Epidemiological data suggest an association between severe viral respiratory infections in infancy and increased incidence of childhood wheeze and asthma. DNA methylation is involved in immune cell differentiation and identity. It provides an avenue for environmental influences on the genome and therefore has potential as a marker for sustained effects of infectious insults. In this study we investi

Gabapentinoids for chronic low back pain: a protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

IntroductionChronic low back pain (CLBP) is a common condition and causes significant pain, distress and disability across the world. It is multifactorial in aetiology and is challenging to manage. Although the underlying mechanism of pain is predominantly non-specific, many argue that there is a substantial neuropathic pain element. Neuropathic pain is more severe, with significant disability. Gabapentinoids, including gabapentin and pregabalin, have proven efficacy in some neuropathic pain conditions. Despite no clear evidence, a substantial population of patients with CLBP are treated with

Clinical and biological predictors of response to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT): a review.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), developed in the 30's by Bini and Cerletti, remains a key element of the therapeutic armamentarium in psychiatry, particularly for severe and life-threatening psychiatric symptoms. However, despite its well-established clinical efficacy, the prescription of ECT has declined constantly over the years due to concerns over its safety (cognitive side effects) and an increasingly negative public perception. As for other treatments in the field of psychiatry, ECT is well suited to a personalized approach that would increment its efficacy, as well as reducing the impa

High-resolution photoacoustic imaging of ocular tissues.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and ultrasound (US) are methods widely used for diagnostic imaging of the eye. These techniques detect discontinuities in optical refractive index and acoustic impedance, respectively. Because these both relate to variations in tissue density or composition, OCT and US images share a qualitatively similar appearance. In photoacoustic imaging (PAI), short light pulses are directed at tissues, pressure is generated due to a rapid energy deposition in the tissue volume and thermoelastic expansion results in generation of broadband US. PAI thus depicts optical ab

Influence of soft tissue composition and arm diameter on fracture strain in simulated humeral shaft fractures undergoing functional bracing.

INTRODUCTION: Functional bracing is a common non-operative treatment for humeral shaft fractures. The effects of patient-specific soft tissue characteristics on fracture site biomechanics during bracing are poorly understood and may alter healing. This study leveraged finite element analysis (FEA) to characterize the impact of arm diameter and muscle-adipose composition on fracture site strain during bracing. In conjunction with other factors, researchers and clinicians may apply these findings toward optimizing outcomes in patients with humeral shaft fractures. METHODS: Nine humerus FEA mode

The role of gut microbiota in autoimmune thyroid diseases: nutritional determinants and diet-based modulation.

Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD), primarily Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease, represent the most common organ-specific autoimmune disorders and remain a significant clinical challenge due to their chronic course, frequent comorbidities, and limited options for causal treatment. In recent years, increasing attention has been directed toward the gut microbiota as a potential modulator of immune tolerance and endocrine autoimmunity. Accumulating evidence suggests that alterations in gut microbial composition and function may contribute to immune dysregulation, intestinal barrier dysf

Effect of dietary zinc supplementation on the gastrointestinal microbiome and host gene expression in the Shank3B-/- mouse model of autism spectrum disorder.

Shank gene variants are implicated in ~1% of people with autism, and mice lacking Shank3 exhibit autism-like behaviours. Zinc deficiency and gastrointestinal problems can be common among people with autism, and zinc is a key element required for SHANK protein function and gut development. In Shank3B-/- mice, a supplementary zinc diet reverses autism-like behaviours. We hypothesise that dietary zinc may alter the gut microbiome, potentially affecting the gut-microbiome-brain axis, which may contribute to changes in autism-like behaviours. To test this, four types of gastrointestinal samples (il

Finite element analysis of vertebroplasty in the osteoporotic T11-L1 vertebral body: Effects of bone cement formulation.

Vertebral compression fractures are one of the most severe clinical consequences of osteoporosis and the most common fragility fracture afflicting 570 and 1070 out of 100,000 men and women worldwide, respectively. Vertebroplasty (VP), a minimally invasive surgical procedure that involves the percutaneous injection of bone cement, is one of the most efficacious methods to stabilise osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. However, postoperative fracture has been observed in up to 30% of patients following VP. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effect of different injectable bone
