Communicating about microbicides with women in mind: tailoring messages for specific audiences.

INTRODUCTION: Current HIV prevention options are unrealistic for most women; however, HIV prevention research has made important strides, in … greatly influence HIV prevention for women. HIV risk perception and the ability to consistently use condoms and other prevention products often vary by partner type. Women in stable relationships find condom use challenging because they connote a lack of trust. However, women in other contexts are often able to negotiate condom use, though they may face c …

Modeling the impact of changing sexual behaviors with opposite-sex partners and STI testing among women and men ages 15-44 on STI diagnosis rates in the United States 2012-2019.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the potential contributions of reported changes in frequency of penile-vaginal sex (PVS), condom use and STI screening to changes in gonorrhea and chlamydial diagnoses from 2012 to 2019. METHODS: An agent-based model of the heterosexual population in the U.S. simulated the STI epidemics. Baseline was calibrated to 2012 diagnosis rates, testing, condom use, and frequency of PVS. Counterfactuals used behaviors from the 2017-2019 NSFG, and we evaluated changes in diagnosis and incidence rates in 2019. RESULTS: Higher testing rates increased gonorrhea and chlamydia diagnos

Falling short of universal access to reproductive health: unintended pregnancy and contraceptive use among Mexican women with HIV.

A favourable context for women with HIV to prevent unintended pregnancy is a cornerstone of reproductive rights and will contribute to achieving universal access to reproductive health, a Millennium Development Goal target. This analysis explores the reproductive trajectories of Mexican women with HIV post-diagnosis and their access to reproductive counselling and use of contraceptives. In-depth interviews and short surveys were conducted with women of reproductive age living with HIV. Results indicate that sexual and reproductive health counselling in HIV care focuses on the male condom and d

Factors associated with unprotected anal intercourse and age among men who have sex with men who are gay bar customers in Osaka, Japan.

BACKGROUND: HIV infections among men who have sex with men (MSM) are increasing in Japan. METHOD: An anonymous self-administered questionnaire among clients of a gay bar in Osaka was used to analyse the relationship between age and unprotected anal sex (UAI). RESULTS: The highest rate of UAI was reported among those aged ≥45 (73.3%), followed by the ≤24 (60.7%), 25-34 (56.3%) and 35-44 (54.0%) age groups (P=0.01). In multivariate analysis, UAI was related to sex with six or more sexual partners among those aged ≤24 (adjusted odds ratio (AOR), 4.88; confidence interval (CI), 1.21-19.74), bise

Perceived peer safer sex norms and sexual risk behaviors among substance-using Latino adolescents.

We investigated the association between perceived peer norms and safer sexual behaviors among substance using Latino youth. Between 2005 and 2006, cross-sectional data were collected from 92 Latino adolescents recruited from clinic- and community-based settings in two U.S. cities. Separate multivariate logistic regression models were used to assess the relationship between perceived peer norms around safer sex and two different outcomes: consistent condom use and multiple sexual partnerships. Among these participants, perceived peer norms encouraging safer sex were associated with consistent c

The connection between young women's body esteem and sexual assertiveness.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Healthy sexuality includes having positive feelings about one's body and developing positive romantic relationships. Previous research predicts that women dissatisfied with their bodies may be less likely to enforce their rights of sexual autonomy (i.e., sexual assertiveness). DESIGN: We assessed whether the body esteem of young women was related to their reports of sexual assertiveness. Young women from local colleges (N = 127) completed a questionnaire that included demographics, self reported weight and height, sexual history, along with body esteem and sexual assertivenes

Clients of female sex workers: a population-based survey of China.

The control of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI) is a challenge in China, with female sex workers (FSW) and male clients suspected as bridge groups. This study used a 2006 national probability survey of 2,707 adult men. Among men 15-49 years old, the prevalence of FSW contacts last year was 4.2% (95% CI, 3.3-5.2) overall, with 7.2% (CI, 5.9-8.7) in urban and 1.8% (CI, 1.0-3.3) in rural areas. In urban areas, the men most at risk for FSW were high income, often traveled, engaged in business entertaining, ages 25-39, and had early sex histories. When compared to men with only w

Psychopathology and transmission risk behaviors in patients with HIV/AIDS.

The role of psychiatric and substance use disorders in HIV transmission has not been fully elucidated, particularly among those living with the virus. We compared sex and drug risk behaviors for 228 HIV+ patients in four diagnostic groups: (1) no diagnosis; (2) psychiatric only; (3) substance dependence only; and (4) co-morbid psychiatric and substance dependence. Significant group differences were observed for having multiple sex partners, condom use, and injection drug use (IDU), but not for sharing of injection equipment. Patients with co-morbid psychiatric and substance disorders reported

Treatment of genital warts - what's the evidence?

Genital warts are usually asymptomatic, and rarely cause discomfort. Once the patient is aware of them the main symptom is their cosmetic appearance and resultant psychological consequences. The ideal treatment outcome would be complete viral eradication, but this is not possible. Treatments focus on the removal of exophytic warts, leaving the surrounding subclinical and latent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection as areas of possible transmission and recurrence. Effective treatment does reduce HPV viral load, so the infection is reduced if not completely eradicated. Treatment is often painful

Sexual factors associated with cytomegalovirus seropositivity in human immunodeficiency virus-infected men. The Seroco Study Group.

BACKGROUND: Many people infected by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) acquire severe cytomegalovirus (CMV) diseases. Factors associated with CMV seropositivity are poorly documented in sexually active HIV-infected men. GOAL: To study CMV seroprevalence in HIV-infected men according to sexual behavior before the diagnosis of HIV seropositivity. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. CMV seroprevalence was studied at enrollment in a prospective cohort of homosexual and heterosexual men infected by HIV through sexual contact. RESULTS: In the study population (n = 723), age, sexual preference, p

Sexually induced dermatoses.

Sexually induced dermatoses (SID) are conditions resulting from sexual activity. Sometimes this can be modified by bacterial infection or systemic disease. Many materials such as medications, cosmetics, perfumes, pads, hygiene, sprays, condoms, etc, may cause sexually induced dermatoses in sexual partners. Sexually induced dermatoses are noninfectious, self-limited conditions.

Fibroepothelial polyp of the glans penis due to pad use for urinary incontinence.

A 78-year-old man was admitted to our urology polyclinic with painless penile mass. The lesion was 3.5 cm in size on the ventral aspect of the penis. He had been using a pad for urinary incontinance for 10 months and said that the lesion had been increasing in size for past 3 months. He underwent a wide local excision under local anesthesia. The histopathologic diagnosis was fibroepithelial polyp. A fibroepithelial polyp of the penis is very rare and strongly linked to long-term condom catheter use. We present a case of fibroepithelial polyp of the glans which is not associated with condom cat

Contraceptives of the future in the light of HIV infection.

The AIDS and sexually transmissible disease pandemics have helped to focus the world's attention on the need for good protection against transmission of infections during sexual intercourse. Most of the highly effective modern contraceptives provide only limited protection against STD transmission, although recent progress with the development of loose-fitting plastic male condoms and new spermicides gives some hope. Urgent attention must continue to be given to contraceptives with STD protective qualities which are under the woman's control. Refinements of the female condom and vaginal sponge…
