BACKGROUND: Single-port surgery (LESS) is a new method of minimally invasive laparoscopic urology. These modern methods reduce the tissue trauma of the patient; however, high demands are placed on the surgeon. We report our initial clinical experience.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eight patients with different pathologies in the abdomen and retroperitoneum (nephrectomy, renal cyst resection) were treated with an abdominal LESS access and two patients with vaginal NOS (natural orifice surgery) access. Previously, we obtained extensive experience with the setup and implementation in animal studies. Th

For the treatment of vesicoureteral reflux, the introduction of vesicoscopic procedures offers new perspectives for improving patient comfort and quality. Our aim was to examine whether minimally invasive vesicoscopic cross-trigonal ureteral reimplantation (VCUR) would meet expectations. Between 2012 and 2021, 99 girls and 35 boys with high-grade vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) underwent VCUR. For two boys, we failed to establish the pneumovesicum, leading to conversion to open surgery. The mean age was 4.5 years, ranging from 10 months to 18 years. VCUR was successfully performed in 132 patients,…

BACKGROUND: The incidence of gallstones increases with age and as the proportion of the population 65 years of age and older continues to grow, increased demand for laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) in the geriatric population is likely. LC has advantages over open cholecystectomy, but comparative evaluation of the procedure in elderly patients is lacking.
METHODS: We performed a two-year review of patients undergoing LC at our institution. Demographic information, diagnosis, operation performed, and operative complications were recorded. Patients were placed into two groups by age: 65 years

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopy has been practiced more and more in the management of abdominal emergencies. The aim of the present work was to illustrate retrospectively the results of a case-control 5-year experience of laparoscopic versus open surgery for abdominal emergencies carried out at our institution, especially with regard to whether our attitude toward use of this procedure has changed as compared with the beginning of our laparoscopic emergency experience (1991-2002).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2002 to January 2007 a total of 670 patients underwent emergent and/or urgent laparos

Retrievable inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are commonly placed to prevent pulmonary embolism when anticoagulation is contraindicated. Although guidelines strongly recommend timely removal, many filters become firmly embedded within the caval wall, rendering standard snare retrieval impossible. Advanced techniques are then needed to avoid open surgery. A 43-year-old male with a history of asthma, sleeve gastrectomy, and recent cholecystectomy had a retrievable IVC filter placed four months prior due to a minor IVC injury sustained during surgery. He presented for elective removal. Under gener

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this work was to present a new vesicoscopic technique for treatment of sphincter insufficiency and to evaluate the short-term results.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight children (mean age, 11.7 years), 4 with non-neurologic and 4 with neurologic sphincter incontinence, were operated on. All had previously failed open surgery. In all, leak-point pressure was below 30 cm H(2)O. Mean follow-up was 5.2 months. In the supine position, three ports were inserted into the bladder under direct visual control. A U-shaped incision was made in the mucosa around the bladder neck, leavi

Pancreaticoduodenectomy remains among the most technically demanding abdominal operations because of complex vascular dissection, multiple reconstructions, and persistent risk of procedure-specific morbidity. Robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy (RPD) has been developed to extend minimally invasive surgery to pancreatic head and periampullary diseases, offering stable three-dimensional visualization, articulating instruments, and improved suturing ergonomics. However, technical feasibility alone does not establish broad clinical value. This structured narrative review maps current evidence on RPD a

INTRODUCTION: Peritoneal tears (PTs) are an intraoperative complication that may occur during extraperitoneal space opening or hernia sac dissection in laparoscopic total extraperitoneal hernia repair (TEP) surgeries and are an important cause of conversion. There is also no consensus on the prevention and causes of this condition in TEP. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors underlying the development of peritoneal tears during TEP.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 288 consecutive patients who underwent TEP between May 2019 and December 2023. All data were collected retros

Liver transplantation : official publication of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the International Liver Transplantation Society2016eng
Right hepatectomy for a living liver donor via a pure minimally invasive approach is a challenging procedure and only a few cases have been reported. Between May 2013 and August 2015, 13 patients underwent robotic living donor right hepatectomy in our institute, and 54 patients received open surgery. In this series, no conversion was conducted for robotic donor right hepatectomy. The 2 groups shared similar blood loss (169 versus 146 mL), complication rates (7.7% versus 9.3%), and recovery of donor liver function (peak alanine aminotransferase, 269 versus 252 IU/mL). The robotic group needed l

BACKGROUND: Open tibial shaft fractures require timely management of both skeletal instability and soft-tissue injury. Temporary external fixation is useful for early stabilization, but prolonged retention without progression to definitive fixation may increase the risk of delayed union and other complications. This case illustrates a patient-driven delay from the preferred staged pathway and subsequent salvage after restoration of mechanical stability and biological support.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old man sustained a Gustilo-Anderson Type II open fracture of the right tibial shaft with

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is widely regarded as the gold-standard for the management and treatment of gallbladder disease. Traditionally, LC has been performed using multiple small incisions to allow placement of trocars and instruments. However, single-incision laparoscopic surgery has emerged as a potential alternative, purportedly offering cosmetic and recovery benefits, though the evidence for these advantages remains inconsistent in the literature.
METHODS: Nine studies published between 2010 and 2019, enrolling a total of 1,884 patients, were eligible for inclusion.

BACKGROUND: An important aim of high tibial osteotomy (HTO) is to prevent or delay the need for total knee replacement (TKR). We sought to estimate the frequency and timing of conversion from HTO to TKR and the factors associated with it.
METHODS: We prospectively evaluated patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee who underwent medial opening wedge HTO from 2002 to 2014 and analyzed the cumulative incidence of TKR in July 2019. The presence or absence of TKR on the HTO limb was identified from the orthopedic surgery reports and knee radiographs contained in the electronic medical records

BACKGROUND: Nonpalpable undescended testes (NPT) constitute 20%-30% of undescended testes, and its management has been a challenge both in diagnosis and treatment. Worldwide, laparoscopy is the current gold standard of management. In Nigeria, the management of NPT has largely been by open surgery with consequent high morbidity. In Nigeria, the trend is changing from a largely open management with its attendant high morbidity, to laparoscopic management which is the current worldwide gold standard of care.
AIM: This study aims to classify the laparoscopic features of NPT and determine the outc

Posterior retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy is a new minimally invasive method. It represents an alternative to conventional open procedures and laparoscopic techniques. Between July 1994 and November 1995 a total of 30 retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomies were performed on 27 patients. In 24 patients, unilateral tumors were seen (size 1-7 cm): seven Cushing adenomas, five Conn adenomas, seven pheochromocytomas, four hormonally inactive tumors, one cyst. Three patients suffered from Cushing syndrome with bilateral adrenal gland hyperplasias (two inoperable pituitary gland tumors, one bronchia

We present the first documented case in Spain of a large midline incisional hernia treated with botulinum toxin A (Botox A) in conjunction with robot-assisted transversus abdominis release utilising the Hugo robot-assisted surgery (RAS) by Medtronic (Minneapolis, MN, USA). The patient, a woman in her late 40s, was referred to our outpatient clinic due to two significant midline incisional hernias which were causing abdominal discomfort and constipation. Her medical history included a laparoscopic myomectomy that had been converted to open surgery, resulting in a sub-umbilical incision. This le
