Where is the lifestyle medicine in the Canadian undergraduate medical education curricula? A content analysis.

BACKGROUND: Lifestyle Medicine (LM) focuses on preventing and managing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) through evidence-based behavioural and therapeutic interventions. Despite the established efficacy of LM, its integration into Canadian undergraduate medical education (UGME) remains largely unexamined. METHODS: We employed a deductive and inductive summative content analysis methodology. We collected publicly available course and program descriptions for each UGME program across Canada. Further, we contacted deans/curriculum leads for additional curriculum documentation. Documents were cod…

The pain education paradox and validation gap.

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare professionals routinely manage pain, medicine's most common complaint, yet receive critically inadequate pain education, often less than 1 % of curriculum hours, despite pain being present in up to 80 % of clinical consultations. Current pain education programs claim to employ evidence-based approaches. Yet, they operate within a fundamental validation crisis: we cannot validate what constitutes effective practitioner competency because we lack evidence that improved practitioner knowledge translates into better patient outcomes. PURPOSE: This paper addresses the vali…

Comparison of the study performance of dental students in different subfields of neuroanatomy at the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and evaluation of the neuroanatomy course in the fourth preclinical semester.

INTRODUCTION: The dentist's main working area is the head and neck region, which is innervated by the cranial nerves. On a daily basis, dentists must administer local anaesthesia to ensure pain-free treatment and differentiate between dental pain and neuropathies to avoid mistreatment. Therefore, neuroanatomical training, especially on the cranial nerves, is of immense importance for clinical practice. In order to adopt the curriculum, it is essential to constantly evaluate the quality of the training and to investigate whether there is a correlation between the students' performance and the r…

An Integrative Review of Micro-Credentials and Digital Badges for Pharmacy Educators.

Micro-credentials (MCs) and digital badges (DBs) have gained popularity in recent years as a means to supplement traditional degrees and certifications. MCs and DBs can play a significant role in supporting student-centered learning by offering personalized and flexible learning pathways, emphasizing real-world relevance and practical skills, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth. However, barriers currently exist within health professions education, including pharmacy education, that could limit the full adoption and implementation of MCs and DBs. Research on the use of MC

Coaching in Competence by Design: A New Model of Coaching in the Moment and Coaching Over Time to Support Large Scale Implementation.

Coaching is an increasingly popular means to provide individualized, learner-centered, developmental guidance to trainees in competency based medical education (CBME) curricula. Aligned with CBME's core components, coaching can assist in leveraging the full potential of this educational approach. With its focus on growth and improvement, coaching helps trainees develop clinical acumen and self-regulated learning skills. Developing a shared mental model for coaching in the medical education context is crucial to facilitate integration and subsequent evaluation of success. This paper describes t

Modern medical schools curricula: Necessary innovations and priorities for change.

Medical schools' curricula have expanded over the decades to incorporate important new medical breakthroughs and discoveries. Their current focus and overall structures remain, however, stubbornly captive of early 20th-century thinking, with changes having been undertaken in a piecemeal fashion. Indeed, since the notable Flexner reform in 1910, medical schools' study plans have suffered successive and typically always partial adjustments which have failed to keep up with scientific, technological and sociological change. This difficulty may be attributable to the well-known conservatism of med

SOCIUS Mentoring-A Novel Course to Encourage Students for a Career as Surgical Oncologists.

Surgical disciplines are affected by an increasing shortage of young doctors. Studies show that formerly interested students decide against a career in surgical disciplines at the end of their studies or during practical year. Measures to counteract this development are urgently needed. As a joint project between gynecology, urology, and general surgery, SOCIUS mentoring was designed to prepare and encourage students for a career in surgical oncology. The structured curriculum of SOCIUS mentoring contains six modules, including surgical skills, soft skills, mentoring, theory, clinical visitati…
