Intracranial dermoid cysts, rare congenital lesions originating from ectodermal elements during neural tube closure, are explored in the context of a 45-year-old female presenting with a sudden-onset severe headache, nausea, and vomiting. A thorough neurological examination revealed no focal deficits, prompting a computed tomography scan that identified multiple extra-axial intracranial fat density lesions indicative of dermoid cysts. Laboratory and cerebrospinal fluid analysis confirmed inflammatory changes, characterized by an increased white blood cell count. Successful surgical interventio

Steatocystoma multiplex (SM) is an uncommon cutaneous disorder characterised by multiple intradermal cysts distributed over the trunk and proximal extremities. This condition affects both genders and is often inherited as an autosomal dominant trait, although sporadic cases have been described. This report describes the mammographic and sonographic features of the cysts, which presented as breast lumps, for evaluation. The cysts appeared as numerous well-circumscribed, radiolucent nodules with thin radiodense rims on mammography. On sonography, the cysts could be hypoechoic, isoechoic or demon

PURPOSE: To evaluate the long-term results of single-session alcohol sclerotherapy of symptomatic benign liver cysts.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 23 cysts in 19 patients were treated by single-session percutaneous catheterization and injection of 96% ethanol. Evaluation of long-term results was possible in 11 cysts (volume 200-2,700 ml, mean 1,317 ml) in 11 patients. Time of observation was 12-67 months, mean 38.3 months.
RESULTS: The reduction of volume was 93-100% (mean 98%). The re-accumulation of fluid after therapy seen in 9 patients proved to be transitory. Except for pain there were no comp

Out of 53,459 women undergoing mammography, 434 pneumocystographic examinations were performed in 338 patients. Thirteen benign and 13 malignant intracystic tumors were detected, for a frequency of 6.0%. Intracystic cancers comprised 1.3% of all malignant tumors. Neither visual nor cytological examination of cyst fluid was sufficient to detect or rule out cancer, and the authors feel that pneumocystography is the only reliable method. Excision is the preferred therapy, and histological examination is the definitive method of differentiating benign from malignant tumors. In more than 97% of cas…

We intended to describe a case of cerebral coenurosis in a long-tailed goral, Naemorhedus caudatus, from Hwacheon-gun, Gangwon-do (Province), in the Korea. The goral, a 10-year-old male, was suffering from neurological symptoms, such as turning the circle to one side without lifting the head straight, and died at 30 days after admission to the wildlife medical rescue center in Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do. A fluid-filled cyst was detected in the left cerebral hemisphere by computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. The cyst removed from the deceased goral was transparent, about 3×3 cm in

Benign lymphoepithelial cyst (BLC), also known as branchial cyst, is an infrequent lesion usually occurs in the parotid gland or the lateral cervical area including lymph nodes. It occurs due to the process of lymphocyte-induced cystic ductular dilatation and is always diagnosed postoperatively by histopathological examination (HPE). These dysontogenetic lesions are usually found in the lateral neck but can also be located in the salivary glands, mostly in the parotids. A 35-year-old male reported to Government Dental College, Indore, before 3 years, with a soft, nontender, gradually increasin

A case of periodic sweating with multifocal dystonia is reported in a 60-year-old woman. At the age of 48 years, she presented with involuntary twisting of the lower face on the right. Six months later she noticed similar movements in the head and right arm. Four years later she began having attacks of generalized sweating over the whole face, anterior region of the trunk and both arms. The attacks occurred hourly each and every day. They lasted for about 10 min and were followed by voluntary urinary voiding. The biochemical and laboratory investigations showed no abnormalities except for the

PURPOSE: Current algorithms for automated computer interpretation of optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging of patients suffering from neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) mostly rely on fluid detection. However, fluid detection itself and correct interpretation of the fluid currently limits diagnostic accuracy. We therefore performed a detailed analysis of the requirements that would have to be met for fluid detection approaches. We further investigated if monitoring retinal volume would be a viable alternative to detect disease activity.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis and

INTRODUCTION: Deep vein thrombosis of the upper-extremity (ueDVT) is often caused by trauma to the subclavian vein, central venous line and hypercoagulation disorders.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of a ueDVT due to retrosternal goiter compressing the right brachiocephalic vein. Low molecular weight heparin was initiated subcutaneously and fluid was aspirated from the thyroid cyst causing an immediate improvement. Cytology detected no malignancy. At eight-month follow-up, the patient showed complete resolution of her symptoms.
DISCUSSION: In general, the optimal treatment should include rem

A 43-year-old woman with autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) received octreotide for 12 months, and this was associated with a 6.3% reduction in liver volume, an 8% reduction in total kidney volume and stabilization of renal function. There was also a reduction of cyst size in fibrocystic disease of breast. These data suggest that the cyst fluid accumulation in different organs from patients with ADPKD is a dynamic process which can be reversed by octreotide. This is the first report of a case of simultaneous reduction in hepatic, renal and breast cystic volume with preservati…

We report the MR findings of parapharyngeal branchial cleft cyst manifesting as multiple, lower cranial nerve palsies in a 35-year-old woman. On MR images, a well-marginated cystic mass was detected in the right parapharyngeal space, with displacement of both the right internal carotid artery and the right internal jugular vein on the posterolateral side. The cyst contained a whitish fluid that was slightly hyperintense on T1-weighted images and slightly hypointense to CSF on T2-weighted images. No enhancement on contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images was present. The right side of the tongue sh

We studied six cases of intracranial meningioma with cyst formation. Manifestations included focal neurologic signs (four cases), seizures (three cases), headache (three cases), and personality changes (two cases). CT revealed a cystic enhancing supratentorial lesion in five cases. Angiographic changes of meningioma were observed in only three cases, and correct preoperative diagnosis was made in only half the cases so studied. Histologically, all lesions were syncytial meningiomas. Cyst fluid was always xanthochromic, acellular, and highly proteinaceous. The variety of anatomic configurations…

A diffuse, bubblelike, high-density epidermoid cyst of the cerebellopontine angle is described as seen on CT scanning. The high density was attributed to high protein concentration of the cystic fluid due to a proliferative and exudative defense reaction to a "minor leak" of the lipidic material through the capsule, verified by Sudan black B stain. A description of the appearance of the tumor on computerized tomography, based on 42 cases of intracranial epidermoids reported in the literature, is discussed. To our knowledge this is the first morphological documentation of spontaneous leakage of

Report on a rarity, consisting in the anatomic connexion of a parotid cyst with serous fluid and a congenital dysontogenesis near the ear. The latter will reduced to remains of the ectoderm of the first branchial cleft, remaining during the migration of the ear-"anlage" to the upper dorsal direction and interpreted as equivalent of a neck-ear-fistula. During embryogenesis apparently happens a collision between the remains of ectoderm and the ducts of the parotid-"anlage", developing from the buccal cavity. Clinical aspects, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and treatment were discussed. The ma

Odontogenic cysts, commonly detected during routine examinations involving head and neck imaging such as orthopantomograms and computed tomography (CT), are classified into two groups: developmental and inflammatory. Radicular cysts, which belong to the inflammatory group, originate from odontogenic epithelium, while dentigerous cysts of developmental origin are observed as a result of peri-coronal expansion of fluid in the dental follicle. The diagnosis and identification of odontogenic cysts rely on clinical, radiographic, and histological evaluations. This study aimed to demonstrate the exp

A less invasive transsphenoidal approach with a keyhole dural opening for intrasellar arachnoid cysts is described. This approach was used to address seven sellar cystic lesions with suprasellar extension; they were six intrasellar arachnoid cysts (IACs) and one Rathke's cleft cyst (RCC). In all cases, preoperative MRI revealed cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) intensity on both T1- and T2-weighted images. On preoperative contrast-enhanced MRI, five of the six IACs manifested posterior displacement of the flattened pituitary gland toward the dorsum sellae; one of the six IACs and the RCC exhibited a f

BACKGROUND: Abdominal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pseudocyst is an uncommon but important complication of ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunts. While individual articles have reported many cases of abdominal CSF pseudocyst following VP shunts, no case of a hemorrhagic abdominal pseudocyst after VP shunts has been reported so far.
CASE PRESENTATION: This article reports a 68-year-old woman with a 4-month history of progressive abdominal pain and distention. She denied any additional symptoms. A VP shunt was performed 15 years earlier to treat idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus and no other abd

BACKGROUND: Hydatid disease affects most commonly the liver, and rupture into the bile ducts is a frequent complication, occurring in 5% to 25% of cases. These complications can cause major clinical problems either preoperatively or postoperatively with post-resectional abscess or prolonged biliary fistula. We reviewed our experience with preoperative endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC) and the diagnosis of major cyst-biliary fistula.
METHODS: During a 7-year period, 78 patients underwent surgery for hepatic hydatid disease. Ten patients, in whom a major intrabiliary rupture of the cy

We herein report a case of sudden death from massive mucinous cystadenoma of the ovary. A female in her 70s was found dead with an enlarged abdomen. Forensic autopsy was performed to identify the cause of death. Postmortem computed tomography showed a large amount of intra-abdominal fluid pushing against intraperitoneal organs. The deceased was 152 cm in height and weighed 85 kg. The abdomen was enlarged with a girth of 133 cm. A left ovarian cyst was detected and contained 32 L of a dark brown fluid. The uterus and ovaries weighed 1200 g. The heart weighed 400 g, and atherosclerosis was noted
