Recognizing Early Warning Signs of Acute Hypertensive Crisis of the Postpartum Mother: An Important Role for Neonatal Nurses.

A delay in detecting acute hypertensive crisis in postpartum mothers can exacerbate complications in the mother. Neonatal nurses are uniquely qualified to identify postpartum warning signs in mothers while they are in the NICU with their infants. Few research studies have explored the use of neonatal nurse screenings for acute hypertensive crisis in postpartum mothers. NICU nurses screening mothers for postpartum depression has yielded success in improving outcomes, and this model could be translated into screening for acute hypertensive crisis. Further education should be implemented for NICU

Postpartum care--what's new?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The postpartum period is a time of significant emotional, social, and physical change for most women. This review focuses on recent evidence supported by systematic reviews and randomized, controlled trials to guide the care of postpartum women who are otherwise healthy. RECENT FINDINGS: Mental health outcomes are improved with postpartum support in at-risk women. Postpartum depression can be treated either pharmacologically or with counseling; however, exercise and omega-3 fatty acids are emerging as potentially effective alternatives. Intrauterine devices are safe and eff

Preventing Postpartum Anxiety and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Over the Internet: An Open-Trial Pilot Study.

Anxiety disorders are the most common postpartum psychiatric conditions, yet limited research exists on the prevention of postpartum anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Postpartum anxiety leads to significant problems in both mother and child, such as maternal depression, difficulty breastfeeding, interference with parent-infant bonding, and childhood anxiety. In the current study, we tested the feasibility, acceptability, and initial efficacy of an Internet-delivered postpartum anxiety and OCD prevention program, "Preventing Postpartum Onset Distress" (P-POD), in a sample of 15 p

Trajectories of reproductive transition phase mood disorder from pregnancy to postpartum: A Swiss longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms are common in the peripartum period and pose a great risk to the well-being of the mother, the infant, and the entire family. Evidence from longitudinal studies suggests that affected women do not constitute one homogeneous group in terms of severity, chronicity, and onset of symptoms. To account for individual differences regarding the longitudinal course of depressive symptoms from pregnancy to the postpartum period, growth mixture models have proven to be useful. METHODS: We conducted a group-based trajectory modeling analysis to identify perinatal depressiv

Comorbid borderline personality disorders in women with post-partum depression admitted to mother-baby units.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is associated with perinatal depression and parenting difficulties. However, little is known about the characteristics and specific effects of BPD in women with postpartum depression. This study aimed to explore 1) the sociodemographic, mental health characteristics, and motherhood difficulties in women with a major depressive postpartum episode (MDPE) and a comorbid diagnosis of BPD, compared to those with other personality disorders (other PD) or no PD and 2) whether BPD itself may be an independent risk factor for infant neglect in women with a MDPE. 41
