Seborrhoea is not a feature of seborrhoeic dermatitis.

The sebum excretion rate from forehead skin was measured in 44 patients with classic seborrhoeic dermatitis and 200 control subjects. The mean excretion rate was normal in the 29 men with seborrhoeic dermatitis and significantly reduced in the 15 women with the disease. This study showed that seborrhoeic dermatitis is not usually associated with seborrhoea, and therefore "dermatitis of the sebaceous areas" may be a more accurate term.

Dermatitis herpetiformis: the skin and the gut.

Dermatitis herpetiformis is an intensely itchy, chronic, papulovesicular eruption that is usually symmetrically distributed on extensor surfaces. Histologically, it is characterized by dermal papillary collections of neutrophils and subepidermal vesicle formation. The skin has IgA deposits in areas corresponding to the earliest histopathologic change; that is, at the epidermal-dermal junction. Most patients have an associated asymptomatic gluten-sensitive enteropathy that mimics ordinary gluten-sensitive enteropathy (celiac disease) both morphologically and in its response to gluten protein. T…

Treatment of dermatitis herpetiformis with colchicine.

Oral colchicine therapy was used successfully in the treatment of three patients with dermatitis herpetiformis, although the degree of disease control varied. The condition of a fourth patient did not improve. A trial of colchicine is suggested when conventional therapy with dapsone or sulfapyridine is contraindicated or when a gluten-free diet cannot be employed.

Treatment of dermatitis herpetiformis with cholestyramine.

Two patients with clinically and histologically typical dermatitis herpetiformis showed a dramatic clearing of their skin lesions in association with an oral dose of 4 g of cholestyramine three times a day. Reappearance of the lesions occurred on the discontinuance of the therapy, followed by remission on resumption of cholestyramine. It is postulated that the non-absorbable anion exchange resin, cholestyramine, may have bound and hence blocked absorption of an unidentified compound (possibly gluten, iodine, or endotoxin) critical to the pathogenesis of dermatitis herpetiformis.

Captafol dermatitis in the timber industry.

Captafol is a common cause of dermatitis amongst workers in the timber industry. In a survey of 14 timber treatment plants 23% of 133 workers exposed to captafol gave a history suggestive of occupationally induced dermatitis. Although allergic dermatitis can occur, irritant dermatitis is far more common. Attention to plant and personal hygiene will reduce the prevalence of captafol dermatitis significantly. Recommendations on how to achieve this are made. "The ultimate end...is not knowledge, but action. To be half right on time may be more important than to obtain the whole truth too late."

Seaweed dermatitis: structure of lyngbyatoxin A.

A highly inflammatory and vesicatory substance, lyngbyatoxin A, has been isolated from the lipid extract of a Hawaiian shallow-water variety of Lyngbya majuscula Gomont; its gross structure was determined from chemical and spectral data. Lyngbyatoxin A is closely related to teleocidin B, a poisonous substance associated with several strains of Streptomyces.

Cosmetic dermatitis due to a perfume.

A patient with perfume dermatitis was patch-tested to 94 constituents of perfume and was found to have positive reactions to 12 components. An approach with regard to reducing the prevalence of perfume dermatitis is suggested.
