Radiologist's perspective for the Meckel's diverticulum and its complications.

The Meckel's diverticulum is the commonest congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, often presenting with complications such as gastrointestinal bleeding, intussusception, bowel obstruction and diverticulitis, which are often misdiagnosed. Imaging plays an important role in the early diagnosis and characterization of these conditions and is very helpful in decision making. The Meckel's diverticulum and its complications have myriad presentations and appearances on various imaging modalities. Thus, sound knowledge of the anatomy, embryology, clinical presentation, imaging characteristi…

Meckel's diverticulum incarcerated in a transmesocolic internal hernia.

Intestinal obstruction is a common complication associated with Meckel's diverticulum in adults. The diverticulum itself or its fibrous band can lead to an intestinal volvulus, intussusceptions, or closed-loop obstructions, which require surgery. The incarceration of Meckel's diverticulum in either inguinal or femoral hernia sacs (Littre's hernia) is another, less common, etiology underlying intestinal obstruction. This case report describes a 45-year-old man who had an obstruction associated with a Meckel's diverticulum that passed through a congenital defect in the mesocolon into the right s…

Laparoscopic approach to symptomatic meckel diverticulum in adults.

BACKGROUND: Meckel diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital gastrointestinal malformation found in approximately 2% of the general population. MD manifests in adults as gastrointestinal bleeding, bowel obstruction, intussusception, or perforation in <5% of cases. There is no consensus on the ideal management strategy in symptomatic MD. Therefore, we searched the literature to highlight the role of laparoscopy in diagnosing and treating symptomatic MD. METHOD: We used PubMed, Medline, Google Scholar, Ovid, and Cochrane data search engines looking for articles containing terms such as Me…

Meckel's diverticulum in children, clinical and pathological aspects.

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) represents one of the most common malformations of the digestive tract, being a vestige of the proximal end of omphalo-mesenteric duct, which normally obliterates and atrophiates between the sixth and ninth week of intrauterine life. It is estimated that 2-4% of people are carriers of this malformation. The interest in this organ study lies in the fact that it presents its own non-specific pathology, mimicking a cecal, colon or small intestine pathology. It seems that most MD cases are asymptomatic (AS MD), being arbitrary discovered during surgeries, whereas only a …

Imaging of Meckel's diverticulum in adults: pictorial essay.

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract. It is usually asymptomatic but may present with complications of acute diverticular inflammation, ulceration, hemorrhage, small bowel obstruction, perforation, retained foreign bodies, enterolith formation, and neoplasm development. Thus, the preoperative radiological diagnosis is crucial for proper management of the patients. This article reviews the anatomic and clinical features of Meckel's and describes the role of imaging in the detection of Meckel's and evaluation of its associated pathological…

Zenker's diverticulum: a case report and literature review.

The pharyngeal pouch (Zenker's diverticulum) is a diverticulum of the mucosa of the pharynx, just above the cricopharyngeal muscle (i.e. above the upper sphincter of the oesophagus). It occurs commonly in elderly patients (over 70 year) and the typical symptoms include dysphagia, regurgitation, chronic cough, aspiration and weight loss. We are reporting a case of an oropharyngeal dysphagia due to a Zenker's diverticulum in 75 years old Sudanese man with a chronic history of dysphagia for solids. The pathophysiology of Zenker's diverticulum, clinical presentation, and management are reviewed.

Tracheal diverticulum: a case report and literature review.

PURPOSE: Tracheal diverticulum (TD) is a rare, nonspecific symptom that is commonly associated with other malformations in clinical presentation and appearance on imaging. The case presented and the literature review performed highlight the importance of combining 3 D reconstruction technology and computerized Tomography (CT) results to better characterize TD on the list of differential diagnoses of patients. METHODS: The case described is of a 44-year-old male with a 1-year history of repeatedly coughing with white phlegm. Computerized tomography and three dimension reconstruction technology…

Uncommon Presentation of Meckel's Diverticulum in Young Age.

Meckel's diverticulum is a rare detected anomaly. We present the case of a 13 months old male toddler dead shortly after he was admitted to the hospital. On internal autopsy examination abdominal dissection cream-brown fluid in abdomen was observed. In the ileum, 45 cm proximal to the ileocecal valve, 1 cm in diameter perforation area was detected, ongoing dissection revealed diverticular, pouch like structure, Meckel's diverticulum. We presented perforated Meckel's diverticulum detected at autopsy.

Perforation of Meckel's diverticulum by an intact fish bone.

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, with an overall incidence of approximately 2.2%. It is generally noted incidentally during laparotomy for management of other abdominal pathology. Complications are infrequent, developing in 4% of individuals with this abnormality, and are usually seen in childhood. Herein, we discuss the case of a 52-year-old Caucasian man presenting with a 1-day history of worsening central and right-sided abdominal pain. Initial evaluation posed a broad differential however, following conservative measures and unremar…

Urethral Diverticulum in Young Nulliparous with Unusual Presentation.

CASE: We highlight a case of chronic skenitis leading to the formation of Urethral diverticulum. A young nulliparous woman presented with dysuria, intermittent hematuria and a 3 cm cystic swelling adjacent to the left distal urethra. Aspiration of the cyst was done initially. Excisional biopsy was followed when it recurred. Urethral diverticulum was revealed when the excisional operation traced up to left distal urethral wall. The cystic swelling urethral diverticulum was completely enucleated. OUTCOME: The pathology report showed fibrous tissue with cystic spaces lined by squamous epithelium…

Urethral diverticulum calculi in a male: a case report.

A 42-year-old male presented to the urology department, complaining of frequency and dysuria. A large number of calculi were revealed on IVU and USS. On endoscopic investigation, there were 3 stones (1.5 × 1 cm) found in the bladder and 5 more (1.5 × 0.8 cm) in the diverticulum of the posterior urethra. All of the stones were successfully broken down via a transurethral approach. This paper contains a detailed description of the case.

Huge uterine-cervical diverticulum mimicking as a cyst.

Here we report an incidental huge uterine-cervical diverticulum from a total abdominal hysterectomy specimen in a perimenopausal woman who presented with acute abdominal pain. The diverticulum was mimicking with various cysts present in the lateral side of the female genital tract. Histopathological examination confirmed this to be a cervical diverticulum with communication to uterine cavity through two different openings. They can attain huge size if left ignored for long duration and present a diagnostic challenge to clinicians, radiologists, as well as pathologists because of its extreme ra…

Isolated congenital left ventricular diverticulum in an adult.

An isolated congenital left ventricular diverticulum, which is characterized by the local failure of the ventricular muscle during embryologic development, is a rare cardiac abnormality that may be found in isolated form or in the accompaniment of other cardiac abnormalities. Clinically, it has been reported to follow an asymptomatic course in the majority of cases; however, it may cause heart failure, arrhythmia, or chest pain in some patients.

Left ventricular "diverticulum" in a patient affected by galactosialidosis.

We present the case of a 35-year-old man affected by the late juvenile form of galactosialidosis. He was known for a moderate pericardial effusion which remained unchanged in the last 12 months. Last follow-up transthoracic echocardiographic examination showed a bulging of the posterior and lateral wall of the left ventricle. This finding has never been described before in galactosialidosis.

Multimodality imaging manifestations of the Meckel diverticulum in children.

Meckel diverticulum is the most common congenital abnormality of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, occurring in approximately 2% of the general population. The lifetime complication rate from a Meckel diverticulum is 0.5%-2%. The most common complications include bleeding, obstruction, inflammation and perforation. However, the clinical manifestations of a Meckel diverticulum are frequently nonspecific. As a result, complications secondary to Meckel diverticulitis can mimic a variety of more common intra-abdominal processes, such as appendicitis, inflammatory bowel disease and any other cause o…

Perforation of Meckel's diverticulum secondary to a large faecolith.

A 79-year-old woman presented with a 4 day history of central abdominal pain and vomiting. Clinical examination revealed a distended abdomen with predominantly right sided tenderness. Following an initial period of supportive treatment pending further imaging, evolving abdominal signs became evident. Based on the suspicion of a perforated hollow viscus, an emergency laparotomy was carried out. Operative findings were of a Meckel's diverticulum with evidence of pressure necrosis and perforation near its apex, which was distended due to a 6 cm faecolith. Resection and primary anastomosis was per…
