Induction of genomic instability in TK6 human lymphoblasts exposed to 137Cs gamma radiation: comparison to the induction by exposure to accelerated 56Fe particles.

The induction of genomic instability in TK6 human lymphoblasts by exposure to (137)Cs gamma radiation was investigated by measuring the frequency and characteristics of unstable clones isolated approximately 36 generations after exposure. Clones surviving irradiation and control clones were analyzed for 17 characteristics including chromosomal aberrations, growth defects, alterations in response to a second irradiation, and mutant frequencies at the thymidine kinase and Na(+)/K(+) ATPase loci. Putative unstable clones were defined as those that exhibited a significant alteration in one or more

[The modelling of the initiation of genetic damages from low doses of ionizing radiation in eukaryotic cells based on the concept of the existence of evolutionary reserve cells].

The model predicting quantitatively a dose response for genetic lesions in low dose range is presented. The model is based on the concept of programmed initiation of the genetic damage in the subpopulation of specific cells of "evolutionary reserve" (CER). It is demonstrated that complex shape of dose-response curve results from superposition of processes in different subpopulations within exposed cell population, mainly in CER. The model allows us to explain the minimum observed in the dose-response curve at doses corresponding to one (on the average) event of energy deposition per CER with s

[Late sequelae of exposure to ionizing radiation with various LET's. Effect of dose rate and fractionation on changes in the life span of rats].

In experiments with 2120 albino mongrel rats their life span was followed up after the effect of various types of radiation (for instance, gamma-neutron radiation of 0.9 MeV and gamma- and X-rays) at different exposure schedules (that is, whole-body irradiation with doses from LD0/30 to LD100/30 and fractionated at 24 and 72 hour intervals and dose--rates varying from 0.00042 Gy/min to 1.02 Gy/min). The type of radiation, the dose--rate, single and cumulative doses, the number of fractions and the interval between them were estimated with respect to their contribution to life span shortening.

The induction of chromosome aberrations in human lymphocytes by alpha-radiation.

Human blood has been irradiated with alpha-particles from an external source of curium-242. The collimated alpha-particles entered the blood with an energy of 4-9 MeV and were almost completely absorbed by the blood. After culturing for 48 hours, the dicentric yield in the lymphocytes at the first metaphase was measured as a function of dose to the blood. The yield was linear with dose up to 400 rad with a slope of 28x6 X 10(4) dicentrics/cell per rad. This is equivalent to an initial slope r.b.e. of 17x9 with respect to cobalt-60 gamma-rays. This value disagrees with the only two other publis

[Limit of measurement of middle ear impedance (author's transl)].

The air volume enclosed in the acoustic duct is considered to be one of the causes of the bad reproductibility and the great scattering of measurement results of middle ear impedance. Therefore this volume was measured with ten subjects (20 ears) and the measured values of impedance were corrected. A procedure for determining the volume between the occlusion of the external canal and the ear-drum is described. The difficulties of carrying out this procedure are pointed out. Because of the volume determination for series examinations the measurement of the value of the impedance change as a cri

Forced convection around the human head.

1. The parameters determining the forced convective heat loss from a heated body in an air stream are outlined. 2. Local forced convective heat transfer distributions around the human head and a heated vertical cylinder at various wind speeds in a climatic chamber have been found to be similar and related to the aerodynamic flow patterns. 3. From the local convective coefficient distribution, values for the overall convective coefficient h-c at various wind speeds have been evaluated. These are seen to agree closely with existing whole body coefficients determined by other methods.

Muscle as a thermodynamic machine.

Three main problems in the energetics of muscular contraction confront us at the present time:- (1) Thermodynamics. This is a labyrinthine subject in the sense that there are often several equally correct ways (that may appear different) of arriving at the same result. The recent advances in the kinetics of the reactions of muscle proteins have increased still further the need for understanding among muscle physiologists-and other biologists-of those parts of thermodynamics that concern them directly, notably those relating work and chemical change. (2) Energy balance. Over the whole cycle of

A fluorescence ratiometric chemosensor for Fe³⁺ based on TBET and its application in living cells.

Based on a through bond energy transfer (TBET) between rhodamine and naphthalimide fluorophores, a fluorescent ratiometric chemosensor L was designed and prepared for highly selective detection of Fe(3+) in aqueous solution and in living EC109 cells. These significant changes in the fluorescence color could be used for naked-eye detection. The reversibility established the potential of the probe as chemosensor for Fe(3+) detection.

Spectrophotometric study of molecular complex formation between o-chloranil and a series of methylated pyridines.

o-Chloranil has been shown to form 1:1 molecular complexes with pyridine and 2-, 3- and 4-picolines in CCl4 medium. Isosbestic points have been found but charge-transfer bands could not be detected. The formation constants of the complexes exhibit a very good linear free energy relationship from which the Hammett p parameter for the complexation reaction is found to be -3.67.

H2O2 inducing dissolved oxygen activation and electron donation of pollutants over Fe-ZnS quantum dots through surface electron-poor/rich microregion construction for water treatment.

In common advanced oxidation processes, excess reagents and energy are often added to the reaction system to maintain the continuity of the reaction. These additions result in a large waste of resources and energy, which has become a bottleneck in the development of water treatment technology. In this study, we propose a new strategy to solve this problem based on a novel dual-reaction-center (DRC) Fe-ZnS quantum dots (Fe-ZnS QDs) catalyst that forms a non-equilibrium surface with an electron-polarized distribution. Through experimental and theoretical studies, it was verified that the activat

CdSe/ZnS core shell quantum dot-based FRET binary oligonucleotide probes for detection of nucleic acids.

We report the design, synthesis, and characterization of a binary oligonucleotideprobe for selective DNA or RNA detection. The probe is based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from quantum dot (CdSe/ZnS core shell) DNA conjugates to organic dye (cyanine-5) DNA conjugates. Selective hybridization of the donor/acceptor DNA conjugates to target DNA enhances FRET and a change in fluorescence signature was observed.

Development of a real-time probe-based PCR assay for the diagnosis of Pneumocystis pneumonia.

This paper describes the development of a rapid probe-based real-time polymerase chain reaction assay (PCR) for the diagnosis of Pneumocystis pneumonia. To develop the PCR, primers and fluorescent resonance energy transfer probes were designed after sequencing products obtained using previously published primers. This gave results that were concordant with conventional cytological staining techniques, but were available within 2 h instead of greater than 24 h.

Physical constraints on thermoregulation and flight drive morphological evolution in bats.

Body size and shape fundamentally determine organismal energy requirements by modulating heat and mass exchange with the environment and the costs of locomotion, thermoregulation, and maintenance. Ecologists have long used the physical linkage between morphology and energy balance to explain why the body size and shape of many organisms vary across climatic gradients, e.g., why larger endotherms are more common in colder regions. However, few modeling exercises have aimed at investigating this link from first principles. Body size evolution in bats contrasts with the patterns observed in other

Energy recovery in individuals with knee osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Pathological gaits have been shown to limit transfer between potential (PE) and kinetic (KE) energy during walking, which can increase locomotor costs. The purpose of this study was to examine whether energy exchange would be limited in people with knee osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS: Ground reaction forces during walking were collected from 93 subjects with symptomatic knee OA (self-selected and fast speeds) and 13 healthy controls (self-selected speed) and used to calculate their center of mass (COM) movements, PE and KE relationships, and energy recovery during a stride. Fibril growth captured by electrical properties of amyloid-β and human islet amyloid polypeptide.

The aggregation of amyloid-β (Aβ) and human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP) proteins have attracted considerable attention because of their involvement in protein misfolding diseases. These proteins have mostly been investigated using atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and fluorescence microscopy to study the directional growth of fibrils both perpendicular to and along the fibril axis. Here, we demonstrate the real-time monitoring of the directional growth of fibrils in terms of activation energy of proton transfer using an impedance spectroscopy technique. The activ

Machine learning based prediction of Williamson-Casson fluid flow with Cattaneo-Christov heat transfer over a curved stretching sheet.

Accurate prediction of non-Newtonian nanofluid flow and heat transfer under melting heat conditions is essential for applications in advanced thermal management systems, polymer extrusion and coating processes, metallurgical melting operations, biomedical fluid transport, micro- and nano-scale heat exchangers, and energy systems. Motivated by these practical applications, the current work systematically examines the Williamson-Casson nanofluid flow over a slippery curved expanding surface while simultaneously incorporating the Cattaneo-Christov heat flux model. The flow is affected by melting
