Programmable microalgae: Engineering sense-decide-adapt systems for dynamic environmental performance.

Microalgal strains are engineered and benchmarked under fixed conditions, yet industrial cultures experience light, temperature, CO₂, salini … productivity under realistic trajectories. The EPE turns a design question into an experiment: does engineering expand the operating space or merely relocate the optimum? A staged roadmap, including CO₂-fluctuation trials and evolutionary stability testing, shifts engineering targets from static traits to response kinetics, recovery, heterogeneity and stabili …

Flexible bioelectronic electrodes: From engineering strategies to cross-domain biomedical applications.

Flexible electrodes have emerged as key bioelectronic interfaces for recording, modulation, and sensing in complex biological environments. Their mechanical compliance, conformal contact, and tunable electrochemical properties enable effective coupling between soft biological tissues and rigid electronic systems. However, the fabrication strategies and interface requirements governing flexible electrode performance differ substantially across biological domains, and this cross-domain design landscape has not been systematically addressed. This review comprehensively examines preparation and op

Zoomlab™-guided co-crystal engineering of nilotinib for improved dissolution.

Nilotinib (NH), a second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor for chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), exhibits poor aqueous solubility and low intestinal permeability, classifying it as a Biopharmaceutics Classification System (BCS) Class IV drug. This study aimed to enhance NH solubility and dissolution through co-crystallization, guided by computational and experimental approaches. BASF's ZoomLab™ platform was utilized for rational coformer selection using the solubility parameter difference (Δδv) method. Validation with paracetamol and posaconazole datasets established 5 MPa0.5 as the optim

Comparative evaluation of cell types for endothelialization in cardiovascular tissue engineering.

Tissue engineering represents a promising approach to overcome the limitations of current vascular grafts by promoting endothelialization. However, the successful fabrication of small-diameter (<6 mm) tissue-engineered vascular grafts (TEVGs) that maintain the desired mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and long-term patency of native vessels remains a significant challenge. The development of an ideal TEVG depends largely on achieving complete endothelial coverage using appropriate autologous cells that can mimic the functional properties of native endothelium. Several studies have highlig…

Atomically precise ligand engineering of gold nanoparticles via interphase mass transfer.

Precise surface engineering of gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) is critical for bioimaging. However, conventional methods often compromise the structural integrity of Au NCs or result in uncontrolled ligand distribution due to rapid reaction kinetics and etching side reactions. Herein, we develop an interphase-assisted ligand exchange method, which leverages mass transfer resistance between immiscible phases to precisely control the mass transfer of ligands. This approach significantly suppresses side etching while maintaining exchange kinetics, enabling high-yield, structure-preserving substitution…

Engineering cuproptosis with nanomedicine: Design, combination therapy, and translation in cancer.

Cuproptosis is a distinct form of regulated cell death triggered by copper and characterized by the aggregation of lipoylated mitochondrial proteins, destabilization of iron-sulfur cluster proteins, and proteotoxic stress. Unlike nonspecific copper toxicity, cuproptosis depends on a defined biochemical context shaped by FDX1-associated protein lipoylation, oxidative carbon metabolism, and mitochondrial substrate competence. These features may create a therapeutic vulnerability in tumors with high oxidative phosphorylation, but they also impose substantial translational challenges. Free copper

These findings show that advanced ligand engineering, beyond the metal core structure, significantly affects catalytic activity, providing a robust strategy for the design of diverse metal NC catalysts.

Phase Engineering of Atomically Precise Nanoclusters (APNCs) of Gold and Beyond.

In solid state and nanoscale materials, a phase refers to a distinct entity that can be identified in X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. For bulk metals, common phases include the face-centered cubic (fcc), hexagonal close-packed (hcp), and body-centered cubic (bcc) structures. When the dimensions of a metal are shrunk to the nanometer scale (1-100 nm), new phases that are not observed in bulk metals can be attained due to the increasing importance of surface energy as a new handle for phase control. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in phase engineering of atomically precise nan…

Interface Local-Alkalinity Engineering for Enhanced Dehydrogenation Catalysis in Neutral Media.

Hydrous hydrazine has emerged as a promising liquid-phase hydrogen storage material, but its practical application has long been constrained by sluggish reaction kinetics under neutral conditions. Drawing inspiration from interfacial engineering, we designed a NiPt-Ni(OH)2 interface that regulates the local microenvironment, enabling highly efficient hydrogen production from hydrous hydrazine under neutral conditions at room temperature. At the interfaces, strong electronic coupling is established and the adsorption of hydrazine is also altered. The resulting NiPt-Ni(OH)2 catalyst achieves a r…

Discovery of a chimeric transposase-transposon system for advanced genome engineering.

Transposases have transformed genetic engineering, yet functional systems remain scarce. In response, an unknown transposase system from Acyrthosiphon pisum was identified by metagenomic screening. Through systematic optimization, we enhanced nuclear localization, transposon architecture, and created a hyperactive transposase variant to boost efficiency. Intriguingly, the combined application of the newly discovered transposase with inverted terminal repeat sequences from a related pea aphid species, Aphis craccivora, further enhanced transposition activity, resulting in the first chimeric tra…

Molecular-Orientation Engineering Photonic Spin Textures Rotation in Organic Crystal Microcavities.

Exciton polaritons, as bosonic quasi-particles with both photon and exciton properties, provide an excellent platform for investigating novel physical effects of optical spin-orbit coupling (SOC). However, the intrinsic correlation between exciton polaritons and the spin textures evolution of the SOC lacks an intuitive explanation. Here, we demonstrate the spin textures rotation of optical SOC through the interaction of exciton and photons in organic crystal-filled microcavities with different molecular orientations. The spin textures exhibit an antisymmetric spatial distribution of left- and

Metal organic semiconducting structures for electronic band engineering and optoelectronic uses.

Semiconducting metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are hybrid materials, combining the structural flexibility of porous frameworks with the electronic activity of their building blocks, which offer immense opportunities for optoelectronic applications by tuning charge transport and band structures. In this review, we illustrate the principles of electronic band engineering in semiconducting MOFs and the ways in which the choice of metal nodes, conjugated organic linkers, the framework topology, and mixed valence systems, as well as donor-acceptor design and postsynthetic modification, can be used …
