Prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

A national survey of the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in the Islamic Republic of Iran was made on a random sample of families covered by local health centres affiliated to the medical universities. Out of 53,995 people aged 2+ years, from 12,495 families (0.1% of all families in 1999), 45,128 stool samples were analysed by formalin-ether precipitation. Intestinal parasitic infections were found in 19.3% of the study population (19.7% male, 19.1% female). Giardia lamblia (10.9%), Ascaris lumbricoides (1.5%), Entamoeba histolytica (1.0%) and Enterobius vermicularis (0.5%) were t…

A model of hepatic amoebiasis in random bred mice.

This study describes a model of hepatic amoebiasis in random bred mice (MF2). Mice were infected by introducing liver tissue from hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus), containing about 5 X 10(4) trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica, between adjacent liver lobes. Direct inoculation of xenic E. histolytica resulted in mortality within 24 h, whereas monoxenic and axenic strains failed to produce any lesions. Serial mouse liver passage resulted in increased lesion score, number of metastatic abscesses, and mortality. Metronidazole 150 mg/kg produced complete healing of the abscess. It is expected that…

Treatment of symptomatic intestinal amoebiasis with tinidazole.

Tinidazole was given in a single dose of 2g a day for 2 days to 17 adults, and in a single dose of 50mg/kg bodyweight daily for 3 days to 4 children, with symptomatic, but not severe, intestinal amoebiasis. All 21 patients showed clinical improvement but only 20 (95%) were parasitologically cured as evinced by failure to demonstrate Entamoeba histolytica in 3 stool samples collected on the 4th, 15th and 22nd day after treatment. Two subjects had mild nausea within a few hours of taking the first dose, while 8 had constipation of 3 to 5 days duration after treatment. 1 patient had nausea and co…

Amoebic Liver Abscess: Potential Application of New Diagnostic Techniques for an Old Pathogen.

Amoebic liver abscess is a severe and potentially life-threatening infection requiring prompt diagnosis and early targeted treatment. Diagnosis is challenging because conventional diagnostic methods such as light microscopy and serology are often unreliable. Molecular techniques have emerged as an additional diagnostic tool, suddenly becoming the new diagnostic reference standard. More recently, commercial multiplex PCR panels, including FilmArray, have been introduced, which permit the simultaneous detection of several enteric pathogens including Entamoeba histolytica in stool samples. We rep…

Evaluation of IL-17 and IL-35 in patients with giardiasis in Thi-Qar province, Iraq.

Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica, Cryptosporidium, and Blastocystis are some parasites primarily responsible for human infections. Giardia lamblia, also known as Giardia intestinalis or Giardia duodenalis, is a common pathogenic protozoan found in the human duodenum and jejunum that causes giardiasis. This study collected stool and blood samples from patients with diarrhea aged less than 1 month to 15 years, from September 2020 to December 2020, in Thi-Qar province. Our study aimed to reveal the diagnosis of Giardia lamblia using direct microscopy examination and detect some immunologica…

Acute diarrhea among military recruits.

There is a considerable amount of speculations concerning the presence of symptoms mainly diarrhea in various bacterial and parasitic infections. Among a youth group with acute diarrhea, many bacterial and parasitic diseases were detected. The bacterial causes were Campylobacter jejuni, Shigella sp. Entero-toxigenic, Escherichia coli, Salmonella sp. and Aeromonas hydrophila. The parasitic causes were Cryptosporidium parvum, Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia and Strongyloides stercoralis. Many accompanying symptoms were fever, headache, anorexia, vomiting, malaise, and myalgia, but cannot …

Evaluation of an immunochromatographic dip-strip test for the detection of Cryptosporidium oocysts in stool specimens.

The study presented here examined the efficacy of a commercially available qualitative immunochromatographic assay for detecting Cryptosporidium oocysts in stool samples. A total of 75 samples were tested, including 50 positive for Cryptosporidium spp. by acid-fast stain, 20 positive for other parasites ( Blastocystis hominis, Endolimax nana, Entamoeba coli, Giardia lamblia, Ascaris lumbricoides, Strongyloides stercoralis and Trichuris trichiura), and five negative samples. The observed sensitivity was 98%, while specificity was 100%; the detection threshold was near 1000 oocysts/ml. Correctly…

Parasitic infection among residents of an institution for mentally retarded persons.

Data on occurrence of intestinal parasites among resident and entering populations in a South Carolina institution for mentally retarded persons were examined. Following an eradication effort in 1973 for Trichuris trichiura, the prevalence of this parasite remained below 5 percent for the resident population, with the exception of 1974 and 1975, when small numbers of stool examinations occurred. Significantly higher proportions of the entering population, compared to the residents, harbored T. trichiura, Ascaris lumbricoides, Giardia lamblia, and Entamoeba histolytica. We concluded that annual…

Prevalence and risk factors of intestinal protozoal infections among patients in Malaysia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUNDS: Intestinal protozoan infections (IPI), including Entamoeba spp., Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium spp., are common in diarrhoea patients in Malaysia. These parasites are primarily transmitted through contaminated food and water sources and pose a significant public health concern. Entamoeba spp., causes amoebiasis, which is characterised by severe diarrhoea with bloody stools, while Giardia spp., causes giardiasis, which is characterised by watery diarrhoea, abdominal pain and flatulence. Cryptosporidium spp. causes cryptosporidiosis, which is particularly severe in immunocompr…

Hunting Trophozoites: A Rare Case of Amebiasis in an Infant.

The authors present a case of neonatal amebiasis in a 5-month-old girl who exhibited symptoms including vomiting, refusal to feed, abdominal distension, and mucoid, bloody stools. Sigmoidoscopy revealed multiple aphthous ulcers, and a colonic biopsy was submitted with clinical suspicion of eosinophilic colitis. The histologic examination of the biopsy, however, confirmed the diagnosis of amebic colitis through identification of trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica. The infant, who was likely infected by her caregiver or mother, was successfully treated with intravenous metronidazole. This rep…

[Amebic liver abscesses developing during R-CHOP chemotherapy in a patient with mantle cell lymphoma].

A 51-year-old man was diagnosed with stage IV mantle cell lymphoma based on terminal ileum biopsy and treated with the R-CHOP regimen. Abdominal CT to assess continuous fever after three courses of R-CHOP revealed three low-density areas in the liver. PCR of the fluid obtained by percutaneous drainage revealed Entamoeba histolytica positivity, although the cultures were negative. Metronidazole treatment achieved cure. The patient was not a homosexual but had an 8-month stay in Lesotho 21 years ago, leading to the possibility that E. histolytica infection at the time continued as an asymptomati…

Inferior vena cava thrombosis in a case of amoebic liver abscess: is hypercomplementemia responsible for this rare entity?

Among the liver abscesses, thrombosis of the inferior vena cava (IVC) has been reported mainly in amoebic liver abscess (ALA) caused by Entamoeba histolytica (E.H). It is an unusual complication especially in paediatric age group. Association of hypercomplementemia and IVC thrombosis has not been discussed previously. Published data suggest that E.H can activate the complement system and can cause hypercomplementemia. A very few studies suggest that complement activation and hypercomplementemia are associated with thrombus formation. We describe a paediatric case of ALA complicated by IVC thro…

A review of amoebic liver abscess for clinicians in a nonendemic setting.

Amoebic liver abscess (ALA) is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening complication of infection with the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica. E histolytica is widely distributed throughout the tropics and subtropics, causing up to 40 million infections annually. The parasite is transmitted via the fecal-oral route, and once it establishes itself in the colon, it has the propensity to invade the mucosa, leading to ulceration and colitis, and to disseminate to distant extraintestinal sites, the most common of which is the liver. The authors provide a topical review of ALA and summariz…

Intestinal parasitoses in Czechoslovak citizens working abroad.

This paper presents results of coprologic examinations of Czechoslovak citizens in connection with their working sojourns in 50 tropical and subtropical countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Among 525 persons examined, pathologic findings in stool were registered in 74 persons (14.1%) during their stay abroad and after return home. The incidence of particular infections during the period under study was as follows: non-pathogenic protozoa were found in 8.2% of cases, Entamoeba histolytica in 3.8%, Giardia intestinalis in 2.1% and helminthiases in 2.1%. Percentage of persons with positiv…

Immunologic tools in the diagnosis of amebiasis: epidemiology in the United States.

Several immunodiagnostic tests that detect antibody to Entamoeba histolytica are now available. Such tests are useful when demonstration of the etiologic agent is difficult (as in liver abscess), when routine diagnostic tests fail to disclose the organisms (as in severe intestinal disease compromised by failure of the laboratory to identify the organism or by the patient's use of interfering substances), and as epidemiologic tools for determining the prevalence of invasive disease in populations. Knowledge of the prevalence of amebiasis in the United States is incomplete because the disease is…

Induction of lung tumors and lymphomas in BALB/c mice by metronidazole.

Metronidazole, which is widely used in the treatment of "Trichomonas vaginalis", "Entamoeba histolytica" and "Giardia lamblia" infections, was administered to BALB/c mice by stomach tube in an aqueous solution at a dose rate of 2 mg/day for 100 days (total 200 mg) to test its carcinogenicity. The treatment induced a significant increase in lung tumors in male mice (p less than 0.001) and provoked the appearance of lymphomas in females (p less than 0.001). Although there is insufficient evidence to pass judgement on the potential carcinogenicity of metronidazole in man, the results of this and …
