INTRODUCTION: In the dairy industry, calves are typically fed diets rich in highly fermentable carbohydrates and low in fibrous feeds to maximize ruminal papillae and tissue development. Calves on such diets are vulnerable at developing ruminal acidosis. Prevalent in cattle, liver abscess (LA) is considered a sequela to ruminal acidosis. BACKGROUND: Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS), as a safe biophysiotherapy, can enhance bone-tendon (B-T) healing in vivo and induce osteogenic or chondrogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stromal cells in vitro. This study aimed to determine whether LIPUS can improve the efficacy of transplanted mesenchymal stromal cells on B-T healing.
HYPOTHESIS: LIPUS can induce lineage-specific differentiation of transplanted adipose-derived stromal cells (ASCs) at the B-T healing site, thus resulting in superior healing quality when compared with LIPUS or ASCs alone.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Echinodorus macrophyllus (Kunth.) Micheli (Alismataceae), known as chapéu-de-couro in Brazil, is popularly used to treat inflammatory diseases. We have previously demonstrated a significant reduction in the acute inflammation for the aqueous extract of E. macrophyllus (AEEm) and its ethanolic fraction (Fr20) and described that hydroxycinnamoyl derivatives present in SF1 (Fr20 subfraction) showed higher anti-inflammatory properties by mechanisms that include a reduction of TNF-α, IL-1β, CKCL1/KC, LTB4, and PGE2 levels in exudate.

OBJECTIVES: Cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) provokes ischaemia and reperfusion injury (IRI). Superoxide is a main mediator of IRI and is detoxified by superoxide dismutases (SODs). Extracellular SOD (SOD3) is the prevailing isoform in the cardiovascular system. Its mutation is associated with elevated risk for ischaemic heart disease as epidemiological and experimental studies suggest.
