The external fixation can be a good alternative to plate-screw treatment in the surgical treatment of bilateral distal radius fractures: A retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to compare the outcomes of two surgical treatment options, external fixator (EF) or open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), in patients with bilateral distal radius fractures (DRFs). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-one patients (11 males 10 females; mean age: 40.0±16.0 years; range, 20 to 67 years) who underwent ORIF (n=10) or EF (n=11) due to bilateral DRF at between January 2011 and December 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. The Quick Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (Q-DASH) was used to calculate functional and symptomatic evaluation. The MAYO wrist scores

Nonunion of the femoral shaft associated with limb shortening treated with a combined technique of external fixation over an intramedullary nail versus the Ilizarov method.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic nonunion of the femur remains a challenging problem even for experienced orthopedic surgeons. The main question is the choice of the optimal surgical tool. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Management of 20 patients with nonunion of the femoral diaphysis associated with anatomical shortening was retrospectively analyzed. Group A (n = 14) was treated with a hybrid technique that combined the Ilizarov external fixation and intramedullary nailing. The Ilizarov bone transport was used in group B (n = 6). Patients of both groups had aseptic post-traumatic nonunion. Mean shortenin

Operative choice for displaced proximal humeral fractures in adolescents with open visible physis: A comparative study of external fixator vs. Kirschner wire.

BACKGROUND: For adolescents with severely displaced proximal humeral fracture (PHF), surgery is a good choice yielding excellent outcomes, and Kirchner wire (KW) is a cost-effective choice for fixation. Purpose of this study is to compare the clinical outcomes of external fixator (EF) and KW for the treatment of PHF in adolescents. METHODS: Patients of PHF operated at our institute, from January 2008 to January 2016, were reviewed retrospectively. Demographic data, including sex, age at the time of surgery, operated side, and hardware choice, were collected from the hospital database. Preoper

Surgical management of delayed Gartland type III supracondylar humeral fractures in children: A retrospective comparison of radial external fixator and crossed pinning.

Radial external fixator has been proposed to treat delayed irreducible Gartland type III supracondylar humeral fracture, and this study aims to compare its effects with crossed pinning in a retrospective fashion. Delayed supracondylar humeral fracture is defined as more than 72 hours after injury, 2 or more than 2 times failed attempts of closed reduction can be deemed as irreducible fracture.Between January 2010 and January 2017, patients of Gartland type III supracondylar fractures of the humerus receiving surgery were all selected and reviewed. Overall, 39 patients fitting the inclusion cri

What Range of Motion and Functional Results Can Be Expected After Open Arthrolysis with Hinged External Fixation For Severe Posttraumatic Elbow Stiffness?

BACKGROUND: The elbow is more susceptible to loss of motion after trauma than any other joint. Open arthrolysis often is performed for posttraumatic elbow stiffness if the stiffness does not improve with nonsurgical treatment, but the midterm results of this procedure and factors that may limit recovery have not been widely studied. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We reviewed patients who had undergone open arthrolysis with hinged external fixator for severe posttraumatic elbow stiffness (ROM ≤ 60°) with a minimum of 5 years followup to (1) analyze ROM gains; (2) assess functional improvement with the Ma

Successful Management of Open, Contaminated Metacarpal Fractures in an Adult Snowy Owl ( Bubo scandiacus) With a Minimal Type II External Skeletal Fixator.

An adult, male snowy owl ( Bubo scandiacus) was found down and unable to fly in western New York State. Physical examination and radiographs revealed a subacute, open wound and fractured major and minor metacarpals of the right wing. A minimal type II external skeletal fixator (ESF) device was placed on the right major metacarpal bone and the open wound was allowed to granulate and close. After evidence of bone union, the ESF device was removed. The owl performed auto-physiotherapy throughout the process and was released with sustained flight 2 months postoperatively. It was recaptured 7 weeks

Radial nerve palsy after the use of an adjuvant hinged external fixator in a complex fracture-dislocation of the elbow: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: The combination of an elbow dislocation, a radial head fracture, and a coronoid process fracture is known as "terrible triad" injury of the elbow. This injury is one of the most challenging injuries of the musculoskeletal system and almost always causes instability of the elbow. The use of an adjuvant hinged external fixator in such injuries is still debated. CASE PRESENTATION: In this case report we present a case of radial nerve palsy after setting up an adjuvant hinged external fixator in a complex fracture-dislocation of the elbow. The patient was a 39-year-old white man. A re

External Fixator for Maintaining Reduction Before Volar Plating: A Simple Treatment Method for Association of Osteosynthesis Type C3 Distal Radius Fracture.

Volar plating for Association of Osteosynthesis type C3 distal radius fractures involves more time and more radiation exposure because it is extremely difficult to simultaneously maintain the reduction and restore the congruity of the articular surface. The authors present a technique of maintaining the acceptable reduction by using an external fixator followed by open volar plating for restoring articular congruity. A consecutive series of 96 Association of Osteosynthesis type C3 distal radius fractures treated with the technique were retrospectively reviewed between January 2004 and December

Early Conversion of External Fixation to Interlocked Nailing in Open Fractures of Both Bone Leg Assisted with Vacuum Closure (VAC) - Final Outcome.

INTRODUCTION: Management of compound grade III fractures of both bone leg includes external stabilization for long period, followed by various soft tissue coverage procedures. Primary interlocking of tibia had been also done with variable results. External fixation for long time without any bone loss often leads to infected nonunion, loss of reduction, pin tract infection and failure of fixation, primary interlocking in compound grade III fractures had shown high medullary infection rate. We managed all cases of compound grade III A/B fractures with primary external fixation, simultaneous woun

Extra-articular hip impingement due to heterotopic ossification formation at the anterior inferior iliac spine following previous pelvic external fixation.

Femoroacetabular impingements (FAIs), specifically cam type and pincer type, continue to be accepted as causes of intra-articular hip pathology and sources of hip pain. Reports of other causes of hip impingement including extra-articular causes have surfaced recently. One structure of importance is the anterior inferior iliac spine (AIIS) due to its inconsistent bony morphology and the pull of the rectus femoris muscle putting it at risk for an avulsion fracture. Under certain circumstances, open surgical excision of exostosis formation after an avulsion fracture of the AIIS has been used. The

Longitudinal bracketed epiphysis of proximal phalanx of the great toe with congenital hallux varus managed simultaneously with monorail external fixator: a case report.

Longitudinal bracketed epiphysis (delta phalanx) is a rare congenital anomaly that affects phalanges in the hand more commonly than toes. We present a rare case of congenital hallux varus with longitudinal bracketed epiphysis of proximal phalanx with bifid distal phalanx of the great toe, which was managed with monorail type of external fixator. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of its successful implementation in simultaneous treatment of longitudinal bracketed epiphysis of the proximal phalanx of the great toe and hallux varus. Apart from adding to the literature a case

Early clinical and radiographic outcomes after treatment of displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures using delta-frame external fixator construct.

Intra-articular calcaneal fractures are associated with high morbidity, persistent pain, and long-term disability. This retrospective study assesses early clinical and radiographic postoperative findings of intra-articular calcaneal fractures following treatment by ligamentotaxis using a delta frame construct with a large fragment external fixator. Minimally invasive percutaneous reduction of calcaneal fractures is an alternative treatment for Sanders type II, III, and IV fractures. Ten patients from the Detroit Medical Center were followed between January 2002 and December 2004 for follow-up

Excision of extensive midfoot pigmented villonodular synovitis with microvascular anastamosis of iliac crest bone graft using external fixation: a case report.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a relatively rare lesion in the foot and ankle, most commonly involving the ankle joint and atypically, the subtalar and midtarsal joints. It is a benign proliferative disease characterized by an increase in villous or nodular synovium in joints. Resection of the tumor is often indicated in most cases because of the potentially aggressive joint destructive nature of this lesion. This report presents a case of chronic enlarging pervasive midtarsal and metatarsal-cuneiform joint PVNS in a 28-year-old male. This patient had a midtarsal mass that enlarged
