Frequency of black pigment in livers and spleens of coal workers: correlation with pulmonary pathology and occupational information.

Histologic sections of liver and spleen from 99 retired coal workers and nine non-coal workers were obtained at autopsy and scored for black pigment. Pigment was minimal in the non-coal workers, with the exception of one person with silicosis. Moderate or heavy pigment was seen in 10.4 per cent of liver sections and 19.5 per cent of spleen sections from coal workers. The extrapulmonary pigment was not associated with any pathologic tissue response. Information on pulmonary pathology and occupational exposure to dust was available for most workers. Highly significant positive correlation was fo

Surgical mystery: where is the missing pituitary rongeur tip?

STUDY DESIGN: Case report. OBJECTIVE: We report the unusual case of a patient who was referred to our institution after she sustained an intraoperative injury to the common iliac vein during posterior lumbar discectomy at L5-S1 with a pituitary rongeur. There was only minimal bleeding with spontaneous hemostasis and no hemodynamic instability. Subsequently, the referring surgeon noted that the pituitary rongeur tip was missing. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Vascular injury during lumbar discectomy is a rare, but potentially devastating complication. Rapid diagnosis and treatment is traditional

Surgical management of ventricular septal rupture post device migration: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ventricular septal rupture (VSR) following myocardial infarction is a rare but life-threatening complication. While percutaneous closure offers a less invasive option, it remains technically challenging in posterior defects due to anatomical constraints. This case report emphasizes the limitations of device-based closure in such settings and reinforces the role of surgery as the definitive management. CASE PRESENTATION: : We report the case of a 58-year-old male who developed a posterior ventricular septal rupture following an acute inferior wall myocardial infarction. Initial mana

Neuraxial Anesthesia in a Parturient With Migrated Gluteal Biopolymer: A Case Report.

Gluteal biopolymer injections can migrate unpredictably into the lumbosacral region, creating potential barriers to neuraxial anesthesia and risking contamination of neuraxial structures. We report a case of successful epidural anesthesia in a 32-year-old primigravida with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-confirmed biopolymer migration to L5-S1. An epidural was placed at L1-L2 under ultrasound guidance during labor and subsequently used uneventfully for cesarean delivery. This case demonstrates that neuraxial anesthesia may be feasible when imaging is used to identify safe procedural sites and

Orbital Silicone Migration Following Pars Plana Vitrectomy With Perfluorocarbon Liquid Silicone Oil Exchange and Endolaser Retinopexy in a Dog.

OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively describe a case of orbital and periocular silicone oil migration in a dog following a 23-gauge pars plana vitrectomy with perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL)-silicone oil (SiO) exchange. ANIMAL STUDIED: 5-year-old spayed female mixed-breed dog with phthisis bulbi OD and retinal detachment OS of undetermined etiology. PROCEDURES: The detachment OS was treated with a 23-G pars plana vitrectomy with PFCL-SiO exchange, and the patient was followed over time. RESULTS: During surgery, which transpired uneventfully, scleral ectasia was identified in the dorsolateral quadran

Successful Removal of a Stone-covered, Proximally Migrated Pancreatic Duct Stent 14 Years After Pancreaticoduodenectomy Using Double-balloon Endoscopy.

An 88-year-old man presented with epigastric pain 14 years after a pancreaticoduodenectomy. A migrated stent was found in the pancreatic duct and encased in hard pancreatic stones. Double-balloon endoscopy was used to successfully remove the stent using a biopsy forceps. The procedure was challenging because of the stone formation and narrow pancreatic duct.

[Subcutaneous Washout Procedure (SWOP) for Treating Severe Complications of an Aesthetic Gluteal Augmentation with a Copolyamide Filler].

BACKGROUND: Apart from surgical procedures for breast and buttock augmentation, copolyamide fillers can be locally injected for an increase in volume. This method is especially popular in Asia. PATIENT: A 39-year-old female patient had received a buttock augmentation by injection of a copolyamide filler. She presented with multiple abscesses six years after the augmentation. She had developed multiple fistulas and the filler had migrated down to the thigh muscles. RESULTS: In the presented case, the patient experienced multiple complications such as abscess formation, filler migration and ch

Central Venous Catheter Migration Into Pleura Diagnosed by Transesophageal Echocardiography.

Central venous catheter (CVC) tip migration is a well reported delayed complication of these vascular access devices with left-sided internal jugular or subclavian vein placement being the primary risk factor for this complication. We report a case of left internal jugular CVC migration and its diagnosis made by the heretofore unreported use of intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography in this context. Moreover, we describe risk factors for CVC migration along with its diagnosis and management.

Acute Urinary Retention Due to Late Migration of a Retained Bullet to the Urethral Meatus.

Urethral obstruction due to retained bullets migrating into the genitourinary system has rarely been reported. The literature describes 2 main methods of retained bullet removal from the genitourinary system: (1) spontaneous expulsion during voiding and (2) manual extraction due to urethral obstruction causing acute urinary retention. We present a case in which a 21-year-old man presented with acute urinary retention 3 years after suffering a gunshot wound to the abdomen. A retained bullet eroded through the bladder wall, migrated through the bladder and urethra, and eventually became lodged i

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Meningitis from Transanal Migration of a Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt.

BACKGROUND: Bowel perforation is a rare complication of ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt placement that can result in anal protrusion of a VP shunt. Retrograde migration of bacteria through the shunt can lead to central nervous system (CNS) infections, such as meningitis, most commonly caused by Escherichia coli or other enteric pathogens. Here we present a case of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) meningitis from transanal migration of a VP shunt. CASE REPORT: A 2-month old female with a history of VP shunt placement presented to the emergency department (ED) after her mother

Infant with recurrent ventriculoperitoneal shunt migration to right scrotum.

Migration of the distal catheter of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt to the scrotum is a documented but rare event. We present a case in which a 13 month old infant with hydrocephalus had recurrent migration of the peritoneal catheter to the right scrotum associated with a developing hydrocele. The patient underwent two revision operations and the distal catheter was ultimately shortened. He later underwent bilateral inguinal hernia repairs.

Inferior subconjunctival dislocation of posterior chamber intraocular lens after blunt trauma.

Traumatic subconjunctival dislocation of the posterior chamber intraocular lens (PCIOL) is a rare and emergency condition. Here, we report an interesting variation of rare case of inferior subconjuctival dislocation of PCIOL in a 75-year-old female patient following blunt trauma to her right eye with cow's head. All the previous literature with subconjuctival dislocation of PCIOL has reported the superior dislocation of intraocular lens. Inferior subconjunctival dislocation has never been reported in previous literature.
