Partial ablation of benign osteoblastoma: a case report.

Osteoblastoma is a rare bone tumor involving spine, long bones and infrequently skull, especially with sinus localization. The orbital localization of the neoplasia may cause axial or paraxial exophthalmus, vertical diplopia, pulsatile orbital pain, soft tissue swelling with skin erythema. In addition the osteoblastoma may cause an optic nerve compression, with optic disc edema up to optic nerve atrophy. We describe a case of giant benign osteoblastoma with frontal occurrence and orbital involvement with optic nerve compression. Surgery was performed in order to obtain the partial ablation of

[Fibrous dysplasia of the skull: neurologic manifestations].

The neurological manifestations of eight patients with osseous fibrous dysplasia of skull were retrospectively studied. In this series, the frontal bone was involved in 75% of the patients, the sphenoid or temporal bones in 37.5%, and the parietal in 25%. It was observed that cranial deformities occurred in all but one case, headache was present in 87.5% of the patients, visual disturbances in 50%, proptosis in 25%, and auditive symptoms in 12.5%. Six out of the eight patients were operated on: three of the four who presented progressive visual loss had postoperative improvement. In their foll…

Long-term aesthetic and photogrammetric outcomes in non-syndromic unicoronal synostosis: comparison of fronto-orbital distraction osteogenesis and fronto-orbital advancement and remodeling.

BACKGROUND: Fronto-orbital advancement and remodeling (FOAR) is among the most common surgical approaches for unicoronal craniosynostosis (UCS), although some data demonstrate failure to achieve long-term aesthetic normalcy, leading some to seek alternative treatment paradigms such as fronto-orbital distraction osteogenesis (FODO). This study compares long-term aesthetic outcomes of patients with UCS treated with FOAR and FODO. METHODS: Twenty patients (four males) with non-syndromic UCS presenting to our institution and undergoing distraction were compared to a matched cohort of 20 patients

Immediate Resection and Reconstruction of Encephalocele in the Craniofacial Region.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital meningoencephalocele is a herniation of brain and meninges through a skull base defect. It may result not only in neural defects, sensorimotor deficits, neurological morbidities, visual impairment, impaired nasal function, and a potential risk of intracranial infection. Goals of surgery include removal or repositioning of nonfunctional cerebral tissue, closure of the dura, and reconstruction of skeletal and cutaneous structures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors present the case of a 4-months-old infant who was found to have a frontoethmoidal encephalomeningocele tha

Anterior Synostotic Plagiocephaly: A Quantitative Analysis of Craniofacial Features Using Computed Tomography.

The premature fusion of one coronal suture causes anterior synostotic plagiocephaly (ASP), which results in overt craniofacial dysmorphology that could be challenging to correct. This study aimed to document and compare the morphometry of the anterior cranial fossa (ACF), orbit, and ear on the ipsilateral (synostotic) and contralateral (nonsynostotic) sides in a select cohort of South African patients with ASP, using computed tomography (CT) scans. The dimensions of the ACF, orbit and the position of the ear on the ipsilateral and contralateral sides were measured using a set of anatomical lan

[Evaluation of the frontal recess cells with image-guided system].

Objective:To investigate the value of image-guided system in identifying the frontal recess cells.Method:We collected 30 cases that underwent image-guided frontal sinus surgery from November 2014 to December 2015. These frontal recess cells were devided into 2 groups based upon their locations in the frontal sinus ostium. Group A consists of the agger nasi cells, type Ⅰfrontal cells, type Ⅱ frontal cells and suprabullar cells; group B consist of type Ⅲ frontal cells, type Ⅳ frontal cells, frontal bullar cells, interfrontal sinus septal cells and supraorbital ethmoid cells. Visual analogue scal

Monobloc Le Fort III Distraction Osteogenesis for Correction of Severe Fronto-orbital and Midface Hypoplasia in Pediatric Crouzon Syndrome.

In severe syndromic craniosynostosis, distraction osteogenesis (DO) provides superior segmental advancement and allows progressive clinical monitoring to ensure that adequate skeletal expansion is achieved. We report two cases of Crouzon syndrome involving a 3-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl, who were both treated with monobloc Le Fort III DO using a combination of external and internal distraction devices (Synthes, Oberdorf, Switzerland) to treat severe orbital proptosis and obstructed nasopharyngeal airway secondary to severe hypoplastic craniofacial skeletal components. Their skeletal se

A new operative open-wings technique to correct the frontoforehead unit in metopic synostosis.

The technology adoption and creation of a multidisciplinary team have helped to overcome the complexity associated. Craniofacial surgery has thus emerged from the valuable contributions of neurosurgery, maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, eyes, nose, and throat as well as head and neck surgery. A patient with trigonocephaly may present a prominent "keel" forehead, accompanied by recession of the lateral orbit rims, hypotelorism, and constriction of the anterior frontal fossa when the metopic suture fuses before 6 months of age. In a period between 2007 and 2011, in the Salesi Children's Ho

[Echographic diagnosis in injuries of the paranasal sinuses].

A-scan and B-scan sonography was performed in 86 patients with fractures in the paranasal region (73 blow-out, 8 ethmoidal, 5 frontal sinus fractures). In all of them echography provided a correct diagnosis by delineating fracture lines and bone fragment dislocation. Additionally, sonography detected a haematosinus in 17, and a subperiosteal haematoma in 6 patients, respectively. Although echography can never replace radiologic diagnostics, it should be performed in the primary evaluation and in the follow-up of all patients with paranasal traumatology because of its high accuracy.
