The impact of additives found in industrial formulations of TCE on the wettability of sandstone.

The wettability of aquifer rocks is a key physical parameter which exerts an important control on the transport, residual trapping, distribution and eventual fate of chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents (CHSs) released into the subsurface. Typically chlorinated solvents are assumed to be non-wetting in water saturated rocks and unconsolidated sediments. However industrially formulated solvent products are often combined with basic additives such as alkylamines to improve their performance; and the mineral surfaces of aquifer rocks and sediments usually possess a range of acid and hydrogen-bonding

[Characterization of dinosaur fossils and their surrounding rocks by atomic emission spectrometry and X-ray powder diffractometry].

More dinosaur fossils have been found in the Laochangqing valley, Lufeng county than anywhere else in the world, and the dinosaur fossils found here cover the longest time span (including the early and middle Jurassic ages). This excavation offers an ideal experimental base for prehistoric biology studies. This paper presents an elementary analysis of the components and structure of the dinosaur fossils in three different geologic-layers and their surrounding rocks in the above mentioned area. Atomic emission spectrum shows that the fossils are rich in the contents of calcium (>5%) and phospho

Determination of metal partitioning in porewater extracted from the Seine River Estuary sediment (France).

Total dissolved trace and major metals and their partitioning in porewater sediment have been investigated at two sites in the Seine River estuary (France). For this purpose, solid phase extraction (SPE) has been employed using specific chelating resins for the separation and preconcentration of organic and inorganic forms of studied metals under controlled (N2) inert atmosphere. In fact, the study is focused on the development of a method for sample collection and handling under inert atmosphere in order to avoid some potential artefacts of the extracted porewater, to preserve the samples fro

Determination of fifteen priority phenolic compounds in environmental samples from Andalusia (Spain) by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.

This work describes the optimisation of a method to determinate fifteen phenolic compounds in waters, sediments and biota (green marine algae) by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS) with atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation (APCI) in the negative mode. The LC separations of the studied compounds and their MS parameters were optimised in order to improve selectivity and sensitivity. Separation was carried out with a C(18) column using methanol and 0.005% acid acetic as mobile phase in gradient mode. The molecular ion was selected for the quantitation in selective ion

Methylmercury in rivers draining cultivated watersheds.

Total mercury (THg) concentrations in streams draining cultivated watersheds in Minnesota, USA are strongly correlated with total suspended sediment (TSS) concentrations, varying widely in response to precipitation-driven inputs of soil-derived suspended sediments. Methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in these waterways have not been studied, and little is known about mercury uptake mechanisms in resident fish populations. To begin to identify factors influencing MeHg concentrations and loadings in these streams, we measured THg and MeHg concentrations in unfiltered whole water samples from the

Mercury and methylmercury in the Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic Sea).

The distribution, sources and fate of mercury (Hg) in the water column of the Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic Sea), affected by the Hg polluted river Soca/Isonzo for centuries draining the cinnabar-rich deposits of the Idrija mining district (NW Slovenia), were studied in terms of total and dissolved Hg, reactive Hg, total and dissolved methylmercury (MeHg), mesozooplankton Hg and MeHg, and sedimentation rates of particulate Hg. Higher total Hg concentrations in the surface layer were restricted to the area of the Gulf in front of the river plume expanding in a westerly direction. Higher co

Geochemical effects on metals following permanganate oxidation of DNAPLs.

The application of in situ chemical oxidation for dense, nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) remediation requires delivery of substantial levels of oxidant chemicals into the subsurface to degrade target DNAPLs and to satisfy natural oxidant demand. This practice can raise questions regarding changes in subsurface conditions, yet information regarding potential effects, especially at the field scale, has been lacking. This paper describes an evaluation of the effects on metals associated with in situ chemical oxidation using potassium permanganate at Launch Complex 34 (LC34), Cape Canaveral Air St

Importance of uncertainty and variability to predicted risks from trophic transfer of PCBs in dredged sediments.

Biomagnification of organochlorine and other persistent organic contaminants by higher trophic level organisms represents one of the most significant sources of uncertainty and variability in evaluating potential risks associated with disposal of dredged materials. While it is important to distinguish between population variability (e.g., true population heterogeneity in fish weight, and lipid content) and uncertainty (e.g., measurement error), they can be operationally difficult to define separately in probabilistic estimates of human health and ecological risk. We propose a disaggregation of

Factors controlling the bioaccumulation of mercury and methylmercury by the estuarine amphipod Leptocheirus plumulosus.

The bioaccumulation of inorganic mercury (HgI) and monomethylmercury (MMHg) by benthic organisms and subsequent trophic transfer couples the benthic and pelagic realms of aquatic systems and provides a mechanism for transfer of sedimentary contaminants to aquatic food chains. Experiments were performed to investigate the bioavailability and bioaccumulation of particle-associated HgI and MMHg by the estuarine amphipod Leptocheirus plumulosus to further understand the controls on bioaccumulation by benthic organisms. HgI and MMHg are particle reactive and have a strong affinity for organic matte

Extraction and separation of cationic surfactants from river sediments: application to a spectrophotometric determination of cationic surfactant in an aquatic environment using membrane filters.

The quantitative extraction of cationic surfactant (CS+) in river sediments was studied. Further, the developed method was applied to the spectrophotometric determination of CS+ in urban river sediment samples by solid-phase extraction with membranes. A mixture of methanol and hydrochloric acid was proposed as an eluent. Dried sediment was digested in the eluent under ultrasonic irradiation. After elution, the eluent was evaporated to almost dryness. The residue was dissolved in a small volume of methanol and diluted to a certain volume with water. The pH of the solution was adjusted to 4-5 to

Transcriptomic analysis of zebrafish (Danio rerio) liver exposed to sediments from the Loa River.

Metal(loid) contamination in aquatic ecosystems, particularly the Loa River in Chile, poses significant environmental and health challenges. This study investigated the molecular impacts of such contamination by exposing zebrafish (Danio rerio) to sediments from pre-impact and severely impacted zones of the Loa River, utilizing transcriptomic analysis of zebrafish liver. Sediment characterization confirmed arsenic as the main driver of contamination, with As concentrations significantly higher at La Finca. Our findings reveal a clear and distinct cascade of molecular responses in fish exposed

Dissemination of antimicrobial resistance in surface waters: surveillance of enterococci and coliform bacteria in Slovakia.

Antimicrobial-resistant faecal bacteria represent an increasing environmental concern in surface waters impacted by anthropogenic activities. Surveillance of enterococci and coliform bacteria, particularly Escherichia coli, is widely used to assess the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance in aquatic environments. These ecosystems may act as reservoirs of resistance determinants, where subinhibitory antibiotic concentrations promote their persistence and horizontal transfer, posing a potential public health risk. This study aimed to survey antibiotic‑resistant coliform bacteria and enteroco

Unravelling methylmercury formation in high-altitude Tibetan thermokarst lakes.

Climate warming accelerates permafrost degradation, which not only increases greenhouse gas emission but also the conversion of permafrost-stored mercury (Hg) to the neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) - a global pollutant to humans and ecosystems. While several studies have examined Hg transformation processes in high-latitude Arctic permafrost, little is known regarding the formation and distribution of MeHg in high-altitude permafrost, particularly the thermokarst lakes on the Tibetan Plateau (so-called Earth's third pole). We conducted field investigations and show an elevated MeHg concentrati

Seasonal variations in heavy metals concentration in water and sediment and associated ecological and human health risk assessment in Chembarambakkam lake, Tamil Nadu, India.

Climate-induced hydrological variability and enhanced anthropogenic pressures are increasingly imposed on fresh water ecosystems, and the transport and bio availability of heavy metals are strongly affected via these pressures. It is therefore essential to know the changes of the metal concentrations seasonally so that this ecosystem integrity can be maintained and the risk to anthropological health can be reduced. The current study aimed to evaluate the seasonal variations of major heavy metals As, Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Fe, and Al in the water and sediments of Chembarambakkam Lake, which is

Unveiling microplastic pollution: Evaluating the role of Sinotaia quadrata (Caenogastropoda, Viviparidae) as a monitoring tool in freshwater ecosystems.

Freshwater species play a key role in monitoring microplastics (MPs) pollution, providing insights into its distribution, accumulation, and potential ecological and human health risks in aquatic ecosystems. This study evaluates the invasive snail Sinotaia quadrata as a potential tool for monitoring MPs pollution in freshwater ecosystems heavily impacted by human activities. Specifically, we examined whether the characteristics of MPs (i.e., shape, color, and chemical composition) found in water and sediment were reflected in those accumulated by S. quadrata, and whether MPs accumulation varied

Multivariate analysis on spatial distribution of chemical elements in river sediment assessed by the total reflection X-ray fluorescence technique.

This study applies total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) to assess multielement contamination in river sediments from a small urban basin in western Paraná, Brazil. Eleven elements (Al, K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb) were quantified using an internal standard, and the concentration data were evaluated using Spearman correlation, principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis. Cu, Zn and especially Pb reached concentrations up to 703, 349 and 344 mg kg-1, with several values exceeding Brazilian guideline thresholds for soils impacted by anthropogenic activities.

Environmental dynamic evaluation of fluoroquinolones in water-sediment microcosms and the effect in total coliforms development.

The contamination of aquatic environments by anthropogenic activities leads to the release of emerging contaminants, including residual antibiotics, whose fate and transformation pathways remain poorly understood. This study evaluated the environmental dynamics of fluoroquinolone antibiotics in water-sediment microcosms and assessed how exposure influenced the abundance of total coliforms and Escherichia coli populations. Anaerobic microcosms were prepared using water and sediment collected from a preserved station in the Billings Reservoir (Brazil) and spiked with ciprofloxacin (CIPRO) at 10,

Increased temperature enhances microbial-mediated lignin decomposition in river sediment.

BACKGROUND: Lignin, as the most abundant recalcitrant organic carbon in terrestrial ecosystems, plays a crucial role in the Earth's carbon cycle. After lignin entering aquatic environments, portion of it tends to accumulate in sediments, forming a stable carbon relatively reservoir. However, the increasing temperature caused by human activities may impact microbial-mediated lignin decomposition, thereby affecting sedimentary carbon reservoirs. Therefore, revealing how temperature affects microbial-mediated lignin decomposition in river sediment, a topic that remains elusive, is essential for c
