Amelanotic/Hypomelanotic melanoma--is dermatoscopy useful for diagnosis?

BACKGROUND: Amelanotic/hypomelanotic melanoma often leads to delayed clinical diagnosis because its clinical appearance can mimic other hypopigmented skin conditions. Dermatoscopy (dermoscopy, epiluminescence microscopy) is thought to be a helpful diagnostic tool in pigmented skin lesions, but it can be used also in non-pigmented skin tumors due to the recognition of vascular structures not visible to the naked eye. OBJECTIVE: 7 amelanotic/hypomelanotic melanomas in 6 patients were analyzed in order to define their dermatoscopic findings using standard pattern analysis. METHODS: Clinical and

Surface-based hemangiomas of bone. A review of 11 cases.

The surface-based hemangioma of bone is an uncommon cause of periosteal- or cortical-based lesions. The files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology were searched for lesions diagnosed as cortical hemangioma or periosteal hemangioma received between the years 1950 and 1990; 11 cases with follow-up results were identified. The 11 patients ranged in age from 11 to 31 years of age at the time of initial symptoms (average, 21 years; mean, 23 years). Sixty percent of the patients were male and 40% were female. Skeletal sites of involvement included the tibia (45%), the fibula (36%), the femur (

[Clinical features of chronic granulomatous disease].

OBJECTIVE: Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a rare primary immunodeficiency of phagocytic oxidative bursts leading to recurrent severe bacterial and fungal infections as well as granuloma formation. There were few reports on the clinical characteristics of this disease in China. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical features of 48 Chinese cases with CGD which were confirmed by clinical features, dihydrorhodamine (DHR) assay and gene mutation analysis. METHOD: The study cohort was the population of CGD patients diagnosed in Children's Hospital of Fudan University from Ja

Retroperitoneal lobular capillary hemangioma with synchronous ipsilateral renal cell carcinoma.

Lobular capillary hemangiomas (LCH) are acquired benign vascular tumors of skin and mucosal spaces of head and neck. Very few cases of LCH have been reported in the abdomen, predominantly occurring as mucosal polyps in the bowel. We present CT imaging features of solitary retroperitoneal LCH in a patient with synchronous ipsilateral renal cell carcinoma and review the available literature and imaging features in abdominal and extra-abdominal LCH. To our knowledge, there is no other case of retroperitoneal LCH available in the English literature.

Nodules arising within port-wine stains: a clinicopathologic study of 31 cases.

Nodules are seen in approximately 10%-30% patients within port-wine stains (PWS) and usually regarded as vascular "tumor." However, nodules arising within PWS have not been systematically examined and the precise pathologic characteristics of them are unknown. The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of blood vessels of nodules in 31 cases. A total of 31 biopsy specimens (excision) were obtained from the representative areas of lesion of each patient with nodules. Clinical features of all patients were recorded. Hematoxylin and eosin staining,

Inflammatory lobular hemangioma (T-cell-rich angiomatoid polypoid pseudolymphoma)-Assessment of FOS/FOSB and lymphoid markers and comparison with epithelioid hemangioma.

BACKGROUND: T-cell-rich angiomatoid polypoid pseudolymphoma (TRAPP) and inflammatory lobular hemangioma (ILH) encompass a spectrum of cutaneous vascular lesions in which a prominent lymphoplasmacytic component may impart a pattern highly reminiscent of low-grade cutaneous lymphoma (pseudolymphoma). Epithelioid hemangioma, including its most common variant angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (ALHE), is a distinct entity associated with FOS and/or FOSB expression detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC). These entities can show significant morphological overlap. METHODS: We performed IHC

Prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in oral mucosal lesions in Iran: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the development of oral lesions is controversial. There has been no comprehensive study about HPV prevalence in Iran. This systematic review and meta-analysis were aimed at finding HPV prevalence of oral lesions and normal oral mucosa in Iran. International (PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus) and national (Iranmedex, Irandoc, and SID) databases were searched systematically until October 2020. Studies that examined the prevalence of HPV in oral lesions by polymerase chain reaction method were included. The heterogeneity of articles was assessed with th

[Bacillary angiomatosis].

Bacillary angiomatosis is a bacterial disease which affects mainly immunosuppressed patients. It may compromise any tissue, especially the skin, presenting papules, nodules or angiomatous tumors. We studied three young men with AIDS, all of them with 1-2 papules, nodules or subcutaneous tumors suggesting telangiectatic granuloma, sarcoma and lipoma. Microscopically, they were misdiagnosed as telangiectatic granuloma, Kaposi's sarcoma and "angioma with secondary inflammation". After reviewing the histopathology, we saw them to be composed by vessels with prominent endothelium and stroma rich in

Lobular capillary hemangiomas: An epidemiologic report, with emphasis on cutaneous lesions.

BACKGROUND: Lobular capillary hemangiomas (pyogenic granulomas) occur on both mucosal and cutaneous surfaces. There are conflicting data regarding the increased prevalence of lobular capillary hemangiomas in female versus male subjects. Some studies have noted a female predominance of lobular capillary hemangiomas, but other studies do not reveal such a disparity. Because of an increased prevalence during pregnancy, oral tumors are also known as "granuloma gravidarum" or "pregnancy tumors." A hormonal influence for these mucosal lesions has been postulated. There are, however, no studies that

Multi-Etiological Nature of Tuberculosis-Like Lesions in Condemned Pigs at the Slaughterhouse.

Tuberculosis-like lesions (TBL) in pigs have been associated with microorganisms other than mycobacteria. In this work a histopathological and microbiological evaluation of TBL in pigs is shown. A total of 352 samples belonging to 171 pigs totally condemned at slaughterhouse due to generalized TBL were sampled and selected for analysis. Pyogranulomatous (56.2%) and granulomatous lesions (20.2%) were observed in all analysed organs. Most of the granulomas observed in both lymph nodes and lungs belonged to more advanced stages of development (stages III and IV) whereas in the liver and the splee

Repair of exposed hydroxyapatite orbital implants by subconjunctival tissue flaps.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to determine the feasibility of the use of subconjunctival tissue flaps to repair exposed hydroxyapatite (HA) orbital implants. METHODS: One hundred thirty-eight consecutive patients underwent repair of exposed HA orbital implants via a procedure that involved the creation of subconjunctival tissue flaps. After the superior and inferior subconjunctival flaps were created, they were sutured together in the tension-free state to seal the exposure. During follow-up examinations, complications were assessed. RESULTS: Twelve patients were lost after the 3-mon

Brain abscess mimicking a brain tumor only realized during surgery: A case report in a resource strained environment.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of brain tumors increased in sub-Saharan Africa since the advent of computed tomography (CT)-scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in these regions, enabling easy diagnosis. However, some histological types of brain tumors can be confusing, especially on CT-scan, simulating other pathologies such as inflammatory granulomas or pyogenic abscesses. MRI, in this instance, with its diffusion-weighted imaging, susceptibility weighted imaging, or perfusion imaging, is important to help with accurate diagnosis. The down side of these imaging facilities, however, is that less

Inhibition of Angiofibromas in a Tuberous Sclerosis Patient Using Topical Timolol 0.5% Gel.

Angiofibromas are the most recognized cutaneous manifestations of tuberous sclerosis complex. Angiofibromas can be associated with disfigurement, bleeding, pruritus, and erythema and may lead to significant psychosocial consequences for affected patients. Histopathologically, angiofibromas consist of a mixture of vascular and interstitial cells. Traditional treatment options include cryotherapy, electrocoagulation, radiofrequency ablation, dermabrasion, laser treatment, and topical agents such as podophyllotoxin. However, complications such as pain, postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, scarring

A Retrospective Review of Glueless, Sutureless Pterygium Excision Using Biovance Triple-Layer Decellularized Amniotic Basement Membrane Tissue.

INTRODUCTION: A retrospective analysis was performed to determine if a glueless, sutureless surgical technique utilizing a triple-layer dehydrated, decellularized amniotic basement membrane tissue, combined with short exposure to mitomycin‑C (MMC), can reduce recurrence and complications after pterygium surgery. Surgical excision remains the mainstay of treatment when symptoms such as vision impairment, foreign body sensation, or cosmetic concerns arise. Wide variation in recurrence rates reflects differences in patient populations, follow-up duration, surgical technique nuances, and definitio

Reconstruction and Regeneration of Composite Fingertip Injuries Using Acellular Bladder Matrix.

PURPOSE: Traumatic fingertip amputations are one of the most encountered injuries in the emergency department requiring evaluation by a hand surgeon. Current management strategies vary widely. We describe the use of acellular urinary bladder matrix (UBM) in complex distal fingertip injuries involving bone, soft tissue, and nailbed. METHODS: A prospective cohort of 47 patients with proximal fingertip amputations (36 Allen zone III and 15 Allen zone IV) underwent UBM application with resultant fingertip regeneration. Patients received the first application in the operating room. Subsequent appl
