AI Denoising Improves Image Quality and Radiological Workflows in Pediatric Ultra-Low-Dose Thorax Computed Tomography Scans.

(1) This study evaluates the impact of an AI denoising algorithm on image quality, diagnostic accuracy, and radiological workflows in pediatric chest ultra-low-dose CT (ULDCT). (2) Methods: 100 consecutive pediatric thorax ULDCT were included and reconstructed using weighted filtered back projection (wFBP), iterative reconstruction (ADMIRE 2), and AI denoising (PixelShine). Place-consistent noise measurements were used to compare objective image quality. Eight blinded readers independently rated the subjective image quality on a Likert scale (1 = worst to 5 = best). Each reader wrote a semiqua

Low-dose abdominopelvic computed tomography in patients with lymphoma: An image quality and radiation dose reduction study.

This study aimed to evaluate image quality, the detection rate of enlarged lymph nodes, and radiation dose exposure of ultralow-dose and low-dose abdominopelvic computed tomography (CT) in patients with lymphoma. Patients with lymphoma who underwent abdominopelvic CT using dual-source scanner were retrospectively recruited from a single center. CT images were obtained at 90 kVp dual-source mode reformatted in three data sets using the advanced modelled iterative reconstruction algorithm: 100% (standard-dose CT), 66.7% (low-dose CT), and 33.3% (ultralow-dose CT). Two radiologists analyzed subje

Reconstruction Algorithm-Based CT Imaging for the Diagnosis of Hepatic Ascites.

The study was aimed at exploring the diagnostic value of artificial intelligence reconstruction algorithm combined with CT image parameters on hepatic ascites, expected to provide a reference for the etiological evaluation of clinical abdominal effusion. Specifically, the adaptive iterative hard threshold (AIHT) algorithm for CT image reconstruction was proposed. Then, 100 patients with peritoneal effusion were selected as the research subjects. After 8 cases were excluded, the remaining was divided into 50 cases of the S1 group (hepatic ascites) and 42 cases of the D0 group (cancerous periton

Computed Tomography Angiography Assessment of Acute Aortic Syndromes: Classification, Differentiating Imaging Features, and Imaging Interpretation Pitfalls.

An acute aortic syndrome (AAS) is an important life-threatening condition that requires early detection and management. Acute intramural hematoma (IMH), aortic dissection (AD) and penetrating atherosclerotic ulcer (PAU) are included in AAS. ADs can be classified using the well-known Stanford or DeBakey classification systems. However, these classification systems omit description of arch dissections, anatomic variants, and morphologic features that impact outcome. The Society for Vascular Surgery and Society of Thoracic Surgeons (SVS-STS) have recently introduced a classification system that c

Bioinformatics analysis of whole slide images reveals significant neighborhood preferences of tumor cells in Hodgkin lymphoma.

In pathology, tissue images are evaluated using a light microscope, relying on the expertise and experience of pathologists. There is a great need for computational methods to quantify and standardize histological observations. Computational quantification methods become more and more essential to evaluate tissue images. In particular, the distribution of tumor cells and their microenvironment are of special interest. Here, we systematically investigated tumor cell properties and their spatial neighborhood relations by a new application of statistical analysis to whole slide images of Hodgkin

Ankle Fracture Detection Utilizing a Convolutional Neural Network Ensemble Implemented with a Small Sample, De Novo Training, and Multiview Incorporation.

To determine whether we could train convolutional neural network (CNN) models de novo with a small dataset, a total of 596 normal and abnormal ankle cases were collected and processed. Single- and multiview models were created to determine the effect of multiple views. Data augmentation was performed during training. The Inception V3, Resnet, and Xception convolutional neural networks were constructed utilizing the Python programming language with Tensorflow as the framework. Training was performed using single radiographic views. Measured output metrics were accuracy, positive predictive valu

A novel multi-atlas strategy with dense deformation field reconstruction for abdominal and thoracic multi-organ segmentation from computed tomography.

Anatomical evaluation of multiple abdominal and thoracic organs is generally performed with computed tomography images. Owing to the large field-of-view of these images, automatic segmentation strategies are typically required, facilitating the clinical evaluation. Multi-atlas segmentation (MAS) strategies have been widely used with this process, requiring multiple alignments between the target image and the set of known datasets, and subsequently fusing the alignment results to obtain the final segmentation. Nonetheless, current MAS strategies apply a global alignment of a deformable object,

Ultralow-dose computed tomography imaging for surgery of midfacial and orbital fractures using ASIR and MBIR.

The influence of dose reductions on diagnostic quality using a series of high-resolution ultralow-dose computed tomography (CT) scans for computer-assisted planning and surgery including the most recent iterative reconstruction algorithms was evaluated and compared with the fracture detectability of a standard cranial emergency protocol. A human cadaver head including the mandible was artificially prepared with midfacial and orbital fractures and scanned using a 64-multislice CT scanner. The CT dose index volume (CTDIvol) and effective doses were calculated using application software. Noise wa

Postoperative evaluation of surgery for craniosynostosis based on image registration techniques.

Craniosynostosis consists of a premature fusion of the sutures in an infant skull, which restricts the skull and brain growth. During the last decades there has been a rapid increase of fundamentally diverse surgical treatment methods. At present, the surgical outcome has been assessed using global variables such as cephalic index, head circumerence and intracranial volume. However, the variables have failed in describing the local deformations and morphological changes, which are proposed to more likely induce neurological disorders.

X-ray phase contrast imaging of the bone-cartilage interface.

Synovial joints articulate in a lubricating environment, the system providing for smooth articulation. The articular cartilage overlying the bone consists of a network of collagen fibres. This network is essential to cartilage integrity, suffering damage in degenerative joint disease such as osteoarthritis. At Surrey and also in work conducted by this group at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) synchrotron site we have been applying a number of techniques to study the bone-cartilage interface and of changes occurring in this with disease. One of the techniques attracting particular interest is

Novel quantitative techniques for assessing regional and global function and structure based on modern imaging modalities: implications for normal variation, aging and diseased states.

In this review, we describe the current approaches used for quantitative assessment of regional and global function with positron emission tomography (PET) imaging (combined with structural imaging modalities) with emphasis on both research and clinical applications of this powerful approach. We particularly refer to the impact of such measurements in assessing physiological processes such as aging and measuring response to treatment in serious disorders such as cancer. Although a multitude of methods has been described in literature, the optimal approaches that are both accurate and practical

Effect of foot shape on the three-dimensional position of foot bones.

To eliminate some of the ambiguity in describing foot shape, we developed three-dimensional (3D), objective measures of foot type based on computerized tomography (CT) scans. Feet were classified via clinical examination as pes cavus (high arch), neutrally aligned (normal arch), asymptomatic pes planus (flat arch with no pain), or symptomatic pes planus (flat arch with pain). We enrolled 10 subjects of each foot type; if both feet were of the same foot type, then each foot was scanned (n=65 total). Partial weightbearing (20% body weight) CT scans were performed. We generated embedded coordinat

Automatic detection of anatomical landmarks in uterine cervix images.

The work focuses on a unique medical repository of digital cervicographic images ("Cervigrams") collected by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in longitudinal multiyear studies. NCI, together with the National Library of Medicine (NLM), is developing a unique web-accessible database of the digitized cervix images to study the evolution of lesions related to cervical cancer. Tools are needed for automated analysis of the cervigram content to support cancer research. We present a multistage scheme for segmenting and labeling regions of anatomical interest within the cervigrams. In particular,

Advanced imaging findings and computer-assisted surgery of suspected synovial chondromatosis in the temporomandibular joint.

Synovial chondromatosis of the joint occurs mainly in teenagers and young adults. Only 3% of these neoplasms are located in the head and neck region. Synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint is therefore a very rare disorder. Therefore, developing a working, histological confirmation is required for differential diagnosis. In this case series, the outcome of histological investigation and imaging techniques are compared. Based on clinical symptoms, five cases of suspected synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint are presented. In each of the subjects, the diagnosis

The clinical value of electroencephalogram/magnetic resonance imaging co-registration and three-dimensional reconstruction in the surgical treatment of epileptogenic lesions.

With the rapid developments in image processing, new clinical applications of manipulation and three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction of neuro-imaging are evolving. Combination with other non-invasive techniques aimed at localising electric sources in the brain is of particular interest. These techniques rely on the recording of brain electrical activity and/or the associated magnetic fields from multiple areas on the scalp. Data obtained from an electroencephalogram (EEG) or from magnetoencephalography (MEG) can be fused in 3-D arrangement with anatomical [magnetic resonance imaging/computeri

The skull base in plagiocephaly.

Between 1975 and 1992, 426 children with craniofacial malformations were treated in the Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Hôpital des Enfants de la Timone in Marseille. Plagiocephaly was present in 71 (16.6%). The authors present a reproducible analysis of the skull base in plagiocephaly based on these 71 patients. A control group of Mediterranean children (n = 20) was used for comparison. Clinical anthropometric patterns were analyzed in all cases. Comparison with the control group showed a difference only in the nasion-lambda distance. Data obtained from clinical anthropometry were

Transfer Learning for Improving Neuroimaging-Based Diagnostic Classification.

UNLABELLED: Overfitting, an issue that constrains the validity and generalizability of machine learning in neuroimaging-based diagnostic-classification, is in part due to small sample sizes in relation to what is required for generalization. Even with data aggregation (such as in Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange or ABIDE), the relatively smaller sample sizes are a result of the fact that it is difficult/expensive to acquire data from clinical populations. With healthy controls, we have comparatively larger samples available. Therefore, we propose to address overfitting by using larger health

From Symptomatic to Pre-Symptomatic: Adaptive Knowledge Distillation for Early Alzheimer's Detection Using Functional MRI.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) progresses from asymptomatic changes to clinical symptoms, underscoring the critical need for early detection to facilitate timely treatment. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) offers non-invasive biomarkers for detection, but current methods fail to reliably identify pre-symptomatic individuals due to two key challenges: (1) Subtle, anatomically distinct fMRI patterns in pre-symptomatic cases that resemble healthy controls more than symptomatic patients, and (2) Severe class imbalance in real-world data, where healthy controls vastly outnumber pre-symptomati
