Preliminary observations of DSM-III-R axis I comorbidity in men with paraphilias and paraphilia-related disorders.

BACKGROUND: We describe a comorbidity study of DSM-III-R-defined Axis I diagnoses comparing male outpatient paraphiliacs to men with nonparaphilic forms of sexual impulsivity designated as paraphilia-related disorders. METHOD: Data were prospectively collected from 60 consecutively evaluated outpatient males, aged 21-53 years, seeking treatment for the principal disorders of paraphilias (N = 34) and/or paraphilia-related disorders (N = 26). Subjects completed a semistructured psychiatric Intake Questionnaire and Sexual Inventory. The lifetime prevalence of DSM-III-R Axis I diagnoses, includin

Neural and behavioral correlates of sexual stimuli anticipation point to addiction-like mechanisms in compulsive sexual behavior disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) is characterized by persistent patterns of failure to control sexual impulses resulting in repetitive sexual behavior, pursued despite adverse consequences. Despite previous indications of addiction-like mechanisms and the recent impulse-control disorder classification in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), the neurobiological processes underlying CSBD are unknown. METHODS: We designed and applied a behavioral paradigm aimed at disentangling processes related to anticipation and viewing of erotic stimuli. In 22

Substance use disorders and violent behaviour in patients with severe mental disorders: A prospective, multicentre study.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between alcohol and substance use and the risk of violence exhibited by patients with mental disorders is under-researched. This prospective cohort study aims to compare patients with severe mental disorders and with different substance use behaviors in terms of sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, hostility, impulsivity and aggressive behaviors. Furthermore, this study aims to assess differences in violent behaviors during a 1-year monitoring follow-up. METHODS: A total of 378 participants with severe mental disorders from Italian residential facilities

Tourette Syndrome and Chronic Tic Disorders: The Clinical Spectrum Beyond Tics.

The clinical surveillance and active management of Tourette syndrome (TS) and other primary chronic tic disorders cannot be limited to tics, as these patients manifest a spectrum of sensory-, behavioral-, cognitive-, and sleep-related problems that have a major impact on their functioning and quality of life, influencing enormously clinical decision making on a routine basis. The sensory phenomena of primary tic disorders consist of premonitory urges and heightened sensitivity to external somatosensory and interoceptive stimuli. Recent evidence suggests that raised interoceptive awareness may

Testosterone and aggressive behavior in man.

Atavistic residues of aggressive behavior prevailing in animal life, determined by testosterone, remain attenuated in man and suppressed through familial and social inhibitions. However, it still manifests itself in various intensities and forms from; thoughts, anger, verbal aggressiveness, competition, dominance behavior, to physical violence. Testosterone plays a significant role in the arousal of these behavioral manifestations in the brain centers involved in aggression and on the development of the muscular system that enables their realization. There is evidence that testosterone levels

Co-morbid disorders and sexual risk behavior in Nigerian adolescents with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent onset bipolar disorder often presents with co-morbid disorders of which psychoactive substance use disorders are notable. Mania symptoms and co-morbid psychoactive substance use disorders prone adolescents with bipolar disorder to impulsivity, impaired judgment, and risk taking behavior which often includes sexual risk behavior. There are dearth of information on pattern of co-morbid disorders and sexual risk behavior in adolescent onset bipolar disorder in Nigeria. This study assessed the prevalence and pattern of co-morbid disorders and determined associated factors of

Antisocial and impulsive personality traits are linked to individual differences in somatosensory maps of emotion.

Somatosensory experience is an important component of emotion, playing a prominent role in many traditional emotion theories. Nonetheless, and despite the extensive literature on the influence of individual differences in emotional processing, the relation between personality traits and emotion-related somatosensation has received little attention. Here, we addressed this question in a large sample of healthy individuals through the "bodily maps of emotion" behavioural paradigm, in which participants indicated the location and extent of their body sensations for the 6 basic and 4 additional so

Loss aversion predicts cigarette smoking status across levels of sociodemographic characteristics.

Loss aversion (LA) is a tendency to be more sensitive to potential losses relative to similar gains. Low LA is associated with increased risk for cigarette smoking and use of other substances. Previous studies of LA and smoking risk controlled for potentially confounding influences of sociodemographic characteristics associated with smoking risk. The present study replicates these earlier observations while also examining the generality of the association between low LA and smoking risk within different levels of each of the five sociodemographic risk factors for smoking (age, educational atta

Difficulties in Emotion Regulation: Are They the Preventable Cause of Suicide, Impulsivity, and Aggression in Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder?

BACKGROUND: Difficulties in emotion regulation have begun to be seen as the source of psychopathologies. It is one of the underlying factors of patients' suicidality, impulsivity, and aggression. This study aims to determine the difficulties in emotion regulation in schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) patients and their relationship with suicidality, aggression, and impulsivity. It also emphasizes the importance of emotion regulation in these patients. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: 52 healthy individuals, 58 BD, and 55 SZ patients in remission were included in the study. The participants wer

The distinction between irritability and anger and their associations with impulsivity and subjective wellbeing.

Irritability, anger, and impulsivity have important associations with psychological well-being. However, studying the internal relationships between such emotional constructs is challenging, largely because of the lack of precise operational definitions and extensively validated measurement tools. The aim of this study was to examine relationships between the above emotional constructs and how they relate to satisfaction with life and perceived negative impact on different life domains. Participants (N = 471) completed a self-report questionnaire online. Correlational analyses showed that high

The Relationship Among Autistic Traits, Impulsivity, and Functionality in Patients With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic mental disorder that causes disabilities. This study investigated the relationship among impulsivity, autistic traits, and disabilities in patients with OCD. We included 88 patients with OCD and 90 healthy volunteers without any mental disorders. The participants were evaluated using the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale, Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ), Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 (BIS-11), and World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS 2.0). Regression analyses revealed that AQ-attention switching and BIS-attentional

Impaired Metacognitive Differentiation, High Difficulty in Controlling Impulses and Non-acceptance of Emotions are Associated With the Severity of Gambling Disorder.

The role of metacognition in gambling disorder (GD) is underexplored. To date, only two studies have investigated the role of metacognitive functioning, but among the adolescent population. The first aim of the current research was to assess and compare adult male gamblers with healthy controls (HCs) in relation to metacognition, impulsivity and emotional dysregulation. The second aim was to identify the variables among metacognition, impulsivity and emotional dysregulation associated with the severity of GD by means of linear regression.A total of 116 adult males (58 with GD and 58 HCs) compl

Cerebellar impulsivity-compulsivity assessment scale.

OBJECTIVE: The cerebellum has been identified as the key brain region that modulates reward processing in animal models. Consistently, we recently found that people with cerebellar ataxia have impulsive and compulsive behaviors (ICBs), the main symptoms related to abnormal reward processing. Due to the lack of a validated scale to quantitatively measure ICBs in cerebellar disorders, we aim to develop and validate a new scale, Cerebellar Impulsivity-Compulsivity Assessment (CIA). METHODS: We recruited 62 cerebellar ataxia cases, categorized into those with ICBs and those without. We developed

A Critical Evaluation of the Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (RFQ).

The Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (RFQ) is an 8-item self-report measure of reflective functioning that is presumed to capture individual differences in hypo- and hypermentalizing. Despite its broad acceptance by the field, we argue that the validity of the measure is not well-established. The current research elaborates on problems of the RFQ related to its item content, scoring procedure, dimensionality, and associations with psychopathology. We tested these considerations across three large clinical and non-clinical samples from Germany and the US (total N = 2289). In a first study,

Offering small tangible rewards within social casino games increases in-play bets but does not impact real-money gambling.

Many video games incorporate gambling-like elements into their design (and vice versa). Social casino games - a type of video game that mimics gambling activities-are one such example. In the current experimental research, we examined whether offering tangible rewards (i.e., rewards with value outside the game) in a social casino game was associated with increased social casino game play and subsequent gambling. Participants (N = 213, Mage = 36.5, 55.3% female) were recruited from CloudResearch. They were randomly assigned to either a reward condition (n = 109) in which, following a week of so

Clarifying gambling subtypes: the revised pathways model of problem gambling.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The pathways model is a highly cited etiological model of problem gambling. In the past two decades, a number of studies have found support for the model's utility in classifying gambling subtypes. The aims of this paper were to refine empirically the model subtypes and to revise and update the model based on those findings. DESIGN AND MEASUREMENT: Observational study using data collected from treatment-seeking problem gamblers using the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) and the Gambling Pathways Questionnaire (GPQ). SETTING: Treatment clinics in Canada, Australia a

The acute and repeated effects of cigarette smoking and smoking-related cues on impulsivity.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Impulsivity may be a risk factor that increases vulnerability to nicotine dependence. However, nicotine exposure itself may directly increase impulsivity. This is a secondary analysis of the first study in a controlled laboratory setting, which assessed the effects of nicotine administration (acute and repeated) and exposure to smoking cues on behavioural impulsivity in humans (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT01395797). DESIGN AND METHODS: Twenty-seven smokers completed three tasks to assess behavioural impulsivity (the Immediate Memory Task and the Delayed Memory Tas

Mediating Effect of Attributional Biases in the Impulsivity-Aggression Relationship Among Adolescents: Therapeutic Implications.

Aggression is a multidimensional phenomenon, and for its better understanding, specificity involved in its dynamics must be explored. This article explores the role of attributional bias as a mediator between impulsivity and aggressive tendencies among adolescents. The mediating effect of hostile attributional bias (HAB) on the impulsivity-aggression relationship has not been studied extensively so far, especially in the Indian context. For testing the hypotheses, 320 participants within the age range 12 to 15 years (M age = 13.57 years) were selected and administered relevant standardized que
