BACKGROUND: Performing radiobiological experiments under general anesthesia is, in many cases, superior to treatment in unanesthetized animals or with intraperitoneal (i.p.) anesthesia. This is especially true for experiments where highly fractionated treatment schedules are used.

In the chronic inhalation experiment of sulfur dioxide(SO2), micronuclei(MN) frequencies in the polychromatophilic erythroblasts(PCE) of mouse bone marrow and the frequencies of cells with MN were significantly increased in dose-dependent manner. There was a significant difference between the male and the female animals. The results also showed that SO2 inhibited urethone-induced MN formation. These results furtherly confirm that SO2 inhalation was a clastogenic and genotoxic agent to mammalian cells, and the combined effects of SO2 and other mutagens are complex.

A randomized, placebo-controlled, multicenter trial evaluated the safety and efficacy of 300 mg aerosolized tobramycin solution for inhalation (TSI) administered twice daily for 4 weeks in 74 bronchiectasis patients colonized with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA). To study the relationship between sedation and respiration under N2O, we performed polysomnographic recordings in 15 healthy men with documented normal breathing patterns during sleep.
