Dyadic associations of depressive symptoms and cardiovascular health trajectories in middle-aged and older couples.

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms can contribute to poor cardiovascular health (CVH) but prior research largely focused on individual-based studies. Yet, health behaviours and outcomes are interlinked within social relationships, particularly in spouses. This study examined how depressive symptoms in opposite-sex spouses may jointly and uniquely impact CVH over time. METHODS: We analysed 4360 opposite-sex spousal dyads in the Health and Retirement Study-a prospective cohort of middle-aged and older adults (2004-2016). Depressive symptoms were measured at baseline (2004/2006) using the 8-item Ce

Is interpersonal wisdom individual or collective? Distinguishing the effects of ideal-partner consistency and normative desirability on relationship outcomes.

Social-cognitive and evolutionary perspectives suggest people should experience better relationship outcomes when their romantic partners better match their stated partner preferences or ideals. Nevertheless, recent work has questioned the strength of these effects by suggesting they are primarily driven by metrics of ideal-partner consistency that confound the partner qualities people uniquely value with those that are normatively more desirable (i.e., normative desirability) or common (i.e., normative commonality). The present research used six different metrics of ideal-partner consistency-

It Takes Two to Tango: The Interplay of Partners' Communicated Perspective-Taking, Positive Relational Experience During Conflict and Relationship Satisfaction in Young Adult Couples.

Research has yet to clarify the relational mechanisms through which communicated perspective-taking (CPT) during conflict relates to overall relationship satisfaction, and prior studies have largely overlooked its dynamic and interactive nature, often examining partners' contributions separately. To address these gaps, this study employed an observational dyadic design to examine, in a sample of 178 young adult couples, the unique and joint contributions of partners' CPT during conflict to their relationship satisfaction, as well as the role of positive relational experience during conflict in

The model of willingness to communicate in English based on general trust.

The present study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the Willingness to Communicate (WTC) model by examining general trust and other psychological factors such as confidence in a second language and international posture which predict WTC directly by using the reconstructed items of the WTC scale with 74 detailed communication situations, targeting Japanese general population. The reconstructed items outline specific communication scenarios from three angles: whether it was an active or passive interaction, whether the conversation would develop or not, and whether the conversati

Treatment modifiers of interpersonal functioning in psychotherapy for people with borderline personality disorder: Systematic review with meta-analyses of individual participant data.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is often accompanied by interpersonal dysfunction. Psychotherapy can improve interpersonal functioning, but individual characteristics may moderate outcomes. This systematic review used individual participant data meta-analysis (IPD-MA) to examine such moderators. METHOD: A literature search up to 26 November 2025 across 10 databases (including PubMed, Medline, Embase, PsychINFO, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Cochrane CENTRAL) identified randomised clinical trials (RCTs) investigating the effects of psychotherapy on interpersonal functioning in

Optimizing just-in-time adaptive interventions for interpersonal distress: mechanisms, prediction, and the challenge of engagement.

Common mental health disorders (CMD) feature fluctuating emotional and interpersonal symptoms inadequately addressed by traditional weekly therapies. Ecological momentary interventions offer potential for timely support, yet their mechanisms and optimal delivery contexts remain unclear. This secondary analysis of a randomized trial (N = 77) compared mindfulness and mentalization micro-interventions triggered by personalized symptom thresholds. We examined dynamic symptom networks, proximal effectiveness, engagement predictors, and distress forecasting in adults with CMD. Dynamic networks revea

Security priming in everyday life: How do symbols of close others support attachment in adulthood?

Security priming refers to the idea that exposure to simple, attachment-relevant cues-such as photographs of loved ones-can enhance psychological security and related outcomes. While security priming effects have been robustly demonstrated in laboratory settings, there is growing interest in whether such techniques can be effectively applied in everyday contexts, with an eye toward scalable interventions. In the present research, we examined whether using a romantic partner's photo as a phone lock screen image could influence attachment security. In Study 1 (N = 4,741), we found that people wh

The multidimensional impact of malnutrition in incurable cancer.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The physiological consequences of malnutrition are well-established, yet the disruption to psychological well-being, identity and interpersonal relationships is less known and equally significant. This review focuses on recent multidimensional evidence on malnutrition in incurable cancer, particularly the psychological, social and relational effects. RECENT FINDINGS: Malnutrition and cachexia carry physical, psychological and relational consequences. For those with incurable cancer, this can lead to social isolation. Furthermore, it can also cause distress, guilt, anxiety a…

The Couple Relationship Skills Inventory: Is There Added Benefit of Partner's Report?

Although many established measures assess individuals' relationship skills, relatively few incorporate reports from both partners to predict relationship functioning at the individual and couple levels. The Couple Relationship Skills Inventory (CRSI) is a multidimensional measure of seven relationship skill domains developed using a racially and economically diverse sample. The current study extended the CRSI by incorporating partner-reports of the focal individual's relationship skills and evaluated whether the self- and partner-report version (CRSI-SP) improved prediction of relationship qua

Bidirectional Within-Person Associations Between Callous-Unemotional Traits and Student-Teacher Relationships Across Elementary School.

Callous-unemotional (CU) traits characterize a distinct subgroup of children with conduct problems and are linked to poorer quality student-teacher relationships. Knowledge is lacking, however, about the directional dynamics underlying these associations at the within-person level. To address this gap, we examined the within-person associations between CU traits and teacher-child closeness and conflict across elementary school, as well as the invariance of these associations across sexes and reception of specialized services for conduct problems. Data from 463 at-risk children (46.2% girls, 8.

Seekers' and regulators' perspectives of interpersonal emotion regulation: Associations with personality pathology.

Personality disorders (PDs) are well characterized by deficits in interpersonal and emotional functioning, highlighting the importance of examining their intersection, such as interpersonal emotion regulation (IER). Given the dyadic nature of IER, characterizing the individuals who help regulate emotions, and their perceptions of these interactions, may further elucidate the process of IER in individuals with personality pathology. We aimed to directly characterize network partners that aid in IER and compare perceptions between both IER seekers and regulators. Primary participants, who were r

Differential Associations of Intrapersonal and Interpersonal Emotion Regulation with Generalized Anxiety and Social Withdrawal Among Children.

Anxiety and social withdrawal are common internalizing problems among children linked to poor emotion regulation (ER). We investigated how specific components of ER (emotion awareness, emotion regulation strategy) are associated with generalized anxiety and social withdrawal in the two ER domains (intrapersonal and interpersonal). Study participants were 398 fourth- and fifth-grade students (49% girls) and 22 teachers from a Midwestern state in the United States. Study constructs were measured with student self-report, peer nominations, and teacher reports. We found anxiety was linked to poore

Baseline correlates of functional impairment at 12 months in young people with borderline personality disorder: findings from the MOBY trial.

No studies have investigated baseline predictors of functioning among young people receiving treatment for BPD. The current study aimed to identify the baseline demographic, psychopathological and treatment correlates of interpersonal problems and social adjustment at 12-month follow-up among young people with BPD, who received early intervention in the Monitoring Outcomes of BPD in Youth (MOBY) randomised controlled trial. Of 139 randomised young people (aged 15 to 25 years) who completed interview and self-report measures at baseline (pre-treatment), 98 (Mage = 18.7, SD = 2.7) provided data

Dyadic coping and relationship satisfaction among couples with a chronic illness: A meta-analytical actor-partner interdependence model.

Chronic illness (CI) burdens both the patient and their romantic partner. CI management has been viewed as a dyadic process by theorists and clinical practitioners. Dyadic coping (DC) refers to the processes where one partner aids the other or both partners work together to cope with stress. We used the meta-analytical actor-partner interdependence model and its extension of actor-partner interdependence moderation model to evaluate the aggregated actor and partner effects of DC on relationship satisfaction (RS) in CI partners (CIP) and healthy partners (HP). This meta-analysis included 61 sam

Between Struggle and Strength: A Rapid Review of Dual-Trauma Couples.

Although several studies have shown that one person's trauma is associated with romantic relationship difficulties for both partners in adulthood, most have overlooked the particularity of dual-trauma couples, in which both partners have experienced traumatic experiences. This rapid review investigated the dynamics and challenges within dual-trauma couples. A rapid review methodology was employed to consolidate and evaluate existing knowledge in this field. Fifteen empirical research studies meeting the inclusion criteria were identified through a comprehensive search across multiple databases

Romantic Relationship Quality, Depression, and Problematic Drinking: A Comparison of Single and Partnered Sexual and Gender Minority Adolescents.

PURPOSE: To compare mental health and substance use between single and partnered sexual and gender minority (SGM) adolescents in the context of romantic relationship quality. METHODS: SGM adolescents (aged 15-17 years) reported on their relationship status (single vs. partnered) and completed measures of mental health (depression, anxiety) and substance use (problematic drinking, recent cannabis use). Partnered SGM adolescents also reported on their romantic relationship quality. RESULTS: Relationship quality moderated the extent to which being partnered was associated with depression and pr

The Role of Friends in Supporting Young People With Cancer: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: Peers play a crucial role in supporting wellbeing and psychosocial development for young people aged 12-25. However, a cancer experience often leads to challenges maintaining friendships. There have been no prior attempts to map or synthesise available research or resources on support specifically from friends for young people with cancer, limiting the capacity to draw conclusions or determine next steps for how to best support young people with cancer. This review aims to address this gap by mapping and synthesising the available literature and resources. METHODS: Included studies

When empathy goes wrong: the perceived cost of empathy reduces empathic reactions to a friend.

Empathy is susceptible to contextual cues that alter empathic reactions. When empathy is associated with unbearable discomfort, anticipated emotional pain, or financial burden, people tend to downregulate it. Reduced empathy has destructive consequences, but to date, the contextual antecedents of reduced empathy in close relationships due to perceived costs remain unexplored. In three studies (N = 733), we examined how the perceived cost of empathy influenced empathic responses toward close friends. When empathizing with a friend involved sharing negative emotions or where the friend hindered

Children see private correction as a cue to friendship.

Children use a number of cues to infer friendship. For instance, children believe that people who are similar, spend time together, and are loyal to each other are friends (Liberman & Shaw, 2019). Here, in two studies (total N = 524), we investigated whether 4- to 12-year-old children infer friendship using a novel cue: managing someone's reputation by correcting them in private. Children were asked whether an agent was better friends with a person they corrected in public, or one they corrected in private. Both younger (4- to 7-years-old) and older (8- to 12-years-old) children inferred stron

Victims of Misfortune are Blamed for Imposing Costs on Others : Testing a Cooperation-Dilemma Factor in Victim-Blame.

In four pre-registered studies, we tested implications from a cooperation model that explains victim-blaming and victim-devaluation as the result of cooperation dilemmas, as a way for people to avoid the costs of helping victims (who seem to be unpromising cooperation partners) without paying the reputational cost of being seen as ungenerous, reluctant cooperators. An implication of this perspective is that, if a victim of misfortune is seen as imposing costs on others by requesting help (as opposed to bearing the costs), they will be seen as persons of low character, avoided as future coopera
