Refractive outcomes using Barrett formulas and patient characteristics of cataract surgery patients with and without prior LASIK/PRK.

PURPOSE: The goal of this study is to describe characteristics of cataract surgery patients who previously underwent laser in situ keratomileusis/photorefractive keratectomy (LASIK/PRK) in comparison to non-LASIK/PRK cataract surgery patients including psychiatric comorbidities, as well as describe refractive prediction error after cataract surgery while accounting for axial length (AL) using the Barrett True-K and Barrett Universal II formulas. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of patients from the University of Colorado Cataract Outcomes Registry. The primary outcomes were refraction

PURPOSE: To compare wavefront-guided (WFG) and wavefront-optimized (WFO) photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in patients with myopia using objective and self-reported quality of vision outcomes. METHODS: A total of 40 eyes from 20 participants were prospectively randomized to receive WFG or WFO PRK with the WaveLight Allegretto Eye-Q 400-Hz excimer laser (Alcon Laboratories, Inc., Fort Worth, TX). The primary outcome measured was uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) at 12 months postoperatively. Secondary outcome measures included corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), less than 5% and l

A Modified Customized Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lens to Improve Visualization During Phacoemulsification in Ectatic Corneas.

Advanced Keratoconus and ectatic corneal diseases may lead to corneal thinning and irregular astigmatism. The optical distortion caused by these pathologies may result in poor visibility for the surgeon during phacoemulsification. Thus, the risk of complication would be increased intraoperatively (capsular rupture, vitreous loss). The aim of this case series was to use a modified customized Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) contact lens to improve visualization during all the stages of phacoemulsification in irregular corneas and to avoid open sky technique for cataract removal during penetrating kera

PURPOSE: To analyze the appearance, incidence, and characteristics of retinal diseases in myopic patients after refractive surgery. METHODS: We studied retinal disease observed in 9,239 consecutive eyes (5,099 patients) after refractive surgery. Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) was used to correct myopia in 5,936 eyes (3,184 patients, mean age 30.5 +/- 8.9 years); mean spherical equivalent refraction was -4.71 +/- 2.80 D. Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) was used to correct myopia in 3,009 eyes (1,734 patients, mean age 32.0 +/- 7.8 years); mean spherical equivalent refraction was -13.5

The role of epithelial membrane-associated mucin 4 in ocular surface health and corneal wound healing.

The purpose of this study was to determine the role of MUC4, a corneal membrane-associated mucin, on ocular surface health and corneal wounding healing using a Muc4 knockout (KO) mouse model. Complete ophthalmic examinations were performed on wildtype (WT), Muc4 heterozygous (Het) and Muc4 knockout (KO) mice, including slit lamp biomicroscopy, phenol red thread test (PRTT), intraocular pressure (IOP), and fluorescein staining. The mice were also assessed using optical coherence tomography (OCT), an advanced imaging technique. Dynamic contact angle goniometry was performed on ex vivo globes of

Variation in corneal biomechanical properties following continuous cross-linking treatment.

BACKGROUND: This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of transepithelial accelerated corneal cross-linking (transEpi ACXL) when applied separately or combined with phototherapeutic keratectomy (transPTK ACXL) in keratoconic eyes using biomechanical parameters. METHODS: The study included eyes with progressive keratoconus treated with either continuous transEpi ACXL or transPTK ACXL with 6 months follow-up. The following parameters were assessed preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively: biomechanically corrected intraocular pressure (bIOP), maximum and mean keratometry (Kmax a

A Case of Corneal Melting Associated with Topical Diclofenac After Phacovitrectomy for Macular Pucker in a Patient with Rheumatoid Arthritis.

INTRODUCTION: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used perioperatively and postoperatively in ocular inflammation and pain management. However, NSAIDs may cause ocular adverse effects. Postsurgical complications, including corneal stromal inflammation with or without epithelial ulceration and stromal melts, have been reported after anterior segment surgery, such as cataract surgery, penetrating keratoplasty, and photorefractive keratectomy. However, these drugs are also frequently used in vitreoretinal surgery for several indications, including the prevention and treatment
