Total hip arthroplasty after hip arthrodesis: functional outcomes, and mid-term survivorship integrating the fusion technique complexity score.

BACKGROUND: Conversion of hip arthrodesis to total hip arthroplasty (THA) is technically demanding because of altered anatomy, soft-tissue contractures, and long-standing biomechanical adaptations. Preoperative complexity varies widely, and contemporary data on functional recovery and complications remain limited. This study evaluates functional and radiographic outcomes after conversion THA and introduces a Fusion-to-THA Surgical Complexity Score (FTCS) to characterise preoperative difficulty and explore its association with perioperative outcomes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively re

The effects of different focus cues and motor learning strategies on landing mechanics in male handball players.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries are a major concern in sports, especially among athletes with limited ankle dorsiflexion, impacting performance and career longevity. Targeting kinetic and kinematic risk factors of high-risk sports actions through effective strategies is crucial for injury mitigation. This study aimed to assess the impact of internal focus (IF), and external focus (EF) within linear (LP) and differential learning (DL) methods on movement quality of a single leg drop jump (SL-DJ) task training in male handball players with restricted ankle dorsiflexion. Sixty-five prof

Baseline clinical and MRI risk factors for hamstring reinjury showing the value of performing baseline MRI and delaying return to play: a multicentre, prospective cohort of 330 acute hamstring injuries.

OBJECTIVES: Studies identifying clinical and MRI reinjury risk factors are limited by relatively small sample sizes. This study aimed to examine the association between baseline clinical and MRI findings with the incidence of hamstring reinjuries using a large multicentre dataset. METHODS: We merged data from four prospective studies (three randomised controlled trials and one ongoing prospective case series) from Qatar and the Netherlands. Inclusion criteria included patients with MRI-confirmed acute hamstring injuries (<7 days). We performed multivariable modified Poisson regression analysi

Alignment of the metatarsal heads affects foot inversion/eversion during tiptoe standing on one leg in demi-pointe position: A cross-sectional study on recreational dancers.

Classical ballet dancers stand on tiptoe in the demi-pointe position where the ankle is plantarflexed, and the toes extend around a mediolateral axis passing through the second metatarsal head. Foot sickling, the foot inversion/eversion when the forefoot is grounded, should be avoided to achieve esthetics and prevent injuries during tiptoe standing. The foot inversion/eversion angle may change depending on the metatarsal heads through which the toe extension axis passes. This study investigated the relationship between metatarsal alignment in both load positions and foot inversion/eversion ang

Longitudinal Changes in Glucose Metabolism of Denervated Muscle after Complete Peripheral Nerve Injury.

PURPOSE: Electrodiagnostic studies can obtain information 2 or 3 weeks after an acute nerve injury. Previous studies have shown increased glucose metabolism in denervated muscles 1 week after injury using 2-deoxy-2-[(18)F]fluoro-D-glucose ([(18)F]FDG) positron emission tomography (PET). Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the changes in glucose metabolism in denervated muscles using serial monitoring by [(18)F]FDG PET scans. PROCEDURES: Denervation was induced in eight male Sprague-Dawley rats (aged 7 weeks old) weighing 200-250 g. The right legs of the rats were denervated by resecting t

The effects of ultrasound stimulation on passive muscle stiffness of triceps surae.

Passive muscle stiffness is a critical mechanical property that influences muscle function and the risk of strain injury. This study aimed to investigate the acute effects of 1  MHz ultrasound stimulation on the passive muscle stiffness of the triceps surae. One leg of 20 healthy adults was assigned to the ultrasound-stimulated leg, while the other served as a control leg. The ultrasound-stimulated leg received continuous ultrasound (1  MHz, 2.0  W/cm2) for 10  min, while the control leg did not. Shear wave velocity (SWV), an index of passive muscle stiffness, was measured using shear wave ela

Discrepant Bleeding Patterns in a Case of Simultaneous Injuries: Hemodynamic Consequences of Bilateral Carotid Artery Transection.

In forensic practice, differences in hemorrhage volume among multiple injuries are often used to estimate the timing of trauma. We report a rare case in which multiple injuries sustained simultaneously exhibited marked discrepancies in hemorrhagic presentation. A man in his 30s was found deceased at the scene of a single-vehicle accident, in which his car had collided with a barrier. Forensic autopsy revealed complete bilateral transection of the common carotid arteries, cervical spinal cord transection, and cervical spine fractures. Additional injuries included a liver laceration and a lower
