UNLABELLED: Magnesium deficiency has been reported in patients with classical coeliac disease. Classical coeliac disease has been recently very rare, but the frequency of the silent or latent form has increased. The aim of the study was to evaluate the magnesium status in patients with coeliac disease diagnosed according to ESPGAN criteria. 41 GFD(+) patients aged 6-18 years, who were on a gluten-free diet (GFD) for 2.8 to 17.3 years (mean 11 years); with normal villous structure and IgAEmA(-), and 32 GFD(-) patients aged 5-17 years, with villous atrophy and IgAEmA(+): 8--after 7/12-13/12 of g…

Mg deficiency is a frequent complication of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) demonstrated in 13-88% of patients. Decreased oral intake, malabsorption and increased intestinal losses are the major causes of Mg deficiency. The complications of Mg deficiency include: cramps, bone pain, delirium, acute crises of tetany, fatigue, depression, cardiac abnormalities, urolithiasis, impaired healing and colonic motility disorders. Serum Mg is an insensitive index of Mg status in IBD. Twenty-four-hour urinary excretion of Mg is a sensitive index and should be monitored periodically. Parenteral Mg require

The clinical and pathophysiological significance and epidemiology of magnesium and phosphorus excess and deficit are discussed. In daily routine both ions largely remain "the forgotten electrolytes". With both elements deficits are clinically more important than excesses. Dietary intake, gastrointestinal and renal losses, shifts between intra- and extracellular fluid and sequestration within the extracellular compartment are the essential factors which determine body stores and the extracellular concentration of the electrolyte. The clinical signs of excess and deficit often lack specificity a

Details are given of a semi-synthetic low-magnesium diet that provides adequate short-term nutrition. The diet is made up of proprietary foodstuffs and is suitable for short-term magnesium deprivation studies in man. After five days on the diet four subjects demonstrated a marked fall in urinary magnesium excretion.
