Dynamic Reconfiguration of Visuomotor-Related Functional Connectivity Networks.

UNLABELLED: Cognitive functions arise from the coordination of large-scale brain networks. However, the principles governing interareal functional connectivity dynamics (FCD) remain elusive. Here, we tested the hypothesis that human executive functions arise from the dynamic interplay of multiple networks. To do so, we investigated FCD mediating a key executing function, known as arbitrary visuomotor mapping, using brain connectivity analyses of high-gamma activity recorded using MEG and intracranial EEG. Visuomotor mapping was found to arise from the dynamic interplay of three partly overlapp

Cross-modal distractors modulate oscillatory alpha power: the neural basis of impaired task performance.

Unexpected novel sounds capture one's attention, even when irrelevant to the task pursued (e.g., playing video game). This often comes at a cost to the task (e.g., slower responding). The neural basis for this behavioral distraction effect is not well understood and is subject of this study. Our approach was motivated by findings from cuing paradigms suggesting a link between modulations in oscillatory activity and voluntary attention shifts. The current study tested whether oscillatory activity is also modulated by a task-irrelevant auditory distractor, reflecting a neural signature of an inv

MEG-measured visually induced gamma-band oscillations in chronic schizophrenia: Evidence for impaired generation of rhythmic activity in ventral stream regions.

BACKGROUND: Gamma-band oscillations are prominently impaired in schizophrenia, but the nature of the deficit and relationship to perceptual processes is unclear. METHODS: 16 patients with chronic schizophrenia (ScZ) and 16 age-matched healthy controls completed a visual paradigm while magnetoencephalographic (MEG) data was recorded. Participants had to detect randomly occurring stimulus acceleration while viewing a concentric moving grating. MEG data were analyzed for spectral power (1-100Hz) at sensor- and source-level to examine the brain regions involved in aberrant rhythmic activity, and

Graph theoretical analysis of resting-state MEG data: Identifying interhemispheric connectivity and the default mode.

Interhemispheric connectivity with resting state MEG has been elusive, and demonstration of the default mode network (DMN) yet more challenging. Recent seed-based MEG analyses have shown interhemispheric connectivity using power envelope correlations. The purpose of this study is to compare graph theoretic maps of brain connectivity generated using MEG with and without signal leakage correction to evaluate for the presence of interhemispheric connectivity. Eight minutes of resting state eyes-open MEG data were obtained in 22 normal male subjects enrolled in an IRB-approved study (ages 16-18).

Lateralized auditory brain function in children with normal reading ability and in children with dyslexia.

We examined central auditory processing in typically- and atypically-developing readers. Concurrent EEG and MEG brain measurements were obtained from a group of 16 children with dyslexia aged 8-12 years, and a group of 16 age-matched children with normal reading ability. Auditory responses were elicited using 500ms duration broadband noise. These responses were strongly lateralized in control children. Children with dyslexia showed significantly less lateralisation of auditory cortical functioning, and a different pattern of development of auditory lateralization with age. These results provid

Valproate selectively reduces EEG activity in anterior parts of the cortex in patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy. A low resolution electromagnetic tomography (LORETA) study.

PURPOSE: To localize the cortical area where the anticonvulsive drug valproate (VPA) exerts its effect in patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE). METHODS: In a prior study we investigated 15 IGE patients in the untreated condition and compared their low resolution electromagnetic tomography (LORETA) results to a normal control group. The investigation of these patients was continued in the present study. All the 15 patients were treated with VPA and were followed by the authors. EEG was recorded after 3 months of VPA treatment in the seizure-free patients. A total of 2min of 19-c

Association of cortical disinhibition with tic, ADHD, and OCD severity in Tourette syndrome.

Hyperkinetic disorders may involve excess excitatory output from thalamus to cerebral cortex. Case-control, neurophysiological studies in persons with Tourette Syndrome (TS), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) support this model. To compare the strength of association between motor cortex inhibition and tic, ADHD, and OCD severity in TS, we used transcranial magnetic stimulation to measure motor cortex inhibition in 36 children and adults with TS. Current symptom severity was assessed with standard clinical rating scales and compared with n

[Visual information processing and the mechanism of vision. Clinical application].

Psychogenic disturbance of vision includes various abnormalities such as low vision, abnormal visual field, abnormal color sense and disturbance of binocular function, although there are no abnormalities either in the eyeball or optic nerve, and no organic changes in brain computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). To clarify these abnormalities, it is necessary first to study the mechanism of visual information processing. In this report, the mechanism of visual information processing such as visual acuity, visual field, vision and attention and binocular function was studi

Somatosensory evoked magnetic fields from primary sensorimotor cortex in juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.

The present study evaluated neurophysiologic function of the primary sensorimotor cortex in juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis. A 122-channel magnetometer, which allowed studies of the somatosensory system in millimeter and millisecond precision, was used to record somatosensory evoked magnetic fields to median nerve stimulation from 10 patients and their matched control subjects. In both patients and controls, the somatosensory evoked magnetic fields from primary sensorimotor area typically consisted of N20m, P35m, and P60m deflections. In the patients, N20m was significantly delayed, wh

The role of MEG cluster characteristics in defining the epileptogenic zone: A retrospective study of 101 seizure-free patients.

OBJECTIVE: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is used widely in presurgical evaluation of medically intractable epilepsy. Prior research has documented the added value of MEG in refining surgical strategies; however, not all MEG clusters require resection for seizure freedom, suggesting that they represent nodes within a broader epileptic network, with differing importance for epileptogenic zone (EZ) localization. We examined whether MEG cluster characteristics can identify clusters most relevant to EZ. METHODS: We studied 101 patients with focal epilepsy who underwent intracranial electroencephalo…

A generalizable OPM-MEG framework for time-resolved language decoding during natural speech production.

Non-invasive decoding of rapidly evolving cognitive and motor states is limited by trade-offs between temporal precision, spatial fidelity and tolerance to natural movement. We present a modality-matched benchmarking framework that evaluates optically pumped magnetometer magnetoencephalography (OPM-MEG) against electroencephalography (EEG) during visually cued overt speech production. Ten native Mandarin speakers produced six isolated vowel rhymes (100 repetitions per class) while OPM-MEG and EEG were recorded under the same task. We compared six feature representations and five classifiers us…

Right posterior theta reflects human parahippocampal phase resetting by salient cues during goal-directed navigation.

Animal and computational work indicate that phase resetting of theta oscillations (4-12 Hz) in the parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) by salient events (e.g., reward, landmarks) facilitates the encoding of goal-oriented information during navigation. Although well studied in animals, this mechanism has not been empirically substantiated in humans. In the present article, we present data from two studies (Study 1: asynchronous electroencephalography (EEG)-magnetoencephalography (MEG) | Study 2: simultaneous EEG-fMRI) to investigate theta phase resetting and its relationship with PHG blood oxygenation …

Optimization of OPM-MEG Layouts with a Limited Number of Sensors.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a non-invasive neuroimaging technique that measures weak magnetic fields generated by neural electrical activity in the brain. Traditional MEG systems use superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) sensors, which require cryogenic cooling and employ a dense array of sensors to capture magnetic field maps (MFMs) around the head. Recent advancements have introduced optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) as a promising alternative. Unlike SQUIDs, OPMs do not require cooling and can be placed closer to regions of interest (ROIs). This study aims to optimize …

Disrupted dynamic functional network connectivity in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) can result in harmful and long-lasting neurodevelopmental changes. Children with PAE or a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) have decreased white matter volume and resting-state spectral power compared to typically developing controls (TDC) and impaired resting-state static functional connectivity. The impact of PAE on resting-state dynamic functional network connectivity (dFNC) is unknown. METHODS: Using eyes-closed and eyes-open magnetoencephalography (MEG) resting-state data, global dFNC statistics and meta-states were examined in 89 children…

Connectomic Profiles and Cognitive Trajectories After Epilepsy Surgery in Children.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Neurocognitive outcomes after surgery for temporal lobe epilepsy in childhood are variable. Postoperative changes are not directly predicted by seizure freedom, and associations between epilepsy, neuropsychological function, and developing neural networks are poorly understood. Here, we leveraged whole-brain connectomic profiling in magnetoencephalography (MEG) to retrospectively study associations between brain connectivity and neuropsychological function in children with temporal lobe epilepsy undergoing resective surgery. METHODS: Clinical and MEG data were retro…

Connectivity of the Frontal Cortical Oscillatory Dynamics Underlying Inhibitory Control During a Go/No-Go Task as a Predictive Biomarker in Major Depression.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by core functional deficits in cognitive inhibition, which is crucial for emotion regulation. To assess the response to ruminative and negative mood states, it was hypothesized that MDD patients have prolonged disparities in the oscillatory dynamics of the frontal cortical regions across the life course of the disease. METHOD: A "go/no-go" response inhibition paradigm was tested in 31 MDD patients and 19 age-matched healthy controls after magnetoencephalography (MEG) scanning. The use of minimum norm estimates (MNE) examined the cha…
