Studies on the prevalence and distribution of ectoparasites in Peru were carried out during a period of 2 1/2 years. The survey included 17,421 domesticated guinea pigs (Cavia aperea f. porcellus) from 14 departments in all bioregions and altitude levels and 143 wild guinea pigs (Cavia aperea) from three areas (El Paramo, Junin and La Raya) in the Andes and the Cordillera. The guinea pig is an important source of food, especially for the rural population, the infestation with ectoparasites, such as fleas, lice or mites greatly contributes to a decrease in production and low performance. Different pest arthropods and dermatophytes occurring primarily in farm animals may be transmissible to man and produce human dermatoses. The movement and cutaneous penetration habits of external parasites often cause crusted papules, severe itching and dermatitis or may damage their hosts by blood-sucking or by sensitizing them to their saliva. Furthermore different dermatophytes should be considered a possible cause of human skin lesions. Farm animals (cattle, pig, poultry, and rabbit) can transmit external parasites (ticks: Ixodes ricinus, Argas reflexus; fleas: Ceratophyllus gallinae, Spil

BACKGROUND: A central question in evolutionary parasitology is to what extent ecology impacts patterns of parasitism in wild host populations. In this study, we aim to disentangle factors influencing the risk of parasite exposure by exploring the impact of sleeping site ecology on infection with ectoparasites and vector-borne hemoparasites in two sympatric primates endemic to Madagascar. Both species live in the same dry deciduous forest of northwestern Madagascar and cope with the same climatic constraints, they are arboreal, nocturnal, cat-sized and pair-living but differ prominently in slee

Malassezia species are lipophilic yeasts that inhabit the skin of warm-blooded animals and that are associated with various skin disorders. Although Malassezia is frequently isolated from the external ear canal of cats, the influence of ectoparasites such as Otodectes cynotis (ear mites) on Malassezia species diversity has received limited attention. During an investigation of Malassezia diversity in cat ear canals infested with Otodectes cynotis, five Malassezia strains were isolated from the external ear canals. Phylogenetic analyses based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and

ObjectiveWe aimed to compare Demodex positivity before and during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.MethodsPatients who underwent a standardized skin surface biopsy and direct microscopic examination for Demodex species in the prepandemic or pandemic period at a tertiary care center were included. The positivity rates in the two periods were compared across age, sex, and months using a proportional Z-test. A p value <0.05 was considered statistically significant.ResultsIn total, 573 and 523 patients were included in the pandemic and prepandemic periods, respectively. Demodex positivity was

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a common facial skin disorder mainly affecting middle-aged adults. Its aetiology is unknown and pathogenesis uncertain. Activation of the host innate immune response has been identified as an important factor. The Demodex mite population in the skin of rosacea patients is significantly higher than in patients with normal skin, suggesting that they may be of aetiological importance in this disorder.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the potential of Demodex mites to interact with the host immune system.
METHODS: Live Demodex mites were extracted from normal facial skin of contro

PURPOSE: To investigate the prevalence of ocular Demodex folliculorum (DF) in an Irish population. To validate a modified Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire and employ it to evaluate the relationship between dry eye symptoms and the presence of DF.
METHODS: One hundred and fifty-six subjects were enrolled in an epidemiological cross-sectional prevalence study. Each subject completed a novel questionnaire on ocular symptoms and was assessed for the presence of DF. Data was analysed to assess prevalence and to search for significant links between each symptom and DF.
RESULTS: An overal

Host specificity of vectors is an important but understudied force shaping parasite evolution and the relationship between hosts and parasites. Low vector specificity may allow a vectored parasite to invade new host species, whereas high specificity of vectors may reduce the host range of the parasite and favor specialization. The 'generalist' and widely distributed avian skin mite Myialges caulotoon Speiser (Acari: Epidermoptidae) is unusual because females require an insect vector to complete their life cycle. Myialges caulotoon was previously reported from 2 lousefly (Diptera: Hippoboscidae

Bark and ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) are major pests of agricultural and forest systems and include some species which attack hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) as well. Although hazelnut cultivation is increasingly threatened by insect and mite pests, yet little is known about how management practices can reduce infestations. This study investigated bark and ambrosia beetles in hazelnut orchards from two highly productive areas: Viterbo district (central Italy) and Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region (Republic of Georgia). Three phytosanitary management strategies were comp

Bee declines have been partly attributed to the impacts of invasive or emerging parasite outbreaks. For western honeybees, Apis mellifera, major losses are associated with the virus-vectoring mite, Varroa destructor. In response, beekeepers have focused breeding efforts aimed at conferring resistance to this key parasite. One method of many is survival-based beekeeping where colonies that survive despite significant Varroa infestations produce subsequent colonies. We argue that this 'hands-off' approach will not always lead to Varroa resistance evolving but rather tolerance. Tolerance minimize

BACKGROUND: Patients with papulopustular rosacea have a higher density of Demodex folliculorum mites on their faces than normal subjects but the role, if any, of their mites in initiating inflammation is disputed. Selective antibiotics are effective in reducing the inflammatory changes of papulopustular rosacea, but their mode of action is unknown.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether a D. folliculorum-related bacterium was capable of expressing antigens that could stimulate an inflammatory immune response in patients with rosacea.
METHODS: A bacterium (Bacillus oleronius) was isolated from a

Eggplant or brinjal (Solanum melongena) is a popular vegetable grown throughout Asia where it is attacked by brinjal fruit and shoot borer (BFSB) (Leucinodes orbonalis). Yield losses in Bangladesh have been reported up to 86% and farmers rely primarily on frequent insecticide applications to reduce injury. Bangladesh has developed and released four brinjal varieties producing Cry1Ac (Bt brinjal) and is the first country to do so. We report on the first replicated field trials comparing four Bt brinjal varieties to their non-Bt isolines, with and without standard insecticide spray regimes. Resu

The objective of this study was to characterize Notoedres from Florida, USA and to determine if rabbits and squirrels share the same Notoedres species. From July 2022-November 2024, 19 suspected mange (i.e., alopecia and crusty lesions) cases were identified in 16 eastern cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus floridanus), an eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), a marsh rabbit (Sylvilagus palustris), and a northern raccoon (Procyon lotor) in Florida. Most were in poor nutritional condition with multifocal alopecia and hyperkeratosis. Histologically, mites were noted in the variably hyperkerat

BACKGROUND: On a global scale scabies is one of the most common dermatological conditions, imposing a considerable economic burden on individuals, communities and health systems. There is substantial epidemiological evidence that in tropical regions scabies is often causing pyoderma and subsequently serious illness due to invasion by opportunistic bacteria. The health burden due to complicated scabies causing cellulitis, bacteraemia and sepsis, heart and kidney diseases in resource-poor communities is extreme. Co-infections of group A streptococcus (GAS) and scabies mites is a common phenomeno

BACKGROUND: Psoroptic mange is a chronic, refractory, contagious and infectious disease mainly caused by the mange mite Psoroptes ovis, which can infect horses, sheep, buffaloes, rabbits, other domestic animals, deer, wild camels, foxes, minks, lemurs, alpacas, elks and other wild animals. Features of the disease include intense pruritus and dermatitis, depilation and hyperkeratosis, which ultimately result in emaciation or death caused by secondary bacterial infections. The infestation is usually transmitted by close contact between animals. Psoroptic mange is widespread in the world. In this
