Case management as a mindset.

Melanie Richards was a $3.5 million baby who provided the motivation for developing the case management model used by Friendly Hills HealthCare Network. Born five years ago with gastroschisis, Melanie was transferred from Friendly Hills Regional Medical Center to a tertiary care hospital, where she spent 11 1/2 months in the neonatal intensive care unit. No discharge plans were ever made, and it wasn't until Friendly Hills HealthCare Network started to manage Melanie's care that anyone imagined that this infant could go home, should go home, and would thrive at home. Case management saved Mela

Transfusions in Children's Surgery: Characterization and Development of a Model for Benchmarking.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative blood transfusions in children are associated with patient morbidity and are often overutilized. In this study, we identify procedures most commonly associated with the use of red blood cells (RBC) in childrens surgery and develop risk-adjusted models for benchmarking. METHODS: Data from the 2012-2015 National Surgical Quality Improvement Program-Pediatric participant use data files were used. CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) codes were grouped to identify the procedures where transfusions were allocated and associated patient demographics and comorbidities. Pati

Outcomes of management for potential deceased donors.

BACKGROUNDS: Potential deceased donor management optimization is important for organ recovery maximization. Before optimization, the current state of donor management and predictors for organ recovery require analysis. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed organ procurement activity and medical management for 2005 to 2010 potential brain death donors at Seoul National University Hospital. RESULTS: Of 316 contacts for potential brain-dead donors, 129 (39.7%) patients were transferred to the donor management team. Among the causes of transfer failure, issues related to proper donor management a

Network of job demands-resources and depressive symptoms in critical care nurses: a nationwide cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Critical care nurses are vulnerable to depression, which not only lead to poor well-being and increased turnover intention, but also affect their working performances and organizational productivity as well. Work related factors are important drivers of depressive symptoms. However, the non-liner and multi-directional relationships between job demands-resources and depressive symptoms in critical care nurses has not been adequately analyzed. Understanding these relationships would be helpful for reducing depression, increasing nurses' well-being and retain healthcare forces. METHO

Metabolic complexity and nutritional reductionism. Deconstructing the single active ingredient paradigm in protein and amino acid supplements.

Metabolism is an adaptive and highly interconnected system in which biological outcomes emerge from dynamic interactions among genes, proteins, metabolites, signaling pathways, microbiota, and environmental factors. Nevertheless, nutritional research has traditionally relied on a reductionist paradigm, attributing biological effects to isolated compounds acting on specific molecular targets through linear cause-effect relationships. While this approach has been instrumental in elucidating biochemical mechanisms and addressing nutrient deficiencies, its explanatory and predictive power is limit

Biye And Getage: Community Health Resilience During COVID-19 in Indonesia's Geographically Isolated Ulu Ogan Community.

Geographically isolated rural communities face compounding structural barriers to formal healthcare, yet their capacity to organize health governance through culturally embedded frameworks remains undertheorized in health communication scholarship. Using the culture-centered approach (CCA) as theoretical framework and analytical lens, this qualitative study examined how the Ogan Malay community of Ulu Ogan, South Sumatra, Indonesia, mobilized cultural practices to sustain health resilience during COVID-19 amid structural marginalization. Through in-depth interviews with 17 informants, we analy

[Prevalence and health correlates of specific forms of psychological violence against healthcare workers: A secondary data analysis based on a representative sample].

BACKGROUND: Psychological violence in the workplace poses a significant risk to employee health. In patient-centered care contexts, it often takes the form of abusive behavior by people outside the workplace, such as patients or their relatives and associates. This article examines the prevalence of psychological violence, which manifests itself in derogatory, harassing, or humiliating behavior by third parties towards healthcare workers, and analyzes its associations with the health of those affected. METHODS: The analyses are based on data from a representative Germany-wide study on bullyin

[Introducing triage-initiated imaging examinations at a Hungarian emergency department].

INTRODUCTION: Triage is fundamental to emergency department operations and patient safety. Extended triage models, in which professionals can also initiate laboratory and imaging tests, are increasingly adopted. However, the expanded scope of practice may increase psychological and physical stress on triage nurses. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our work is to develop the methodological framework for the introduction of triage-initiated imaging examinations at a Hungarian emergency department, to establish the basis for patient safety monitoring, and to map the facilitating and impeding factors of imp

Veteran health information exchange volume and 30-day readmissions, avoidable hospitalizations, and in-hospital mortality: evidence from community and Veterans Health Administration direct care.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a greater volume of health information exchange (HIE) between care delivery systems improves patient outcomes and whether effects differ between community care and Veterans Health Administration (VHA) direct care settings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used electronic health record data for all VHA enrollees from January 2022 to December 2023 (3144 medical center-months; 2.4 million patients per month). HIE volume, the number of unique patient-days with completed exchanges, was our key explanatory variable. Primary outcomes were 30-day readmissions, avoidable hospi

Tuning in: A mixed methods study evaluating clinician perceptions of measurement-based care training and their association with posttraining skills use.

Understanding clinician perspectives and preferences is critical to advancing measurement-based care (MBC) training and implementation efforts. Yet, clinician perceptions of these and how they relate to MBC uptake are understudied. This mixed methods study aimed to evaluate clinicians' MBC training perceptions, posttraining MBC use, and predictors of MBC uptake. Clinicians in Department of Defense settings completed surveys immediately (N = 366) and 1 month (n = 88) posttraining. Most viewed MBC training as relevant (89.5%) and useful (81.8%); similarly, most were confident using symptom (87.9

Strengthening School Safety Through Governmental Research-Practice Partnerships: the Arizona School Safety Program.

Government research-practice partnerships (GRPPs) can bridge the gap between empirical research and policy implementation. However, it remains unclear precisely how state-level governmental agencies navigate evidence-based policymaking. The ongoing collaboration between the Arizona Department of Education and the research team at Arizona State University began as a need for an annual evaluation of the School Safety Program, which aims to improve school safety by providing funding and training to school resource officers and school mental health professionals throughout the state. Between Denial and Delay: Barriers to Accessing Nonpharmacological Interventions for Seniors With Mild-to-Moderate Dementia in Canada.

Dementia is a growing public health concern in Canada, yet timely access to nonpharmacological interventions (NPIs) for persons with dementia (PWDs) remains poorly understood. This critical ethnographic study explored factors influencing access to NPIs among private-dwelling seniors with mild-to-moderate dementia and their family/friend care partners (CPs) in Alberta, Canada. Guided by McLeroy et al.'s Ecological Perspective and Habermas' Critical Social Theory, we conducted 53 semi-structured interviews with eight PWDs and 21 CPs across 20 families. Reconstructive, thematic analysis revealed

Agitation in dementia: Evidence-based consensus recommendations.

Agitation is among the most disabling behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia, contributing substantially to caregiver burden, institutionalization, and healthcare utilization. Considering the modest efficacy and significant adverse effects associated with psychotropic medications, person-centered approach (PCA) and non-pharmacological interventions are recommended as first-line management strategies. We conducted a comprehensive search on PubMed, Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library for systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and randomized controlled trials evalua

Current Management of Craniosynostosis: A Nordic Pediatric Neurosurgery Network Study.

Historically, management of craniosynostosis (CS) has been marked by substantial variation. Although recent advances in diagnostics, minimally invasive techniques, and computer-assisted planning might be expected to promote greater uniformity, significant differences persist, as shown in a large US survey of current practice patterns. To clarify the extent of heterogeneity in the Nordic countries (28 million inhabitants), the authors conducted a comprehensive survey of all centers treating CS in the region. All 11 centers responded (100%). Marked heterogeneity was evident across organizational

Demographic and organizational factors fostering vaginal birth after caesarean section in Italy: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Caesarean section (CS) rates have increased worldwide, raising concerns about maternal and child health and healthcare costs. Although vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC) is considered a safe alternative, its use remains limited and variable. We aimed to identify sociodemographic, clinical, and organizational factors associated with VBAC utilization in Tuscany, Italy, and to assess the impact of VBAC on perinatal outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective population-based study using administrative healthcare data (2021-2024), including women with one previous CS who deliver

Interventional nephrology in Italy: Past achievements, present challenges, and future directions.

Interventional nephrology has progressively emerged as a discipline aimed at integrating clinical management with procedural expertise in the care of patients with kidney disease. Historically, Italy has represented one of the leading international models in the management of dialysis access and ultrasound-guided procedures, largely due to the direct procedural involvement of nephrologists. This narrative review examines the historical evolution, status, and future perspectives of interventional nephrology in Italy. Early national surveys and data from the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patter
