Acute physiologic effects of secondhand smoke exposure in children.

INTRODUCTION: We investigated the hypothesis that exhaled carbon monoxide (eCO), heart rate (HR), and blood pressure (BP) would increase acutely in exposed but not in unexposed children. METHODS: In a nonrandomized controlled design, parent-child dyads were assigned to groups based on exposure: child subjects, 7-18 years of age, exposed to smoking daily in the home (exposed) or with no household exposure (unexposed control). HR, BP, and eCO were measured before and after exposure to a parent smoking 1 cigarette (exposed) or a time-lapse equivalent (control). The primary analysis compared mean

The change of asthma course during pregnancy.

The course of asthma during pregnancy is variable. When the total pregnant asthmatic population is considered, one-third improve, one-third are unchanged, and one-third experience increased symptoms. The course of asthma may be influenced by the many physiologic changes during pregnancy as well as the severity of the pre-existing asthma. Prospective studies have found that severe asthmatics have exacerbations during pregnancy more often than mild asthmatics. The first trimester and the last month of pregnancy are relatively free of exacerbations. The second and third trimesters have more poten

Gastric acidity following pancreaticogastrostomy with pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy.

Pancreaticogastrostomy (PG) has been reintroduced and employed occasionally as a useful alternative to pancreaticojejunostomy (PJ) after Whipple resection or pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (PPPD). Although the physiologic alteration in the stomach is important for the correlation between gastric and pancreatic functions, the actual intragastric pH profile after PG is still unclear. This study was conducted to investigate the physiologic changes in gastric pH and serum gastrin and secretin levels before and after PPPD reconstructed with PG (PPPD-PG) in humans. Twenty-four hour conti

An Agentic Multimodal Sensing Architecture for CT-Guided Wearable and Respiratory Monitoring in Oncology Care.

Oncology care increasingly depends on heterogeneous sensing streams generated by computed tomography (CT), radiotherapy planning systems, wearable devices, home respiratory sensors, patient-reported outcomes, and clinical records. These data streams are often processed separately, limiting their value for longitudinal, context-aware review. This study proposes OncoSense-Agent, a reliability-aware agentic multimodal sensing architecture for CT-guided respiratory monitoring in oncology care. The architecture links CT-derived anatomical evidence with wearable physiology, respiratory symptoms, fun

Contactless Respiratory Waveform Estimation Using a Depth Camera and AI-Based Body Detection.

Computed tomography (CT) examinations pose challenges for continuous patient observation, particularly when adverse events such as severe reactions to contrast media occur. To improve patient monitoring in such situations, this preliminary study proposes a contactless method for respiratory waveform estimation using a depth camera and AI-based body detection. The method identifies anatomically relevant respiratory regions and extracts depth-based motion signals while subjects are seated facing the camera, which is positioned approximately 2 m away. Performance was evaluated experimentally usin

Emerging technologies and AI-assisted tools in cardiopulmonary monitoring.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cardiopulmonary monitoring is fundamental to critical care, yet traditional approaches rely on simplified thresholds that capture only a fraction of the rich information contained within waveforms, imaging, and continuous physiological data. This review examines emerging applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) that enhance waveform interpretation, automate point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), enable predictive monitoring, and extend advanced assessment capabilities into low-resource settings. RECENT FINDINGS: AI models now identify deterioration

Soft, skin-interfaced electronics enable cannula-free wireless monitoring of sleep respiration.

Sleep-related breathing disorders are prevalent yet frequently underdiagnosed, in part due to limitations of conventional respiratory monitoring technologies. Standard nasal cannulas introduce airflow resistance, discomfort, and poor long-term adherence, constraining at-home and longitudinal assessment. Here, we report a soft, skin-interfaced nasal patch that enables cannula-free, wireless monitoring of respiratory activity during sleep. The device is constructed from ultrathin, elastomeric materials that conform to the nasal surface, coupling respiratory-induced tissue deformation to a strain

Radar-based inspiratory-to-expiratory time ratio estimation: a validation study.

Respiration is a key indicator of health and wellbeing, with metrics such as respiratory rate (RR), inspiratory time (TI), expiratory time (TE), and the inspiratory-to-expiratory time (I:E) ratio offering insights into conditions ranging from acute life-threatening and chronic diseases to symptom management. While traditional methods already measure these parameters with high accuracy, they still require contact-based sensors, limiting their practicality for continuous monitoring. This study evaluates radar as a non-contact alternative by validating multiple radar-derived respiratory metrics a

High-throughput analysis of multimodal monitoring data: the role of machine learning in early warning systems for high-risk neonates.

The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) generates vast amounts of high-throughput, multimodal monitoring data, offering unprecedented potential for identifying early signs of clinical deterioration in high-risk neonates. However, the traditional threshold-based alarm systems are plagued by high false alarm rates and alarm fatigue, failing to harness this data complexity. This narrative review examines the role of machine learning (ML) in transforming early warning systems (EWSs) by effectively analysing these complex data streams. We first characterise the diverse sources-including physiologic

Wearable sensors for monitoring neurogenic dysphagia: a scoping review.

Neurological disorders, such as Parkinson's disease and stroke, often lead to neurogenic dysphagia, a swallowing disorder that compromises nutrition and increases the risk of malnutrition, aspiration of food, and even death. Although instrumental assessments remain the gold standard for evaluating swallowing function, their invasiveness, cost, and reliance on specialized clinical facilities limit their routine use. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, IEEE Xplore, and Web of Science, including only peer-reviewed studies using non-invasive wearable devices for assessing and moni

Ultra-Stretchable and Skin-Conformal Piezoelectric Electronic Skin for Self-Powered Human Motion Monitoring.

Soft piezoelectric electronic skins are expected to work reliably under repeated joint bending, where both stretchability and stress transfer efficiency are important. In this work, a BaTiO3/PDMS piezoelectric electronic skin, denoted as BPPE-skin, was prepared by a blade-coating method. Rather than only increasing the amount of piezoelectric filler, this study focuses on how the PDMS matrix composition affects the mechanical deformation and electrical response of the composite. The PDMS base-to-curing-agent ratio was adjusted from 5:1 to 30:1, and the BaTiO3 loading was varied from 10 to 90 w

Wearable Devices for Monitoring and Management of Comorbid Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Hypertension: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: As an established driver of hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) generates a significant cardiovascular burden when both disorders are present. This intersection not only compromises nocturnal hemodynamics but also hampers long-term clinical management. Yet, current health care delivery rarely integrates the simultaneous and continuous tracking of these dual burdens. While wearable technology provides a noninvasive, pragmatic toolset for synchronized physiological monitoring, research remains largely siloed within single-disease frameworks. Consequently, clinical evidence su

A High-SNR Wearable Respiratory Monitoring System with Directional Airflow Sensing Enabled by Triple-Asymmetric Magnetic Microcolumn Arrays.

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) calls for the continuous and reliable monitoring of respiratory airflow. In clinical practice, polysomnography (PSG) commonly measures nasal airflow using cannulas or masks that confine the flow path, which often reduce comfort and may disturb natural sleep. Measuring airflow directly in open air would be more convenient, but it is prone to interference from ambient airflow, temperature, and humidity, and most existing sensors do not provide information on flow direction. Here, we report a directional open-path respiratory airflow sensor based on a triple-asymm

Noncontact respiratory monitoring during sleep: comparison of the touchless flow signal with respiratory inductance plethysmography flow (RIPflow) signal to assess respiratory events.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: A nonintrusive sleep monitoring technology based on the data from a commercially available depth sensing camera has been utilized for respiratory monitoring and shown to have good performance in assessing respiratory rates across a range of rates. This noncontact or touchless, technology allows continuous respiratory monitoring without attaching probes to the patient. We have noticed a strikingly similar morphology between the noncontact flow signal (NCMflow) and the flow signal derived using the chest and abdomen respiratory inductance plethysmography (RIPflow) bands.
