BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Climatic attributes have been associated with relative mosquito abundance and transmission of mosquito borne infections in many parts of the world, especially in warm and tropical climatic regions. The main objectives of this study were to assess the change in seasonal pattern of Japanese encephalitis (JE) vectors, their density, to elucidate whether the lagged climate variables (precipitation, temperature and humidity) are associated with JE vector density, and to determine if temperature and precipitation are similarly important for the rise in the number of potentia

BACKGROUND: The Old World sand fly, Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli), a vector of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis, is usually controlled by insecticides, including anticholinesterases. Previous studies have revealed 85% amino acid sequence identity of recombinant P. papatasi acetylcholinesterase (rPpAChE1) to mosquito AChE. They identified synthetic carbamates that selectively inhibited rPpAChE1 and circumvented the G119S mutation responsible for high-level resistance to anticholinesterases. This study reports the construction, baculovirus expression, and biochemical properties of rPpAChE1 cont

Host age variation is a striking source of heterogeneity that can shape the evolution and transmission dynamic of pathogens. Compared with vertebrate systems, our understanding of the impact of host age on invertebrate-pathogen interactions remains limited. We examined the influence of mosquito age on key life-history traits driving human malaria transmission. Females of Anopheles coluzzii, a major malaria vector, belonging to three age classes (4-, 8- and 12-day-old), were experimentally infected with Plasmodium falciparum field isolates. Our findings revealed reduced competence in 12-day-old

Malaria transmission relies on the successful development of Plasmodium parasites in the Anopheles mosquito vector. Within the mosquito midgut, malaria parasites encounter a resident bacterial flora and parasite-bacteria interactions modulate Plasmodium development. The mechanisms by which the bacteria interact with malaria parasites are still unknown. The intestinal microbiota could regulate immune signaling pathways or produce bacterial compounds that block Plasmodium development. In this study, we characterized Escherichia coli strains previously isolated from the Anopheles mosquito midgut

Wetlands have traditionally been associated with harbouring mosquitoes, a well-known nuisance and vectors of diseases. Within mosquito life cycle, oviposition is a determinant event by shaping their individual fitness and vectorial capacity. The study was conducted in one of the main temperate wetlands in South America. We used Generalized Linear Models to study the relation between temperature, precipitation, tidal regime, land use, microenvironment, and the occurrence of floodwater (Ochlerotatus and Psorophora spp.) and raft-laying (Culex and Uranotaenia spp.) mosquitoes using temporary pool

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a mosquito-borne zoonotic disease caused by the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). Pigs and water birds are the main amplifying and maintenance hosts of the virus. In this study, we conducted a JEV survey in mosquitoes captured in pig farms and water bird wetland habitats in Taiwan during 2005 to 2012. A total of 102,633 mosquitoes were collected. Culex tritaeniorhynchus was the most common mosquito species found in the pig farms and wetlands. Among the 26 mosquito species collected, 11 tested positive for JEV by RT-PCR, including Cx. tritaeniorhynchus, Cx. annulu

The risk of infection (RI) with Wuchereria bancrofti by vector mosquitoes has been conventionally estimated from the biting population of all age classes. This estimate of RI had no correlation with microfilaria (mf) prevalence and intensity of infection in humans. A new method for estimating RI from a resting population of Culex quinquefasciatus is proposed based on a longitudinal study in seventeen sites in Pondicherry, India. Unlike previous estimates, RI calculated by the present method considering the density of parous mosquitoes collected per man-hour and the mean number of infective sta

INTRODUCTION: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the efficacy of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) in reducing malaria incidence and malaria-related mortality among vulnerable populations.
METHODOLOGY: A comprehensive search of Scopus, Medline, and CINAHL (up-to-April 2, 2026) identified experimental studies (randomised and cluster-randomised trials) evaluating the effect of ITNs impact for malaria control, and the protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42024609183). Pooled-effect-sizes [rate-ratios(RRs) and odds-ratios (ORs)] were calculated, and meta-regression was conducted t

Mosquito-borne diseases kill millions of people each year. Therefore, many innovative research and population control strategies are being implemented but, most of them require large-scale production of mosquitoes. Mosquito rearing depends on fresh blood from human donors, experimentation animals or slaughterhouses, which constitutes a strong drawback since high blood quantities are needed, raising ethical and financial constraints. To eliminate blood dependency and the use of experimentation animals, we previously developed BLOODless, a patented diet that represents an important advance towar

Concurrent ingestion of microfilariae (mf) and arboviruses by mosquitoes can enhance the transmission of virus compared with when virus is ingested alone. We studied the effect of mf enhancement on the extrinsic incubation period (EIP) of dengue 1 virus within Aedes aegypti mosquitoes by feeding mosquitoes on blood that either contained virus plus Brugia malayi mf or virus only. Mosquitoes were sampled over time to determine viral dissemination rates. Co-ingestion of mf and virus reduced viral EIP by over half. We used the computer simulation program, DENSiM, to compare the predicted patterns

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell trait (SCT) refers to the carriage of one abnormal copy of the β-globin gene, the HbS allele. SCT offers protection against malaria, controlling parasite density and preventing progression to symptomatic malaria. However, it remains unclear whether SCT also affects transmission stages and mosquito infection parameters. Deciphering the impact of the SCT on human to mosquito malaria transmission is key to understanding mechanisms that maintain the trait in malaria endemic areas.
METHODS: The study was conducted from June to July 2017 among asymptomatic children living in

An important vector control program is ongoing to lower the risk of malaria transmission in the French military camp of Port-Bouët, Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire). However, some autochthonous malaria cases are regularly suspected. An entomological survey was conducted in June 2004 in the camp to assess malaria transmission and evaluate the pyrethroid and organophosphate resistance of the malaria vectors. The average mosquito biting rate was 178.0 bites per person per night. Mosquitoes belonging to the Anopheles gambiae (Diptera: Culicidae) complex and the Anopheles funestus group were collected. An.

Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) (Diptera: Culicidae) is the main vector of viruses causing dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever, worldwide. This report focuses on immuno-blocking four critical proteins in the female mosquito when fed on blood containing antibodies against ferritin, transferrin, one amino acid transporter (NAAT1), and acetylcholinesterase (AchE). Peptides from these proteins were selected, synthetized, conjugated to carrier proteins, and used as antigens to immunize New Zealand rabbits. After rabbits were immunized, a minimum of 20 female mosquitos were fed on each rabbit, per

Worldwide, vector-transmitted diseases account for more than 17% of all infectious diseases and cause more than 700,000 deaths annually. The primary strategy to control the transmission of dengue, chikungunya and Zika focuses on the control of their vectors. Vector control programs depend mainly on the use of insecticides. However, these measures have failed to yield the desired results because the lack of proper control decreases their effectiveness over time. Also, the effect of insecticide use on non-target organisms, environmental contamination, and the development of insecticide resistanc

Most alphaviruses are transmitted by mosquito vectors and infect a wide range of vertebrate hosts, with a few exceptions. Eilat virus (EILV) in this genus is characterized by a host range restricted to mosquitoes. Its chimeric viruses have been developed as safe and effective vaccine candidates and diagnostic tools. Here, we investigated the interactions between these insect-specific viruses (ISVs) and mosquito cells, unveiling their potential roles in determining vector competence and arbovirus transmission. By RNA sequencing, we found that these ISVs profoundly modified host cell gene expres
