Impact of depth of invasion on local recurrence in R0 resected node-negative oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluates the impact of depth of invasion (DOI) on local recurrence (LR) in node-negative oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). METHODS: Fifty-one patients were retrospectively reviewed from an institutional database. Patients were evaluated for local control (LC). Cox-proportional hazards modeling was used to calculate hazard ratios. RESULTS: There were 84.3% T1/2 and 15.7% T3/4 classification tumors. The 3-year overall survival rate was 97.9%. Local failure rate was 5.7% with a 3-year LC of 93.6%. On Univariate analysis, increased hazard of LR was noted with eac

Better outcome for parotid versus neck metastasis of head and neck cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma: a new report on reemerging data.

INTRODUCTION: Regional metastases of cutaneous head and neck squamous cell carcinoma occur in approximately 5 % of cases, being the most important prognostic factor in survival, currently with no distinction between parotid and neck metastasis. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prognostic features among patients with head and neck cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma exhibiting regional metastasis. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma who underwent parotidectomy and/or neck dissection from 2011 to 2018 at a single institutio

Multidisciplinary management of locally advanced and metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.

Non-melanoma skin cancers are the most prevalent form of cancer, with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cscc) being the 2nd most common type. Patients presenting with high-risk lesions associated with locally advanced or metastatic cscc face high rates of recurrence and mortality. Accurate staging and risk stratification for patients can be challenging because no system is universally accepted, and no Canadian guidelines currently exist. Patients with advanced cscc are often deemed ineligible for either or both of curative surgery and radiation therapy (rt) and, until recently, were limited t

Intrapapillary capillary loop classification in magnification endoscopy: open dataset and baseline methodology.

PURPOSE: Early squamous cell neoplasia (ESCN) in the oesophagus is a highly treatable condition. Lesions confined to the mucosal layer can be curatively treated endoscopically. We build a computer-assisted detection system that can classify still images or video frames as normal or abnormal with high diagnostic accuracy. METHODS: We present a new benchmark dataset containing 68K binary labelled frames extracted from 114 patient videos whose imaged areas have been resected and correlated to histopathology. Our novel convolutional network architecture solves the binary classification task and e

[Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma in a 12-year-old boy].

This is a case report on a middle grade differentiated keratinized squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx in a 12-year-old boy. Squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx is very rare in children and adolescents and in older literature studies less than 70 cases have been reported in children. Histologically the same variants are present as in adults. The way to the final diagnosis of laryngeal carcinoma often takes longer in children because dysphonia or dyspnoe are often caused by other pediatric diseases, risk factors such as those found in adults cannot be elucidated and many symptoms can be due

[Oral cancer -diagnosis and therapy-.].

Oral cancer is a malignant neoplasm that occurs in the oral cavity. Squamous cell carcinoma accounts for over 90%of the oral cancers, and others include adenocarcinoma derived from minor salivary gland, sarcoma, malignant lymphoma and metastatic cancer. The number of oral cancer patients in Japan is about 3-times higher than the current number. Age-adjusted male-to-female ratio is 3:2, which is higher in males than in females. Of oral cancers, tongue carcinomas accounts is the most common and accounts for 40%of oral cancers. The oral cavity, an entrance of the digestive system, is exposed to c

Misreporting of study design and validation status in a study of early tumour shrinkage in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

This letter to the Editor addresses a fundamental inconsistency in the reporting of study design and validation status in the article by Zhou et al. published in Cancer Imaging. The authors state in the Methods section that the study retrospectively analyzed 125 patients, yet the Introduction and Discussion claim that the study prospectively validated the prognostic value of early tumour shrinkage (ETS) and depth of response (DoR). Prospective validation requires a priori model specification and evaluation on subsequently collected data, whereas retrospective analyses are inherently susceptibl

Classification and prediction of chemoradiotherapy response and survival from esophageal carcinoma histopathology images.

Whole slide imaging (WSI) of Hematoxylin and Eosin-stained biopsy specimens has been used to predict chemoradiotherapy (CRT) response and overall survival (OS) of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients. This retrospective study collected 279 specimens in 89 non-surgical ESCC patients through endoscopic biopsy between January 2010 and January 2019. These patients were divided into a CRT response group (CR + PR group) and a CRT non-response group (SD + PD group). The WSIs have segmented approximately 1,206,000 non-overlapping patches. Two experienced pathologists manually delineated

[The application of induction chemotherapy in the treatment of locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma].

Standard treatment for patients with locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (LAHNSCC) whose larynx could not be preserved surgically consists mainly of concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). Induction chemotherapy (ICT) followed by radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy is also an alternative option. However, whether ICT could provide survival benefits for patients with LAHNSCC, besides its role in laryngeal preservation and selecting the treatment modality, is still controversial. The article summarizes the current position of ICT for LAHNSCC and discusses the standard regimen of ICT

The oral microbiome and its role in oral squamous cell carcinoma: a systematic review of microbial alterations and potential biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide. Despite advances in diagnosis and treatment, the incidence of OSCC is increasing, and the mortality rate remains high. This systematic review aims to examine the potential association between the composition of the oral microbiota and OSCC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study's protocol was developed according to the PRISMA guidelines. Several search engines, including Medline-PubMed, Scopus (via Elsevier), and Google Scholar, were used to identify original studies that analyzed differences in the oral

Radiation Therapy for HPV-Positive Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: An ASTRO Clinical Practice Guideline.

PURPOSE: Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) is a distinct disease from other head and neck tumors. This guideline provides evidence-based recommendations on the critical decisions in its curative treatment, including both definitive and postoperative radiation therapy (RT) management. METHODS: ASTRO convened a task force to address 5 key questions on the use of RT for management of HPV-associated OPSCC. These questions included indications for definitive and postoperative RT and chemoradiation; dose-fractionation regimens and treatment volumes

Diagnostic, Prognostic, and Therapeutic Role for Angiogenesis Markers in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Narrative Review.

Despite refinements to diagnostic and therapeutic approaches over the last two decades, the outcome of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) has not shown substantial improvements, especially regarding those with advanced-stage disease. Angiogenesis is believed to be a turning point in the development of solid tumors, being a premise for mass growth and potential distant dissemination. Cancer-induced angiogenesis is a result of increased expression of angiogenic factors, decreased expression of anti-angiogenic factors, or a combination of both. The assessment of angiogene

HYPORT: Phase 1 Study of 3-Week Hypofractionated Postoperative Radiation Therapy for Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Shortening the overall radiation therapy (RT) treatment time has advantages in cost and treatment burden, but data on hypofractionated RT in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma are limited. This study assessed the safety of moderately hypofractionated RT in the postoperative setting. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients with completely resected stage I-IVB squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, or larynx with intermediate risk factor(s) including T3/4 disease, positive lymph node(s), close margin(s), perineural invasion, and/or lymphovascular invasion were
