A practical approach to sexual abuse allegations: Netherlands Expert Committee for Equivocal Sexual Abuse Allegations.

Equivocal sexual abuse allegations are those in which the details of the alleged offence(s) are uncertain. The circumstances are ambiguous, there is limited evidence, and it is unclear how police investigations should proceed. This article discusses the challenges such allegations pose for police, prosecution, judges and mental health experts, and advocates for the use of multidisciplinary expert opinion during the investigation. The practical application of this approach by the Netherlands Expert Committee for Equivocal Sexual Abuse Allegations (LEBZ) is described, which has assessed over 900…

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E) isolated from bean sprouts in the Netherlands.

Community-acquired carriage and infections due to extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E) are increasing worldwide, resulting in increased morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs. The origins of community-acquired ESBL-E carriage and infections remain unclear. Bean sprouts are a potential source of Enterobacteriaceae for the community, as illustrated by outbreaks of pathogenic Enterobacteriaceae in the past. The current study focuses on contamination of retail bean sprouts with ESBL-E in the Netherlands. Of 131 bean sprout samples purchased between 2013 and 201…

Coxiella burnetii infection among blood donors during the 2009 Q-fever outbreak in The Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: In 2007, 2008, and 2009 outbreaks of Q-fever occurred in The Netherlands with increasing magnitude. The 2009 outbreak with 2354 reported cases is the largest human Q-fever outbreak ever recorded. To assess the extent of infection and the safety of donated blood, we tested local blood donations for presence of Coxiella burnetii antibodies and DNA. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Starting May 2009, more than 40,000 serum samples were collected from all consenting blood donors in the areas with high Q-fever incidence. The 1004 samples from the areas with the highest number of reported case…

Improving surveillance of infectious diseases in child daycare settings: insights from a pilot study in the Netherlands.

INTRODUCTION: Child daycare centres (DCCs) are high-risk settings for infectious disease transmission. Although Dutch DCCs are legally required to report unusually high numbers of infections to Public Health Services (PHS), underreporting is common. Our pilot study aims to enhance DCC surveillance using a simple paper-based syndromic tool and wastewater monitoring. METHODS: Large DCCs in the Dutch PHS-region Zuid-Holland Zuid were invited. During 16 weeks in summer and winter, DCCs recorded weekly counts of children (0-4 years) and staff with respiratory, gastrointestinal and skin infections

A mixed-methods evaluation of a large-scale online gatekeeper training to prevent youth suicides in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: The increasing trend in suicides among young people emphasizes the urgent need for effective prevention strategies. Gatekeeper trainings (GKTs) equip individuals in a young person's network with skills to recognize signs of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, initiate supportive conversations, and facilitate referrals to appropriate care. This study examines the reach of a large-scale Dutch online-GKT in training both informal and formal gatekeepers. METHODS: Longitudinal data were collected from Dutch adults who participated in the online-GKT between October 2022 and March 2023. Pri

Socioeconomic inequalities in the association between diet quality and incident cardiovascular diseases: A prospective study in the Netherlands.

AIMS: Lower socioeconomic position (SEP) groups have higher risks of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), with diet quality being a crucial risk factor. However, whether the association between diet quality and incident CVD differs across SEP (education and income) groups is unclear, which was examined in this study. METHODS: This study included participants aged 30-80 years, free of CVD at baseline, from the Dutch Lifelines cohort. The Lifelines Diet Score, a diet quality indicator based on Dutch dietary guidelines, was calculated with data assessed by a 110-item food frequency questionnaire. Cox
