Direct-Write Defects for Bias-Free Two-Dimensional Optical Synapses Towards In-Sensor Motion Detection.

Optoelectronic synaptic devices, particularly those based on two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), emulate biological synaptic functions, promising in neuromorphic computing. However, most TMD-based synapses rely on external gate or bias control, leading to complicated device architecture and high-power consumption. Here, we demonstrate a gate-free and bias-free optical synapses, based on monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) homojunction with its counterpart made of spatially controlled sulfur (S) vacancies, obtained through laser patterning. By precisely controlling t

Hybridization of graphene-gold plasmons for active control of mid-infrared radiation.

Many applications in environmental and biological sensing, standoff detection, and astronomy rely on devices that operate in the mid-infrared range, where active devices can play a critical role in advancing discovery and innovation. Nanostructured graphene has been proposed for active miniaturized mid-infrared devices via excitation of tunable surface plasmons, but typically present low efficiencies due to weak coupling with free-space radiation and plasmon damping. Here we present a strategy to enhance the light-graphene coupling efficiency, in which graphene plasmons couple with gold locali

Synthesis, photophysical and electrochemical properties of a blue emitter with binaphthalene and carbazole units.

A blue emitter, 3,3'-(2,2'-dimethoxy-[1,1'-binaphthalene]-6,6'-diyl)bis(9-benzyl-9H-carbazole), was synthesized by Suzuki coupling reaction. The photophysical properties of the emitter in solution were firstly investigated by UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence emission techniques. The results indicate that the emitter has excellent optical and electron transfer properties. The maximum absorption and emission peaks of the emitter are 302 nm and 406 nm with 67.4% fluorescence quantum yield in chloroform, respectively. Thermal stability study reveals that the emitter has a good thermal stability

Comparison of tumor and normal tissue oxygen tension measurements using OxyLite or microelectrodes in rodents.

In this study we compare oxygen tension (PO2) histograms measured with O2 microelectrodes and a new optical PO2 measurement device, the OxyLite, in normal tissues (mouse spleen and thymus) and in tumors (R3230Ac in rats) (n = 5-6). The transient response to glucose infusion or 100% O2 breathing (hyperoxia) was also measured in tumors. PO2 histograms of spleen and thymus with the two devices were not different. The OxyLite tumor PO2 histogram, however, was left-shifted compared with the microelectrode (median PO2 1.0 vs. 4.0 mmHg, P = 0.016). Both probes responded to acute hyperglycemia with a

Synthetic cranial MRI from 3D optical surface scans using deep learning for radiation therapy treatment planning.

BACKGROUND: Optical scanning technologies are increasingly being utilised to supplement treatment workflows in radiation oncology, such as surface-guided radiotherapy or 3D printing custom bolus. One limitation of optical scanning devices is the absence of internal anatomical information of the patient being scanned. As a result, conventional radiation therapy treatment planning using this imaging modality is not feasible. Deep learning is useful for automating various manual tasks in radiation oncology, most notably, organ segmentation and treatment planning. Deep learning models have also be

A case of neuromyelitis optica (Devic's syndrome) in systemic lupus erythematosus. Clinicopathologic report and review of the literature.

An interesting case of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is presented in which the clinical onset of myelopathy strongly suggested demyelinating disease. Later, intracranial hypertension developed on two occasions. Postmortem examination showed the systemic lesions of SLE. In addition, demyelinating lesions were found in the spinal cord and the optic nerve, the neuropathologic picutre of Devic's syndrome, a variant of multiple sclerosis. We question whether some of the cases showing necrotic myelopathy might have an autoimmune pathogenesis.

Air-fed cold atmospheric plasma device as a safe and effective anti-SARS-CoV-2 air filter.

Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) displays antiviral properties, and its efficacy and safety in daily use are subject to full elucidation. In this work, we develop an air-fed CAP device, by inhaling and filtering, to directly inactivate SARS-CoV-2 in the air. The plasma shows a high intensity with reactive nitrogen and oxygen species in optical emission, with plasma electron temperature and density of 0.31 eV and 3.25 × 1017 m-3, respectively, confirming a strong discharge for SARS-CoV-2 disinfection. A qualitative analysis of the device’s discharge process is conducted using a two-dimensional flu

A device for phototesting patients before PUVA therapy.

A device is described and validated for rapid and easy phototesting of patients at the start of a course of PUVA therapy. The phototesting template consists of metal foil with four apertures of 10 mm diameter, mounted in pliable polyurethane. One aperture is open, and the other three each incorporate a grid of hexagonal holes of differing size which attenuate the radiation, resulting in relative intensities at the skin surface of 1, 2, 4 and 8. Thus, a single exposure through the foil of, for example, 8 J/cm2, would allow the minimal phototoxic dose to be determined as either 1, 2, 4, 8, or >

Noninvasive real-time dynamic monitoring of white blood cells based on microscopic imaging and deep learning.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: White blood cells (WBCs) are key biomarkers of immune status, but current monitoring still relies on intermittent blood sampling and hematology analyzers, which are invasive and lack real-time, dynamic information. This work aims to develop a noninvasive system that continuously monitors WBC dynamics in nailfold microcirculation by combining a compact optical imaging device with deep learning-based detection and tracking. METHODS: We designed a portable microscopic imaging system that records high-frame-rate videos of nailfold capillaries under 532 nm illumination, w

A thorium-229 optical nuclear clock with feedback loop.

The laser-accessible nuclear transition in the thorium-229 isotope has been identified as a candidate for realizing an optical nuclear clock1 that might outperform current optical clocks based on electron-shell transitions in atoms or ions2. It is expected to be more robust against external perturbations3,4 and to provide enhanced sensitivity in clock-based tests of the fundamental principles of physics5,6. Here we realize a thorium-229 nuclear clock by stabilizing a continuous-wave laser to the 148-nm nuclear transition with rapid feedback based on absorption spectroscopy7. The thorium-229 nu

Insight into the photoelectric characteristics and photocatalytic water splitting performances of van der Waals heterostructures Cs2PbI4/MX2 (M = Mo, W; X = Se, S).

The photoelectric characteristics and photocatalytic water splitting performances of van der Waals heterostructures Cs2PbI4/MX2 (M = Mo, W; X = Se, S) were investigated using first principles calculations. Four stable heterostructures were obtained with indirect narrow gaps. Among them, Cs2PbI4/MoSe2, Cs2PbI4/MoS2 and Cs2PbI4/WSe2 belong to type-II heterostructures, and Cs2PbI4/WS2 is a type-I heterostructure. High optical absorption efficiency and high carrier mobility imply that type-I heterostructure Cs2PbI4/WS2 has broad potential application prospects in light-emitting devices. Moreover,

Electric Response of Twisted π-Conjugated 9,9'-Bifluorenylidene Dyes in Liquid Crystal Media.

The synthesis of twisted 9,9'-bifluorenylidene dyes was accomplished through a palladium-catalyzed dual C-H activation and annulation transformation of the corresponding bis-biaryl alkyne precursor. This method enables efficient construction of the twisted 9,9'-bifluorenylidene framework with precise substitution patterns. The reaction conditions facilitated the formation of both cis- and trans-isomers, each exhibiting unique structural configurations that significantly influenced their physical properties. Notably, these isomers demonstrated distinct thermal behaviors, as evidenced by differe

Controlling the Subpicosecond Coherent Spin and Valley Dynamics with Anomalous Magnetic Proximity Effect.

Spin-and-valley-tronics explores the spin and valley degree of freedom for power-efficient and high-speed information storage and processing. A critical challenge in advancing spin-and-valley-tronic devices toward quantum operation lies in achieving coherent control over the spin and valley dynamics. A gigantic magnetic field is generally required to initiate fast coherent spin and valley precession to beat the subpicosecond valley decoherence in transition metal dichalcogenides. The magnetic proximity effect (MPE) can enhance the effective valley and spin magnetic moment, which has been explo

Film treatment-driven evolution of caesium lead bromide nanocrystals into layered 3D/2D CsPbBr3/CsPb2Br5 heterostructures.

Colloidal caesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) nanocrystals (NCs) are attractive building blocks for optoelectronic devices due to their high optical quality, compositional tunability, and processing versatility. However, post-deposition treatments required to improve film connectivity and charge transport can induce phase instability, most notably the transformation of CsPbBr3 into the layered CsPb2Br5 phase. Here, we present a systematic investigation of how conventional thermal annealing, solvent washing, and ligand-exchange protocols applied to spin-coated CsPbBr3 nanocrystal films drive the for

Probing Phonon Polaritons via Electron Microscopy: A Review.

Phonon polaritons (PhPs) are hybrid excitations arising from the coupling of optical phonons and electromagnetic waves, providing a versatile platform for exploring strong light-matter interaction studies and engineering the infrared response of polar materials. Their capability to confine and manipulate light well below the diffraction limit, combined with low losses, has enabled breakthroughs in subwavelength waveguiding, hyperlensing, infrared imaging, and molecular sensing. While far-field spectroscopy and scanning near-field optical microscopy have been widely used to characterize PhPs, t
