Racial and ethnic disparities in medical history taking: detecting substance use among low-income pregnant women.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether providers' medical history-taking of substance use varies with their patients' race or ethnicity. DESIGN/SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: The medical records of 1083 low-income women who delivered at an urban teaching hospital over a 12-month period were reviewed and data were abstracted. The frequency with which the presence or absence of substance use was documented was compared among Black, Hispanic, and White women. Multivariate models predicting documentation of data on substance use were also built. RESULTS: Information on substance use was more often documented in

Service provider perspectives on implementing the 'F-words for child development': an innovative approach to children's health and developmental services.

BACKGROUND: The 'F-words for Child Development'-Functioning, Family, Fun, Friends, Fitness and Future-provide a framework that brings to life key World Health Organization ideas about child health and development in an innovative and family-friendly way. Given international uptake of the F-words, understanding service providers' (SPs') experiences and perceived impact of F-words on pediatric disability and developmental services is important. OBJECTIVES: This study explored SPs' (i) knowledge of the F-words and confidence in using the framework; (ii) perceptions and experiences using F-words;

DSG2 Expression Marks a Stromal-Immune Organizational State in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Immune exclusion in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) limits immunotherapy efficacy, yet the molecular determinants of stromal-immune organization remain incompletely characterized. The desmosomal cadherin DSG2 is highly expressed in squamous epithelium; its role in shaping the tumor microenvironment (TME) is unknown. METHODS: We integrated bulk RNA-seq from 836 HNSCC patients (TCGA-HNSC n = 566, GSE65858 n = 270), single-cell RNA-seq (GSE139324, n = 26 patients, 133,308 cells), spatial transcriptomics (GSE208253, n = 12), proteomics (CPTAC-HNSCC, n = 108),

The Mediating Role of Emotional Intelligence in the Job Satisfaction and Job Performance of Medical Secretaries: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background/Objectives: Medical secretaries, who serve as patients' first point of contact and are frequently exposed to stress arising from illness, waiting, and the hospital environment, remain under-examined in health-workforce research. Previous studies have positioned emotional intelligence in different roles within job-attitude and performance models, including as an antecedent of job satisfaction. Because cross-sectional self-report data cannot establish temporal ordering or causal mediation, the present study examined whether emotional intelligence statistically accounts for part of the

Integrating Patient-Reported Outcomes into Atrial Fibrillation Care Pathways: Implementation Challenges, Health System Implications, and Future Directions.

Background/Objectives: Atrial fibrillation (AF) imposes a substantial long-term clinical and healthcare system burden, recurrent hospitalizations, impaired quality of life, and increasing long-term healthcare costs. Although patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are increasingly used in AF research and clinical practice, their broader role in healthcare delivery, implementation, and system-level decision-making remains insufficiently defined. Existing assessment strategies frequently prioritize symptom burden while underrepresenting cognitive, emotional, social, and functional dimensions o

Incorporating Systems-Level Stakeholder Perspectives into the Design of Mobile Integrated Health Programs.

OBJECTIVES: Despite early evidence of effectiveness, cost-savings, and resource optimization, mobile integrated health (MIH) programs have not been widely implemented in the United States. System, community, and organizational-level barriers often hinder evidence-based public health interventions, such as MIH programs, from being broadly adopted into real-world clinical practice. The objective of this study is to identify solutions to the barriers impeding the implementation of MIH through interviews with multilevel stakeholders. METHODS: Using the CENTERing multi-level partner voices in Impl

Fighting for menstrual equity through period product pantries.

BACKGROUND: Menstruators facing period poverty often struggle with menstrual hygiene and waste management, which can result in harmful short- and long-term health outcomes such as urinary tract infections, yeast infections, and vulvar contact dermatitis. Research indicates that 42% of menstruators in the United States have difficulty affording period products. Traditional methods of distributing period products through social services may unintentionally undermine menstruators' agency, leading to disempowerment and inefficient resource allocation. Period product pantries are a novel approach a
