A hospital-based child and adolescent overweight and obesity treatment protocol transferred into a community healthcare setting.

BACKGROUND: Due to the pandemic of child and adolescent overweight and obesity, improvements in overweight and obesity treatment availability and accessibility are needed. METHODS: In this prospective study, we investigated if reductions in body mass index (BMI) standard deviation scores (SDS) and waist circumference (WC) would occur during 1.5 years of community-based overweight and obesity treatment based upon an effective hospital-based overweight and obesity treatment protocol, The Children's Obesity Clinics' Treatment protocol. Height, weight, and WC were measured at all consultations. C…

Weight gain since age of 20 as risk of metabolic syndrome even in non-overweight individuals.

PURPOSE: Metabolic syndrome (MetS), regardless of the presence of obesity, is known as a risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Weight gain after age 20 reported to be associated with these diseases. Impact of the difference between the body mass index (BMI) at examination and BMI at age 20 (ΔBMIexa-20y) on MetS, especially in non-overweight individuals, remains to be elucidated. METHODS: We analyzed the data of 24,363 individuals (14,301 men and 10,062 women) in this cross-sectional study. The diagnosis of MetS was diagnosed when three or more of the following criteria were present: hy…

Overweight in children and its perception by parents: cross-sectional observation in a general pediatric outpatient clinic.

BACKGROUND: Childhood overweight is a growing problem in industrialized countries. Parents play a major role in the development and the treatment of overweight in their children. A key factor here is the perception of their child's weight status. As we know of other studies, parental perception of children's weight status is very poor. This study aimed to determine factors associated with childhood overweight and parental misperception of weight status. The height and weight of children, as reported by parents were compared with measured data. METHODS: The study was conducted at a general ped…

Low association between fasting and OGTT stimulated glucose levels with HbA1c in overweight children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes and prediabetes are defined based on different methods such as fasting glucose, glucose at 2-hour in oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), and glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). These parameters probably describe different deteriorations in glucose metabolism limiting the exchange between each other in definitions of diabetes. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between OGTT and HbA1c in overweight and obese children and adolescents living in Germany. METHODS: Study population: Overweight and obese children and adolescents (n = 4848; 2668 female) aged 7 to 17 years wi…

Effects of low-carbohydrate diet therapy in overweight subjects with autoimmune thyroiditis: possible synergism with ChREBP.

The thyroid is one of the metabolism regulating glands. Its function is to determine the amount of calories that the body has to burn to maintain normal weight. Thyroiditides are inflammatory processes that mainly result in autoimmune diseases. We have conducted the present study in order to have a clear picture of both autoimmune status and the control of body weight. We have evaluated the amount of either thyroid hormones, or antithyroid, or anti-microsomal, or anti-peroxidase antibodies (Abs) in patients with high amounts of Abs. In a diet devoid of carbohydrates (bread, pasta, fruit, and r

Effects of 8-week swimming training on carotid arterial stiffness and hemodynamics in young overweight adults.

BACKGROUND: Exercise has been found to either reduce or increase arterial stiffness. Land-based exercise modalities have been documented as effective physical therapies to decrease arterial stiffness. However, these land-based exercise modalities may not be suitable for overweight individuals, in terms of risks of joint injury. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of 8-week swimming training and 4-week detraining on carotid arterial stiffness and hemodynamics in young overweight adults. METHODS: Twenty young male adults who were overweight were recruited and engaged in 8-wee…

Validity of energy intake estimated by digital photography plus recall in overweight and obese young adults.

BACKGROUND: Recent reports have questioned the adequacy of self-report measures of dietary intake as the basis for scientific conclusions regarding the associations of dietary intake and health, and reports have recommended the development and evaluation of better methods for the assessment of dietary intake in free-living individuals. We developed a procedure that used pre- and post-meal digital photographs in combination with dietary recalls (DP+R) to assess energy intake during ad libitum eating in a cafeteria setting. OBJECTIVE: To compare mean daily energy intake of overweight and obese …
