Pharmacological Treatments for Presbyopia.

Accommodation is the change in dioptric power of the eye. It is a dynamic process that allows focusing on an object at all distances. In order to focus sharply, three physiological responses, known as the triad of accommodation, are produced by a change in pupil size, a change in shape and position of the lens, and ocular convergence. This is modulated by the autonomic nervous system, mainly the parasympathetic nervous system. Presbyopia is a refractive condition that occurs with aging, usually manifesting around 40-50 years of age, and is a result of the loss of accommodation in the eye, caus…

Neural reflex pathways in intestinal inflammation: hypotheses to viable therapy.

Studies in neuroscience and immunology have clarified much of the anatomical and cellular basis for bidirectional interactions between the nervous and immune systems. As with other organs, intestinal immune responses and the development of immunity seems to be modulated by neural reflexes. Sympathetic immune modulation and reflexes are well described, and in the past decade the parasympathetic efferent vagus nerve has been added to this immune-regulation network. This system, designated 'the inflammatory reflex', comprises an afferent arm that senses inflammation and an efferent arm that inhib

Trans-auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation in the Treatment of Recovered Patients Affected by Eating and Feeding Disorders and Their Comorbidities.

INTRODUCTION: Eating and feeding disorders (EFD's) represent the psychiatric pathology with the highest mortality rate and one of the major disorders with the highest psychiatric and clinical comorbidity. The vagus nerve represents one of the main components of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system and is involved in important neurophysiological functions. Previous studies have shown that vagal nerve stimulation is effective in the treatment of resistant major depression, epilepsy and anxiety disorders. In EFD's there are a spectrum of symptoms which with Transcutaneous auricular …

Vagal influence during worry and cognitive challenge.

The primary foci of the study were exploration of the linkage between cognitive and autonomic inflexibility of worry and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and examination of the effects of an analog cognitive restructuring task on this relationship. Cardiac responses of GAD and non-GAD participants were measured to examine the sympathetic and parasympathetic effects of worry and cognitive challenge. Diagnostic groups of undergraduate students were determined via administration of a structured interview, yielding a GAD group (n=16) and a control group (n=19) of individuals without GAD, depress

Age-related changes in glycogen synthase kinase 3beta (GSK3beta) immunoreactivity in the central nervous system of rats.

Although glycogen synthase kinase 3beta (GSK3beta) is emerging as a prominent drug target in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and stroke, very little is known about age-related changes in GSK3beta expression and GSK3beta phosphorylation. Therefore, we examined age-related changes in immunoreactivities for GSK3beta and phosphorylated GSK3beta (pGSK3beta) in the central nervous system. In aged rats, there were significant increases in GSK3beta immunoreactivity in the cell bodies and processes of pyramidal cells in most cortical regions. GSK3beta immuno

Alterations of autonomic nervous activity preceding nocturnal variant angina: sympathetic augmentation with parasympathetic impairment.

BACKGROUND: Autonomic nervous discharge has been implicated in the pathogenesis of coronary artery spasm. METHODS: Cardiac autonomic nervous activities were evaluated from the power of the low-frequency and the high-frequency spectral components of heart rate variability with Holter monitoring in 18 patients with nocturnal variant angina. Samples during the first 512 seconds of each 10-minute period from 60 minutes before to immediately before an anginal attack occurring during the night or at dawn (2:00 to 7:00 AM) were analyzed by fast Fourier transformation. RESULTS: The R-R interval duri

[Photo- and videographic determination of the dilatation deficit in differential diagnosis of Horner syndrome].

Physiological anisocoria, a very frequent condition among normal subjects, must be differentiated from Horner's syndrome. Aside from a history including evaluation of older photographs, pharmacological pupil testing with cocaine eye drops has been the "gold standard". Measurement of dilation lag, occurring in Horner's syndrome, is much less common and normal values are missing. Therefore, we evaluated various photographic parameters for testing for the best parameter to discriminate Horner's syndrome (22 patients) from physiological anisocoria (16 patients). Additionally, we tested whether a c

Relationship between density of muscarinic receptors and nasal hypersecretion in a nasal allergic model.

In guinea pigs actively sensitized with ovalbumin, we have observed that nasal hyperreactivity and hypersensitivity to methacholine causes nasal secretion accompanied by an increase in the density of muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (m-ACh.R) following the appearance of nasal symptoms induced by the ovalbumin challenge. Therefore in the present investigation, we studied the relationship between the density of m-ACh.R and nasal hypersecretion in actively sensitized guinea pigs. There was no relationship between the quantity of nasal secretion and serum Ig G1 or Ig E levels. On the other hand,

Immunohistochemical localization of [Met5]enkephalin and [Met5]enkephalin-Arg6-Gly7-Leu8 in sympathetic and parasympathetic neurons and nerve fibers projecting to the rat submandibular gland.

The localization of [Met5]enkephalin, [Met5]enkephalin-Arg6-Gly7-Leu8, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide and tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivities was studied in the submandibular gland of adult Sprague-Dawley and Wistar rats using the indirect immunofluorescence technique. Immunoreactivities for [Met5]enkephalin and [Met5]enkephalin-Arg6-Gly7-Leu8, a proenkephalin A-derived octapeptide, showed identical distributions. A large number of enkephalin-immunoreactive nerve fibers were detected around secretory acini, along intercalated ducts, convoluted granular tubules, intra- and interlobular d

Vagal tone: effects on sensitivity, motility, and inflammation.

The vagus nerve (VN) is a key element of the autonomic nervous system. As a mixed nerve, the VN contributes to the bidirectional interactions between the brain and the gut, i.e., the brain-gut axis. In particular, after integration in the central autonomic network of peripheral sensations such as inflammation and pain via vagal and spinal afferents, an efferent response through modulation of preganglionic parasympathetic neurons of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus and/or preganglionic sympathetic neurons of the spinal cord is able to modulate gastrointestinal nociception, motility, and in

Sudarshan Kriya yogic breathing in the treatment of stress, anxiety, and depression: part I-neurophysiologic model.

Mind-body interventions are beneficial in stress-related mental and physical disorders. Current research is finding associations between emotional disorders and vagal tone as indicated by heart rate variability. A neurophysiologic model of yogic breathing proposes to integrate research on yoga with polyvagal theory, vagal stimulation, hyperventilation, and clinical observations. Yogic breathing is a unique method for balancing the autonomic nervous system and influencing psychologic and stress-related disorders. Many studies demonstrate effects of yogic breathing on brain function and physiolo

Antiseizure medication effects on the autonomic nervous system in pediatric patients with epilepsy.

Patients with epilepsy (PWE) taking antiseizure medications (ASMs) exhibit altered autonomic nervous system (ANS) parameters. ANS signals may monitor ASM applications and effectiveness non-invasively. Due to limited research, we reviewed the effects of ASMs on the pediatric ANS. We followed PRISMA guidelines and searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase for publications until 12/2024. These studies investigated the impact of ASMs on ANS, including heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV), temperature, and sweat. We used Covidence software for screening processes and data extraction. Aft

Slow-Paced Breathing Intervention in Healthcare Workers Affected by Long COVID: Effects on Systemic and Dysfunctional Breathing Symptoms, Manual Dexterity and HRV.

BACKGROUND: Many COVID-19 survivors still experience long-term effects of an acute infection, most often characterised by neurological, cognitive and psychiatric sequelae. The treatment of this condition is challenging, and many hypotheses have been proposed. Non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation using slow-paced breathing (SPB) could stimulate both central nervous system areas and parasympathetic autonomic pathways, leading to neuromodulation and a reduction in inflammation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate physical, cognitive, emotional symptoms, executive functions and autonomic

Autonomic modulation by low-intensity focused ultrasound stimulation of the vagus nerve.

Objective. Our previous study has shown that low-intensity focused ultrasound stimulation (FUS) of the vagus nerve could modulate blood pressure (BP), but its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We hypothesized that low-intensity FUS of the vagus nerve would regulate autonomic function and thus BP.Approach.17 anesthetized spontaneously hypertensive rats were treated with low-intensity FUS of the left vagus nerve for 15 min each trial. Continuous BP, heart rate, respiration rate (RR), and core body temperature were simultaneously recorded to evaluate the effects on BP and other physiological p

Impact of cryoballoon-guided pulmonary vein isolation on non-invasive autonomic tests in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) modulates the intrinsic cardiac autonomic nervous system (ANS). We evaluated the impact of PVI on 5 non-invasive autonomic tests. METHODS: Thirty patients (76% male, mean age 60.37 ± 9.02 years) with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) underwent cryoballoon-guided PVI. Five autonomic tests were performed 24hrs before and after PVI (N = 30) and repeated after 6months (N = 22). Parasympathetic function was measured by heart rate (HR) variability during deep breathing (E/I ratio, I-E difference), Valsalva maneuver (Valsalva-ratio) and head-up tilt test

Cardiovascular Autonomic Dysfunction in Children and Adolescents With Rett Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Autonomic dysfunction is common in children with Rett syndrome. They usually manifest with agitation, persistent screaming, constipation, gastroesophageal reflux, aerophagia, hyperventilation, and breath-holding episodes. Cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction may result in fatal a arrhythmia. Many of these events are mistaken for seizures and treated with antiepileptics. METHODS: The present study was conducted in a tertiary care teaching hospital in north India for more than a six month period. MeCP2 mutation positive, 24 cases with Rett syndrome and 24 age-matched healthy girls w

Pre-operative baroreflex sensitivity and efferent cardiac parasympathetic activity are correlated with post-operative pain.

BACKGROUND: A maladaptation of the autonomic nervous system may been seen in patients with chronic pain that includes persistent changes in the autonomic tone, increased heart rate, and reduced heart rate variability and baroreflex sensitivity. Baroreflex sensitivity and acute pain intensity have been reported to be inversely correlated. However, it is unknown whether the same correlation applies with regard to post-operative pain. In the present study, autonomic function was measured in patients scheduled for minor hand surgery and correlated with early and persistent pain after the procedure
