The prognostic value and staging category of parotid lymph node (PLN) metastasis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remain unknown. We retrospectively reviewed MRI scans and medical records for 1811 NPC patients who received intensity-modulated radiotherapy. The diagnosis of PLN metastasis was mainly based on MRI follow-up. Twenty-five positive PLNs in 21/1811 patients were identified; the incidence of PLN metastasis was 1.2%. PLN metastasis was significantly associated with advanced N-category and stage. Ten of the 21 patients received irradiation of the involved PLNs; the PLN recurrence rate

Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (Ca ex PA) is a carcinoma arising from a primary or recurrent benign pleomorphic adenoma. It often poses a diagnostic challenge to clinicians and pathologists. This study intends to review the literature and highlight the current clinical and molecular perspectives about this entity. The most common clinical presentation of CA ex PA is of a firm mass in the parotid gland. The proportion of adenoma and carcinoma components determines the macroscopic features of this neoplasm. The entity is difficult to diagnose pre-operatively. Pathologic assessment is the gold

OBJECTIVE: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a complex of clinical symptoms defined by burning sensations in the oral cavity without observed oral pathology. Clinically two patient groups within BMS were distinguished, one with burning limited to the anterior tongue (glossopyrosis) and the other with burning in multiple mouth regions, including tongue, lips, palate, gums and cheeks (oropyrosis). Biochemical differences between these two groups could assist in distinguishing them.
DESIGN: Eighty-three patients with BMS, 47 with oropyrosis and 31 with glossopyrosis were studied. Measurements of z

Low-grade mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) type B-cell lymphomas of the salivary gland arise in a background of myoepithelial sialadenitis (MESA), usually in association with Sjögren's syndrome. The distinction between benign MESA and early lymphoma has proved difficult using histological criteria alone and the significance of B-cell monoclonality in this respect is controversial. We have used immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of immunoglobulin heavy-chain VDJ regions to assess clonality in biopsies from 45 patients with lymphoid infiltration of the

Substance P and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) are present in nerve fibers innervating the submandibular gland. Radiotherapy of tumors in the head and neck region usually embraces the salivary glands in the irradiated field and consequently a dramatic decrease in salivary function is seen. In this study, the submandibular glands and ganglia of rats subjected to fractionated irradiation were examined by use of immunohistochemical techniques for demonstration of substance P and CGRP. Irradiation was given on five consecutive days (daily doses of 6-9 Gray) with unilateral or bilateral irr

BACKGROUND: Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is a rare and aggressive malignancy of the salivary glands, most commonly originating in the parotid gland and less frequently in the submandibular gland. Isolated axillary lymph node metastasis is extremely uncommon, and its clinical characteristics and optimal management remain unclear.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old man presented with a painless swelling in the left submandibular region. Imaging revealed a submandibular mass with ipsilateral cervical and axillary lymphadenopathy, without distant metastasis. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNA cy

OBJECTIVES: Secretory Carcinoma is a malignant salivary gland tumor, initially described in 2010. This rare tumor is associated with the translocation t(12;15) (p13;q25), resulting in the fusion gene ETV6-NTRK3. Since this tumor is quite rare, most publications describe only small cohorts of patients. We aimed to investigate the clinical, pathological, and prognostic features of this newly defined malignant entity.
DATA SOURCES: Pubmed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science databases.
REVIEW METHODS: All published articles between 2010 and 2023 were reviewed. Search terms included the terms "Ma

INTRODUCTION: The use of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) in head and neck cancers has allowed for selective sparing of low-risk or uninvolved lymph nodes. In oropharyngeal cancers, the benefits and risks of omitting contralateral retropharyngeal lymph nodes (RPLN) remain uncertain. This study examines the outcomes of elective coverage of contralateral RPLN in oropharyngeal cancer treated with definitive IMRT.
METHODS: We analyzed 54 patients with newly diagnosed unilateral tonsil or base of tongue squamous cell carcinoma with at most unilateral neck involvement (cN0-N2b) and no R

Autologous fat grafting is widely used for secondary contour refinement following head and neck reconstruction and is generally considered safe. However, irradiated reconstructed tissues exhibit fibrosis and reduced compliance, potentially predisposing patients to uncommon complications. Transient facial nerve paralysis following fat grafting has not previously been reported in an irradiated anterolateral thigh (ALT) free flap. A 57-year-old man underwent extensive oncologic resection for verrucous squamous cell carcinoma involving the temporal bone and parotid region, followed by ALT free fla…

In India, the majority of mumps virus (MuV) cases are underreported, and a significant proportion of cases do not exhibit classic symptoms, such as swelling of the parotid glands. Although MuV infection is a vaccine-preventable illness, the genomic characterisation of currently circulating strains in various parts of the country is essential to understand the molecular epidemiology and vaccine coverage. The present study was designed to identify the genotypes and genetic variations within the small hydrophobic (SH) gene of MuV circulating in Kerala, India, from October 2024 to February 2025. V

BACKGROUND: The deteriorated image quality of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) reduces the accuracy of contour propagation. We investigated the accuracy of contour propagation from planning CT (pCT) to iterative CBCT (iCBCT) using deformable image registration and compared it with that of replanning CT (reCT) and Feldkamp-Davis-Kress algorithm-based CBCT (FDK-CBCT). No report exists regarding iCBCT improving the accuracy of this technique for images of the head and neck region.
METHODS: We included 29 patients who underwent radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. ReCT and CBCT were perform

INTRODUCTION: Mammary analogue secretory carcinoma (MASC) of the salivary gland was first described by Skálová et al. in 2010. It is often associated with a translocation, t(12;15)(p13;q25), which results in the fusion gene ETV6-NTRK3. Major salivary glands, primarily the parotid gland, are involved in 70 % of cases of MASC, while small salivary glands are involved in less than 25 % of cases. This report aims to consolidate in unveiling, diagnosing, and managing the rarity of MASC in the minor salivary gland and its existing knowledge and encourage new research on this increasingly important s

Primary head and neck hematolymphoid neoplasms (PHNHLN) are defined as a series of hematolymphoid system-derived neoplasms which primarily emanate in head and neck region. Due to the rarity and absence of symptomatic specificity, PHNHLN is easily neglected. The objective of this study is to investigate demographics, pathological subtype distribution, anatomical location, survival outcomes and prognostic factors of PHNHLN among older patients aged ≥ 60. The individual patient information in our study was derived from Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database. Descriptive epidemiologic

CONTEXT: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a complex disorder combining hypothalamic dysfunction, neurodevelopmental delay, hypotonia, and hyperphagia with risk of obesity and its complications. PWS is caused by the loss of expression of the PWS critical region, a cluster of paternally expressed genes on chromosome 15q11.2-q13. As life expectancy of patients with PWS increases, age-related diseases like malignancies might pose a new threat to health.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence and risk factors of malignancies in patients with PWS and to provide clinical recommendations for cancer s
