Nightmare experience and family relationships in healthy volunteers and nightmare disorder patients.

BACKGROUND: Nightmares are associated with parental bonding styles and various psychiatric disorders, but the exact connections between different nightmare experience features and family relationships in healthy volunteers and nightmare disorder patients are still unclear. METHODS: We therefore invited 62 nightmare disorder patients and 135 healthy volunteers to undergo tests of the Nightmare Experience Questionnaire (NEQ), the Family Relationship Questionnaire (FRQ), and the Plutchik - van Praag Depression Inventory (PVP). RESULTS: Besides the higher nightmare frequency and the higher PVP a

Parental Warmth and Hostility and Child Executive Function Problems: A Longitudinal Study of Chinese Families.

This study examined the longitudinal associations of maternal and paternal warmth and hostility with child executive function problems. Data were collected for two consecutive years from 333 kindergarten children who resided in Hong Kong, China, as well as their mothers, fathers, and class teachers. At Time 1, the average age of children was 57.73 months, and 56% of them were girls. At Time 1, mothers and fathers rated their own parenting practices with their children. At Times 1 and 2, class teachers rated children's problems in three aspects of executive functions, including updating/working

Dietary Intake of Octanoic Acid Restores UBE3A Expression and Improves the Behavioral Phenotypes in a Mouse Model of Angelman Syndrome.

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder with no effective therapies. Most of the behavioral deficits observed in AS patients arise from the absence of ubiquitin protein ligase E3A (UBE3A) in the brain during development, driven by the loss of maternally expressed UBE3A and silencing of the paternal copy of this gene through imprinting. Safe and effective therapies aiming at restoring the expression of the paternal UBE3A gene early in human life are currently lacking. In this study, we investigated whether octanoic acid (OA), a medium-chain fatty acid, could unsilence the

Parental Separation and Offspring Alcohol Involvement: Findings from Offspring of Alcoholic and Drug Dependent Twin Fathers.

BACKGROUND: We examined associations between parental separation during childhood and offspring alcohol involvement, adjusting for genetic and environmental risks specific to parental alcohol (AD) and cannabis/other illicit drug dependence (DD). METHODS: The sample consisted of 1,828 offspring of male twins from the Vietnam Era Twin (VET) Registry, who completed a telephone diagnostic interview. Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were conducted predicting onset of first use, transition from first use to first AD symptom, and transition from first use to AD diagnosis from paternal an

Non-invasive prenatal diagnostic testing for β-thalassaemia using cell-free fetal DNA and next generation sequencing.

OBJECTIVE: To develop an accurate non-invasive prenatal test using next generation sequencing (NGS) for HbE and the four most common β-thalassaemia mutations found in South East Asia (namely -28A > G, CD17A > T, CD41/42(-TTCT) and IVS-II-654C > T). METHODS: Cell-free DNA was extracted from maternal plasma from 83 families where both parents were carriers of the HbE mutation or one of four common β-thalassaemia mutations. Overlapping PCR amplicons covering each mutation were generated, pooled and sequenced using the Illumina MiSeq. Fastq files were analysed to detect inheritance of the paterna

Frequency and parental origin of de novo APC mutations in familial adenomatous polyposis.

A predominance of de novo mutations in the paternal germ line has been reported for several disorders; however, in familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), the parental origin of APC mutations has been scarcely analysed so far. Among 563 unrelated FAP families with known family history, we identified 58 patients with a suspected de novo mutation in the APC gene. A germline mutation was detected in 52 of them; in 38 patients, the mutation could be excluded in both parents. The five base pair deletion at codon 1309 (c.3927_3931delAAAGA) was over-represented in the group of patients with suspected d

Parental origin and phenotype of triploidy in spontaneous abortions: predominance of diandry and association with the partial hydatidiform mole.

The origin of human triploidy is controversial. Early cytogenetic studies found the majority of cases to be paternal in origin; however, recent molecular analyses have challenged these findings, suggesting that digynic triploidy is the most common source of triploidy. To resolve this dispute, we examined 91 cases of human triploid spontaneous abortions to (1) determine the mechanism of origin of the additional haploid set, and (2) assess the effect of origin on the phenotype of the conceptus. Our results indicate that the majority of cases were diandric in origin because of dispermy, whereas t

Involvement of IGF2 and H19 imprinting in choriocarcinoma development.

Complete hydatidiform mole is an abnormal pregnancy characterized by grossly swollen villi in the absence of a fetus (Kajii and Ohama 1997, Wake et al., 1978, Jacobs et al., 1980). It is well known that this abnormal pregnancy product is androgenetic in origin. The entire genome of the molar conceptus is paternally derived. The majority of moles result from fertilization of an empty egg by haploid sperm. The paternally derived haploid set then duplicated without cytokinesis and restores diploidy. Invariably, this class of moles has a 46, XX karyotype and is completely homozygous for genetic ma

Mothering versus fathering? Positive parenting versus negative parenting? Their relative importance in predicting adolescent aggressive behavior: A longitudinal comparison.

To understand whose parenting (mothers vs. fathers) and which type of parenting (warmth vs. hostility) is more important in predicting adolescent aggression, this study applied dominance analysis to evaluate the relative importance of four different parenting dimensions (maternal hostility, paternal hostility, maternal warmth, and paternal warmth). Four waves of adolescent-reported longitudinal data from the PROSPER project (N = 626, 52% adolescent girls, 89% White rural, age 12 to 15) were used to investigate longitudinal change in the relative importance of these dimensions over time. Nicotine exposure of male mice protects offspring against carbon tetrachloride-induced acute liver injury.

Paternal nicotine exposure can cause a phenotypic change in offspring. To study whether paternal nicotine exposure influences acute liver injury and repair of the offspring, we established a paternal nicotine exposure model in mice and treated the offspring mice with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4 ) to induce acute liver injury. After the treatment of CCl4 , the levels of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase in offspring serum of paternal nicotine exposed mice are about 37.44%, and 30.21% lower than the control mice, respectively. The interplay among preschool child and family factors and the development of ODD symptoms.

The present study examined (a) the interactions between early behavior, early parenting, and early family adversity in predicting later oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms, and (b) the reciprocal relations between parent functioning and ODD symptoms across the preschool years. Participants were 258 three-year-old children (138 boys, 120 girls) and their parents from diverse backgrounds who participated in a 4-year longitudinal study. Early child behavior, parenting, and family adversity did not significantly interact in the predicted direction. Reciprocal relations between ODD symptom

Different Miscarriage Rate and Birthweights After In Vitro Fertilization versus Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection Embryo Transfer in Couples With Male Hepatitis B Virus Infection: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: The influence of paternal Hepatitis B virus infection on reproductive outcomes after in vitro fertilization or intracytoplasmic sperm injection is still debated. While differences in sperm-oocyte interaction duration and intensity between in vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection may lead to divergent viral exposure effects. Nevertheless, research specifically examining these differences remains limited. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate how various insemination techniques influence the effects of paternal Hepatitis B virus infection on reproductive outcomes in couples dur

Coincubation of sperm with epididymal extracellular vesicle preparations from chronic intermittent ethanol-treated mice is sufficient to impart anxiety-like and ethanol-induced behaviors to adult progeny.

We previously reported that paternal preconception chronic ethanol exposure in mice imparts adult male offspring with reduced ethanol drinking preference and consumption, increased ethanol sensitivity, and attenuated stress responsivity. That same chronic ethanol exposure paradigm was later revealed to affect the sperm epigenome by altering the abundance of several small noncoding RNAs, a mechanism that mediates the intergenerational effects of numerous paternal environmental exposures. Although recent studies have revealed that the unique RNA signature of sperm is shaped during maturation in

Postnatal establishment of allelic Gαs silencing as a plausible explanation for delayed onset of parathyroid hormone resistance owing to heterozygous Gαs disruption.

Pseudohypoparathyroidism type-Ia (PHP-Ia), characterized by renal proximal tubular resistance to parathyroid hormone (PTH), results from maternal mutations of GNAS that lead to loss of α-subunit of the stimulatory G protein (Gαs) activity. Gαs expression is paternally silenced in the renal proximal tubule, and this genomic event is critical for the development of PTH resistance, as patients display impaired hormone action only if the mutation is inherited maternally. The primary clinical finding of PHP-Ia is hypocalcemia, which can lead to various neuromuscular defects including seizures. PHP-

Effects of gender and family history of alcohol dependence on a behavioral task of impulsivity in healthy subjects.

OBJECTIVE: Substance misusers are often considered impulsive, but it is unclear whether impulsivity precedes substance misuse or develops as a consequence of it. Because alcohol dependence has a clear familial component, a study comparing impulsivity in nonaffected individuals who differ with respect to paternal history of alcohol dependence may provide evidence of familial vulnerability to impulsivity. METHOD: 122 healthy individuals participated, none of whom misused alcohol or drugs; 58 were paternal history positive (PHP) and 64 were paternal history negative (PHN) for alcohol dependence.

Genetic origin and forensic analysis of han populations from four districts in Shanghai, China, based on Y-chromosome STR and SNP markers.

Y-short tandem repeats (STRs) and Y-single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on the Y chromosome are genetic markers unique to men. They are widely used in identification, forensic medicine and paternal lineage tracing. Because of their strict paternal genetic characteristics, they have become a powerful means to trace the evolution of paternal lineages and populations. In this study, 38 Y-STR loci and 250 Y-SNP loci were genotyped, and a dataset was constructed for Qingpu Han (n = 396), Songjiang Han (n = 386), Jinshan Han (n = 384), and Fengxian Han (n = 372) populations in Shanghai.
