Lesions of the dorsal subiculum and the dorsal hippocampus impaired pattern separation in a task using distinct and overlapping visual stimuli.

The contribution of the dorsal subiculum (DS) and of the dorsal hippocampus (DH) to memory for distinct and overlapping visual stimuli was examined. Rats with selective lesions of the DS or the DH were compared to sham-operated rats on a delayed matching-to-place task guided by distal visual cues in a modified radial-arm maze. Overlapping distal visual cues could be perceived from three arm entrances (adjacent arms) and a unique set of distal cues were more likely to be seen from the other two arm entrances (distinct arms). Rats with DS lesions were impaired on trials with baited adjacent arms

Attentional bias for emotional faces in children with generalized anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To examine attentional bias for angry and happy faces in 7- to 12-year-old children with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD; n = 23) and nonanxious controls (n = 25). METHOD: Children completed a visual probe task in which pairs of face stimuli were displayed for 500 milliseconds and were replaced by a visual probe in the spatial location of one of the faces. RESULTS: Severely anxious children with GAD showed an attentional bias toward both angry and happy faces. Children with GAD with a milder level of anxiety and nonanxious controls did not show an attentional bias toward emotion

Impaired tuning of a fast occipito-temporal response for print in dyslexic children learning to read.

Developmental dyslexia is defined as a disorder of learning to read. It is thus critical to examine the neural processes that impair learning to read during the early phase of reading acquisition, before compensatory mechanisms are adapted by older readers with dyslexia. Using electroencephalography-based event-related imaging, we investigated how tuning of visual activity for print advances in the same children before and after initial reading training in school. The focus was on a fast, coarse form of visual tuning for print, measured as an increase of the occipito-temporal N1 response at 15

Selective category and modality effects in deep dyslexia.

We report a patient (FBI) in whom a category specific deep dyslexia was demonstrated. The patient was globally dysphasic with dyslexia and dysgraphia, and his dyslexic syndrome was characterised by a dramatic loss of phonological processing together with a partial loss of whole word reading. In the context of an overall poor level of reading accuracy, concrete words were read better than abstract words. Within this concrete word vocabulary, living items were read more accurately that non-living items. Perhaps most strikingly, he also had a remarkably preserved written proper noun vocabulary. A

Location and spatial profile of category-specific regions in human extrastriate cortex.

Subjects were scanned in a single functional MRI (fMRI) experiment that enabled us to localize cortical regions in each subject in the occipital and temporal lobes that responded significantly in a variety of contrasts: faces>objects, body parts>objects, scenes>objects, objects>scrambled objects, and moving>stationary stimuli. The resulting activation maps were co-registered across subjects using spherical surface coordinates [Fischl et al., Hum Brain Mapp 1999;8:272-284] to produce a "percentage overlap map" indicating the percentage of subjects who showed a significant response for each cont

Naming speed and visual search deficits in readers with disabilities: evidence from an orthographically regular language (Italian).

The study examined rapid automatized naming (RAN) in 42 children with reading disabilities and 101 control children-all native speakers of Italian, a language with shallow orthography. Third-, 5th- and 6th-grade children were given a RAN test that required rapid naming of color, object, or digit matrices. A visual search test using the same stimulus material (but not requiring a verbal response) and an oral articulation test were also given. Readers with disabilities performed worse than controls on the RAN test. This effect was larger in higher grades than in lower ones. Readers with disabili

Second to fourth digit ratio and face shape.

The average human male face differs from the average female face in size and shape of the jaws, cheek-bones, lips, eyes and nose. It is possible that this dimorphism is determined by sex steroids such as testosterone (T) and oestrogen (E), and several studies on the perception of such characteristics have been based on this assumption, but those studies focussed mainly on the relationship of male faces with circulating hormone levels; the corresponding biology of the female face remains mainly speculative. This paper is concerned with the relative importance of prenatal T and E levels (assesse

The role of sensory-motor information in object recognition: evidence from category-specific visual agnosia.

The role of sensory-motor representations in object recognition was investigated in experiments involving AD, a patient with mild visual agnosia who was impaired in the recognition of visually presented living as compared to non-living entities. AD named visually presented items for which sensory-motor information was available significantly more reliably than items for which such information was not available; this was true when all items were non-living. Naming of objects from their associated sound was normal. These data suggest that both information about object form computed in the ventra

"I can write seven but I can't say it": a case of domain-specific phonological output deficit for numbers.

While it is established that numbers represent a category-specific semantic domain being dissociable from other semantic domains, it is a debated issue whether the category-specific dissociability persists at a level of lexical processing or whether words and number words are processed by the same lexical mechanisms. In most of the documented cases of brain damage, lexical processing of words and number words was equally spared or impaired. Here, we describe the case of a patient who after recovering from his naming disorders, showed a selective deficit in the spoken production of numbers with

Naming difficulties in children with dyslexia: application of the tip-of-the-tongue paradigm.

The present study used the tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) experimental paradigm in a picture naming task to explore the source of the naming deficits of children with dyslexia. Compared with a control group of typically developing readers, the children with dyslexia showed fewer correct responses and spontaneous recalls, more don't know (DK) and TOT responses, and less accurate feeling of knowing (FOK) judgments. When they failed to retrieve a target word, the children with dyslexia did not differ from the control group in the partial semantic information they provided, but they gave less valid and m

Executive functioning in adults and children with developmental dyslexia.

The performance of developmentally dyslexic children and adults was studied upon a range of tasks that involved executive functioning. Both adult and child samples of dyslexics were found to under-perform on the group-embedded figures test. This test required the identification of constituent parts from within complex visual arrays, with good performance necessitating the inhibition of the processing of the surrounding context. A general deficit on visual-spatial tasks was eliminated as an explanation as dyslexics performed normally upon a range of other non-verbal assessments. The dyslexics c

Pattern reversal electroretinograms in patients with unilateral idiopathic full thickness macular holes.

PURPOSE: To discover the effect of detachment of the posterior vitreous cortex on pattern electroretinogram (PERG) P50 amplitudes in the uninvolved fellow eyes (FE) of patients with macular holes (MH), and to determine the prognostic value of the PERG in identifying the FE of patients with MH that could be at risk for the development of a MH. METHODS: PERGs were recorded using 12' and 46' checkboard stimulus reversing at 5 Hz in 18 patients selected from a cohort of 37 patients with unilateral idiopathic full thickness MH, and in age-matched controls (AMC). Contact lens biomicroscopy with a G

Reinforcer frequency and restricted stimulus control.

Stimulus control was evaluated in 3 individuals with moderate to severe mental retardation by delayed identity matching-to-sample procedures that presented either one or two discrete forms as sample stimuli on each trial. On pretests, accuracy scores on one-sample trials were uniformly high. On two-sample trials, the correct stimulus (i.e., the one that subsequently appeared in the comparison array) varied unpredictably, and accuracy scores were substantially lower, suggesting that both sample stimuli did not exert stimulus control on every trial. Subjects were then given training sessions wit

[Experimental study of response latency of visual search processes and premotor decision latency in dyslexic and non-dyslexic children. Model of linear regression: derived parametric estimates].

BACKGROUND: For some time the question of a visual impairment in dyslexic children has been a source of controversy in the literature. Depending on the method used, the findings point either to receptor or neural impairment or to a visual deficit in information processing. The question remains of whether these findings mask retardation in the motor planning and execution of a response. METHOD: In this investigation 61 children (15 dyslexic boys and 15 dyslexic girls aged 8 years 0 months to 10 years 8 months and 16 non-dyslexic boys and 15 non-dyslexic girls aged 8 years 0 months to 10 years

Generalized identity matching of two-dimensional forms by individuals with moderate to profound mental retardation.

The classic literature suggests that individuals with MAs of less than 5 years may fail tasks that require same/different judgments. In Study 1 we used an assessment procedure that provided minimal instructional programming to determine whether 17 adults with MAs ranging from 2 years, 5 months to 4 years, 11 months would show accurate identity matching-to-sample. Stimuli were letter-like nonsense forms. Eight participants showed highly accurate matching. Eight of the 9 who failed were available for further study. Of these, 5 ultimately demonstrated highly accurate matching after training with

The perception of lightness in 3-D curved objects.

Lightness constancy in complex scenes requires that the visual system take account of information concerning variations of illumination falling on visible surfaces. Three experiments on the perception of lightness for three-dimensional (3-D) curved objects show that human observers are better able to perform this accounting for certain scenes than for others. The experiments investigate the effect of object curvature, illumination direction, and object shape on lightness perception. Lightness constancy was quite good when a rich local gray-level context was provided. Deviations occurred when b

Semantic and phonological coding in poor and normal readers.

Three studies were conducted evaluating semantic and phonological coding deficits as alternative explanations of reading disability. In the first study, poor and normal readers in second and sixth grade were compared on various tests evaluating semantic development as well as on tests evaluating rapid naming and pseudoword decoding as independent measures of phonological coding ability. In a second study, the same subjects were given verbal memory and visual-verbal learning tasks using high and low meaning words as verbal stimuli and Chinese ideographs as visual stimuli. On the semantic tasks,

Refractory semantics in global aphasia: on semantic organisation and the access-storage distinction in neuropsychology.

A single case study is reported of a global aphasic patient, JM, with impaired access to semantic information which was particularly severe for the class of proper names. JM's ability to perform matching tasks with printed words and pictures to auditory words deteriorated when items were repeated, especially when the response-stimulus interval was short. Performance was also inconsistent across items. The effect of repeated testing on items generalised to other, previously untested members of the same category. Despite this, JM was able to access general semantic information about stimuli from
