"I would walk through fire to get this vaccine": a mixed-methods study examining attitudes and perceptions of a gonorrhoea vaccine programme among UK sexual health service users.

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial-resistant gonorrhoea poses a significant global public health threat. In response, the UK launched the world's first gonorrhoea vaccination programme using a 4CMenB vaccine, targeting individuals at high risk of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Understanding attitudes and acceptability among sexual health service users is essential to inform successful implementation. METHODS: The NAVIGATE study employed a mixed-methods design, combining an online survey (n=395) with semi-structured interviews (n=15) among UK adults who had previously accessed sexu

Adjustment to the learning environment among university students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

BACKGROUND: Ensuring students who are deaf/Deaf (d/Deaf) or hard of hearing (d/DHH) have access to higher education goes beyond legal compliance but reflects an institution's commitment to creating educational environments where all learners can fully participate and develop. OBJECTIVES: This study explored instructional, psychosocial, and environmental factors influencing adjustment to the learning environment among d/DHH students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). METHOD: A qualitative design was employed, with semi-structured interviews conducted with 10 purposively sampled d/DHH

The effect of non-neovascular age-related macular degeneration on face recognition performance.

PURPOSE: There is a well-established research base surrounding face recognition in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). However, much of this existing research does not differentiate between results obtained for 'wet' AMD and 'dry' AMD. Here, we test the hypothesis that face recognition performance is worse in patients with dry AMD compared with visually healthy peers. METHODS: Patients (>60 years of age, logMAR binocular visual acuity 0.7 or better) with dry AMD of varying severity and visually healthy age-related peers (controls) completed a modified version of the Cambridg

The Effect of Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Cytomegalovirus Infection on Infant Responses to Vaccines: A Review.

The success of prevention of mother to child transmission programs over the last two decades has led to an increasing number of infants who are exposed to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), but who are not themselves infected (HIV-exposed, uninfected infants). Although the morbidity and mortality among HIV-exposed, uninfected infants is considerably lower than that among HIV-infected infants, they may remain at increased risk of infections in the first 2 years of life compared with their HIV-unexposed peers, especially in the absence of breastfeeding. There is some evidence of immunological d

Altered neural response to rejection-related words in children exposed to maltreatment.

BACKGROUND: Children exposed to maltreatment show neural sensitivity to facial cues signalling threat. However, little is known about how maltreatment influences the processing of social threat cues more broadly, and whether atypical processing of social threat cues relates to psychiatric risk. METHODS: Forty-one 10- to 14-year-old children underwent a social rejection-themed emotional Stroop task during functional magnetic resonance imaging: 21 children with a documented history of maltreatment (11 F) and 19 comparison children with no maltreatment history (11 F). Groups were matched on age,

Personality, perceived environment, and behavior systems related to future smoking intentions among youths: an application of problem-behavior theory in Shanghai, China.

BACKGROUND: Smoking among youths is a worldwide problem, particularly in China. Many endogenous and environmental factors influence smokers' intentions to smoke; therefore, a comprehensive model is needed to understand the significance and relationship of predictors. This study aimed to develop a prediction model based on problem-behavior theory (PBT) to interpret intentions to smoke among Chinese youths. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 26,675 adolescents from junior, senior, and vocational high schools in Shanghai, China. Data on smoking status, smoking knowledge, attitude t

Exploring Shared and Unique Factors Linked to Adolescent Mental Health and Well-Being in a National Survey of 11-16 Year Olds in Wales.

PURPOSE: Mental health (MH) and mental well-being (WB) are related but distinct, potentially shaped by shared or unique factors. Understanding how influences like bullying, body image, and peer support affect each can guide more targeted interventions. METHODS: The School Health Research Network includes 176,603 pupils from 196 secondary schools in Wales (94% coverage of all schools). Biannual pupil health survey data were used to explore the relationship between MH (i.e., Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire Total Difficulties) and WB (i.e., Short Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale

Cardiac vagal recovery following acute psychological stress in human adults: A scoping review.

Vagally mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV) recovery following acute psychological stress reflects parasympathetic function and stress resilience, yet there is no synthesis on how it is measured and influenced by key factors. This scoping review mapped methodologies used to assess vmHRV recovery and examined clinical, demographic, psychological, physiological and environmental influences. Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, a comprehensive search of MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and EMBASE databases identified empirical peer-reviewed studies on cardiac vagal recovery in adults published since 2000 that

Developing a machine learning algorithm to predict probability of retear and functional outcomes in patients undergoing rotator cuff repair surgery: protocol for a retrospective, multicentre study.

INTRODUCTION: The effectiveness of rotator cuff tear repair surgery is influenced by multiple patient-related, pathology-centred and technical factors, which is thought to contribute to the reported retear rates between 17% and 94%. Adequate patient selection is thought to be essential in reaching satisfactory results. However, no clear consensus has been reached on which factors are most predictive of successful surgery. A clinical decision tool that encompassed all aspects is still to be made. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning algorithms use complex self-learning models that

Artificial intelligence-enabled social robots for facilitating social interactions in patients with dementia: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The global rise in dementia, closely linked to aging populations, necessitates innovative interventions to address care challenges. Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Social Robots (AI-ESRs) present a promising approach by leveraging multi-modal communication to enhance social engagement and alleviate isolation. However, evidence regarding their efficacy remains inconsistent and fragmented. This systematic review evaluates the effectiveness of AI-ESRs in enhancing social interactions among people with dementia, examines factors contributing to outcome variability, and provides recomme

Experiences and actions taken by women to address delayed conception in Delhi, India: A qualitative study.

One in six people experiences infertility in their lifetime globally, including India. Understanding experiences and actions taken by people with delayed conception requires developing person-centred fertility care interventions. We applied the theory of planned behaviour to explore the experiences and actions of women in couples that failed to conceive in low to lower middle-income neighbourhoods of Delhi, India. This was a qualitative study among 35 women who had failed to conceive after 18 months. Data were collected between February and July 2021 through focus group discussions. Deductive

Motivators for help-seeking among people with opioid use disorder: An interpretative phenomenological analysis.

INTRODUCTION: A substantial proportion of individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) never engage with specialist substance use treatment, despite strong evidence that treatment participation reduces overdose and mortality risk. Understanding the subjective experiences that drive or inhibit help-seeking may inform approaches that increase service engagement. METHODS: Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with six men currently attending a community drug treatment service in Bristol, UK. Interviews explored lived experiences of

Influence of Semantic Richness on Word Form Learning in Children With Developmental Language Disorder.

PURPOSE: Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) show a word form learning deficit, characterized by inaccurate and variable productions of novel words. We investigated whether, when a novel word form is introduced, incremental exposure to either a sparse visual referent or a relatively semantically rich story influences the phonetic accuracy and the phonological and articulatory variability of production in children with DLD and their typically developing (TD) peers. METHOD: Thirty-six preschoolers (18 DLD, 18 TD) aged 4;1-5;11 (years;months) were exposed to six novel words, two

Impact of COVID-19-induced psychological distress on sexual quality of life and care delivery among healthcare workers: a scoping review protocol of global evidence.

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 pandemic affected physical, psychological and social well-being of many individuals, including healthcare workers, who were at the forefront of the pandemic. Thus, the pandemic may have reduced the sexual quality of life of frontline healthcare workers, which in turn could compromise their ability to provide quality healthcare to patients. This scoping review aims to gather and synthesise current available global evidence on the interactions among COVID-19, sexual quality of life and healthcare delivery among healthcare workers. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The JBI framework f

Navigating the decision landscape: understanding interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome patients' motivations and medical support needs for fecal microbiota transplantation: a qualitative research.

BACKGROUND: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) patients often confront limited treatment options, leading them to contemplate fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) as an alternative therapy. Recognizing the factors influencing their decision-making process and their medical support needs is imperative. This study aimed to investigate the determinants of decision-making and the medical support requirements of IC/BPS patients considering FMT as an alternative treatment. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 IC patients to explore their motivations for cho

The development and validation of the pain-related stigma scale for adolescents (PReSS-A) with chronic pain.

Adolescents with chronic pain often feel stigmatized by their pain condition. Despite the frequency of stigma in this population, few measures exist to assess pain-related stigma in youth with chronic pain. This study reports on the development and validation of the self-report Pain-related Stigma Scale for Adolescents (PReSS-A). The PReSS-A was designed to assess several dimensions of pain-related stigma (felt stigma, peer stigmatization, internalized stigma, and anticipatory stigma/concealment), and to assess stigma across multiple interpersonal relationships. Reliability, construct validity

Cultural adaptation of clinic-based pediatric hiv status disclosure intervention with task shifting in Eastern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: HIV status disclosure remains a major challenge among children living with perinatally acquired HIV with many taking treatment up to adolescence without knowing their serostatus. This non-disclosure is influenced by factors like fear of the negative consequences of disclosure. Since HIV status disclosure has been found to have good effects including improving treatment adherence and better mental health outcomes, there is a need to design interventions aimed at improving disclosure rates among children living with HIV. This study aims at adapting a clinic-based pediatric HIV status
