Twenty patients with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome who were undergoing surgery were studied prospectively to assess the efficacy and safety of IV omeprazole. During the preoperative period, in 19 of 20 patients, omeprazole 60 mg administered as an IV bolus every 12 hours inhibited acid output to less than 5 mEq/h measured in the last hour before the next dose of drug. BACKGROUND: Postprandial stationary pH monitoring studies have identified the acid pocket. To what extent a similar pool of acid is present in the fasting state or at night remains however unclear.
METHODS: The study was performed in 9 HV without a hiatal hernia. A pH-impedance-pressure catheter was positioned at the Z-line. First, the presence of the acid pocket was monitored under stationary conditions during 2 hours after ingestion of a standardized meal. Thereafter, the equipment was connected to an ambulatory monitoring device for 24-hour recording.

Preincubation of the immature rat uterus under physiological conditions was found to increase its subsequent ability to transport alpha-aminoisobutyric acid, l-proline, l-alanine and 1-aminocyclopentanecarboxylic acid. Retinoic acid is a widely used drug in the treatment of cystic acne. It has teratogenic effects that depend on the gestational period in which it is used. We report a seven months old female whose mother was exposed to retinoic acid in both pre-gestational and gestational periods. She had a retardation of psychomotor development and a brain MRI showed frontal atrophy and a malformation of the posterior fossa. We discuss the mechanisms of the teratogenic effects of retinoic acid.
