INTRODUCTION: The Kocuria genus, encompassing gram-positive coccoid actinobacteria belonging to the Micrococcaceae family, has recently been discovered residing on the human skin and oral flora. Reports of Kocuria-associated infections in humans have been scarce. Herein, we present the first case of relapsing peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis caused by Kocuria rhizophila.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient, a 78-year-old male, presented with turbid effluent PD fluid, accompanied by an elevated white blood cell count of 253 cells/μL, of which 59% were neutrophils. A diagnosis of PD-a…

BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery and chemotherapy reportedly improve the prognosis of patients with metachronous peritoneal metastases. However, the types of peritoneal metastases indicated for cytoreductive surgery remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to clarify the category of cases for which cytoreductive surgery would be effective and report the prognosis associated with cytoreductive surgery for metachronous peritoneal metastases.
METHODS: This study included 52 consecutive patients who underwent cytoreductive surgery for metachronous peritoneal metastases caused by colorectal cancer be

OBJECTIVE: To validate an association between new inflammation and frequent peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis (PDAP).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In China, retrospective clinical data were collected on 208 patients who received continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) between 2010 and 2021. The patients were divided into two groups: non-frequent PDAP (the interval between two peritonitis episodes of more than one year) and frequent PDAP (the interval between two peritonitis episodes of less than one year). Patients with their first episode of peritonitis had their age, gender, his…

A nine-year-old male with trisomy 21, end-stage renal disease (ESRD) due to reflux nephropathy presented with suspected peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter-associated peritonitis. One week after receiving an intraperitoneal antibiotic, he presented again with persistent peritonitis symptoms and bloody PD fluid. He underwent exploratory laparotomy, abdominal washout, and PD catheter removal. Mycobacterium abscessus (M. abscessus) was found in the intraoperative peritoneal fluid culture. After the catheter removal, the child's symptoms significantly improved without antimicrobial medications. He w…

OBJECTIVES: Low plasma folate levels have been reported in patients undergoing hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis (PD) in clinical studies. However, folate transport has never been mentioned as a factor contributing to low plasma folate levels in patients undergoing PD. The peritoneal equilibrium test (PET) assesses the plasma creatinine level and glucose transport abilities. This study aimed to evaluate the association between plasma folate levels and folate transport during PD based on PET grades.
METHODS: This study recruited 50 patients who underwent PD for ≥3 months and were categorize

Peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis is a serious complication of PD, and its prevention and treatment are important for reducing patient morbidity and mortality. Reports of PD-associated peritonitis caused by Corynebacterium spp. are limited, and PD-associated peritonitis caused by Corynebacterium striatum (C. striatum) is rare. Only two case reports are available, wherein improvement was only achieved after intraperitoneal administration of antibiotics. Here, we report a case of relapsing PD-associated peritonitis caused by C. striatum that did not improve with antibiotic therapy.…

BACKGROUND: Intraperitoneal (IP) aminoglycosides (AGs) continue to be the cornerstone of empiric management of peritonitis. AG dosing during automated peritoneal dialysis (APD), however, has not been well studied in patients with peritonitis. We sought to identify differences in AG exposure in the peritoneum and plasma for two different dosing regimens with little supporting evidence in patients on APD with peritonitis.
METHODS: A retrospective design that utilised the peritoneal and plasma concentration-time data from a prior study of 18 continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patie…

One of the most common causes of peritoneal dialysis withdrawal is ultrafiltration failure which is characterized by peritoneal membrane thickening and fibrosis. Although previous studies have demonstrated the inhibitory effect of p38 MAPK inhibitors on peritoneal fibrosis in mice, it was unclear which specific cells contribute to peritoneal fibrosis. To investigate the role of p38 MAPK in peritoneal fibrosis more precisely, we examined the expression of p38 MAPK in human peritoneum and generated systemic inducible p38 MAPK knockout mice and macrophage-specific p38 MAPK knockout mice. Furtherm

BACKGROUND: Cat ownership is common in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, even with recent guidelines recommending avoiding domestic animals during PD exchanges to limit the risk of peritonitis due to pet contamination. We analysed the outcomes of patients who experienced cat-related peritonitis compared with those who experienced peritonitis due to other causes.
METHODS: This retrospective study based on the Registre de Dialyse Peritoneale de Langue Française data analysed the outcomes of 52 patients experiencing cat-related peritonitis from the beginning of the database (1986) until 21 June…

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal metastasis is one of the main causes of death in patients with gastric cancer (GC). Galectin-1 regulates various undesirable biological behaviors in GC and may be key in GC peritoneal metastasis.
METHODS: In this study, we elucidated the regulatory role of galectin-1 in GC cell peritoneal metastasis. GC and peritoneal tissues underwent hematoxylin-eosin (HE), immunohistochemical (IHC), and Masson trichrome staining to analyze the difference in galectin-1 expression and peritoneal collagen deposition in different GC clinical stages. The regulatory role of galectin-1 in G

Peritonitis and the resulting peritoneal injuries are common problems that prevent long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD) therapy in patients with end-stage kidney diseases. Previously, we have analyzed the relationship between the complement system and progression of peritoneal injuries associated with PD, particularly focusing on the early activation pathways and effects of the anaphylatoxins. We here utilized a novel mAb 2H2 that blocks assembly of the membrane attack complex (MAC) to investigate roles of the complement terminal pathway in PD-associated peritoneal injury. We intraperitoneally i…

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a home-based renal replacement therapy. Since hospital staff are not often familiar with PD and its complications, PD patients may have an excess risk of developing PD-related peritonitis during hospital admission for unrelated reasons, and the outcome may be affected.
METHODS: We reviewed 371 episodes of hospital-acquired PD peritonitis in our center from 2000 to 2019. Their clinical characteristics and outcomes were compared with 825 episodes that required hospital admission and 1964 episodes that were treated as outpatient.
RESULTS: Hospitalized PD …

Although fungal organisms remain an uncommon cause of peritonitis in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis, it carries significant morbidity and mortality. We describe a 36-year-old woman who presented with peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis caused by dual infection with Staphylococcus caprae and Aspergillus fumigatus and discuss the challenges that were confronted regarding microbiological diagnosis and the selection of optimal antifungal treatment with subsequent successful resumption of peritoneal dialysis.
