Prison systems must embrace disability rights as a human rights imperative.

For decades, India has been a staunch supporter of the human rights regime. However, lately, its positive role has been jeopardised by glaring instances of human rights violations against prisoners, especially those with disabilities. Since the edifice of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the subsequent Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act emphasises non-discrimination and reasonable accommodation, our policies, laws, and procedures need to be aligned with the human rights model of disability. We offer insights into the current challenges and propose disability-i

Incarcerated Women's Perceptions of the Role Model Prison Officer as Procedurally Just.

Studies applying procedural justice to the prison context have largely been quantitative and sampled men. These studies have explored prisoner's procedural justice perceptions of the police and courts, but whether and to what extent their perceptions of the prison officer are associated with procedural justice is unknow. This study extends this research by qualitatively exploring how a sample of women incarcerated in an American prison perceive the role model prison officer and if their perceptions of the model officer are in line with the tenants of procedural justice theory. Findings reveal

Mitigation of COVID-19 During Dental Treatment in a State Prison System.

In congregate living settings when active coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) transmission is present, limiting the scope of dental care to urgent and emergent treatment minimizes exposure risk for patients and staff. Engineering controls to mitigate aerosol production during dental procedures, including enhanced high-volume evacuation, high-efficiency particulate absorbing air filtration, and the use of a dental dam provide additional protection for dental providers and staff. Properly fitted N-95 respirators are of particular importance to limit COVID-19 transmission when SARS-CoV-2 containi

Using Ethics Committees to Justify Force-Feeding Political Prisoners in Israel.

Thousands of Palestinian prisoners are held in Israeli prisons without trial. For some of them, engaging in hunger strikes is the last resort in opposing unlawful detention and inhumane prison conditions. While mainstream bioethics deliberation, reasonable arguments, and international legal and medical professional declarations prohibit force-feeding, local ethical deliberations, professional medical guidelines, and legislation allow the use of medical judgment and clinical ethics committees to force-feed these prisoners. Until now, Israeli physicians have refused to do so, but this may change…

Peer-Facilitated Tobacco Cessation in a Prison Setting: A Proof of Concept Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the vast human and economic costs associated with tobacco use among U.S. inmates, smoking remains a largely ignored public health epidemic. Incarcerated individuals smoke at 3 to 4 times the rate of the general population and face tobacco-related health disparities. PURPOSE: This paper reports results from a single arm, pre/post pilot study designed to test the feasibility and initial effectiveness of an inmate-administered group tobacco cessation intervention within a men's pre-release program run by the Arizona Department of Corrections. METHODS: Corrections staff and i

Behavioral and Emotional Problems of Prisoners' Children Based on the Children's Self-Report.

The aim of the analyses was to investigate the relations between parental incarceration and the levels of behavioral and emotional problems in children of fathers serving prison sentences, based on the children's self-report. We tested a criterion group and two control groups. The criterion group consisted of children whose fathers were in prison. The children in control group I were from complete families; the level of problem behaviors in these families and the level of psychological resiliency in these children were similar to the respective levels in the criterion group. Finally, control g

Sickness Presenteeism in Prison Officers: Risk Factors and Implications for Wellbeing and Productivity.

Sickness presenteeism involves employees continuing to work while unwell. As presenteeism is influenced by contextual and individual difference factors, it is important to assess its prevalence and implications for wellbeing and productivity in different occupational groups. This study examines these issues in a sample of prison officers working in UK institutions. Data were obtained from a survey of 1956 prison officers. Measures assessed the prevalence of and reasons for presenteeism and the perceived impact on job performance, along with mental health and perceptions of workplace safety cli

Prevalence of insomnia and poor sleep quality in the prison population: A systematic review.

Insomnia is a public health concern with several associated negative health-related outcomes. Risk factors for insomnia place the prison population at an increased risk of inadequate sleep. This paper systematically reviewed the literature reporting on the prevalence of insomnia and poor sleep quality in the prison population. Following a comprehensive database search and screening process, 12 studies were eligible for inclusion in this review. Six studies provided prevalence rates for insomnia and nine for poor sleep quality. Varied prevalence rates were found for insomnia (i.e. 26.2%-72.5%)

Correctional Officers' Health Literacy and Practices for Pulmonary Tuberculosis Prevention in Prison.

Tuberculosis (TB) prevention in prisons remains a problem that requires advocacy and partnership action. A correctional officer (CO) is responsible for enforcing the rules and maintaining routines at a prison and has the authority to support TB prevention under the limitations of health manpower in prisons. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to determine the health literacy (HL) and practices of TB prevention and their association among Thailand's COs. A total of 208 COs participated using a random sampling method. A self-administered questionnaire on HL and TB prevention practice…

Protection against Omicron from Vaccination and Previous Infection in a Prison System.

BACKGROUND: Information regarding the protection conferred by vaccination and previous infection against infection with the B.1.1.529 (omicron) variant of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is limited. METHODS: We evaluated the protection conferred by mRNA vaccines and previous infection against infection with the omicron variant in two high-risk populations: residents and staff in the California state prison system. We used a retrospective cohort design to analyze the risk of infection during the omicron wave using data collected from December 24, 2021, through Apri

From there to here: A journey through substance use disorder, prison, and recovery.

This narrative describes my experience with substance use disorder. It includes a trip through the criminal legal system, recovery, higher education, and a career in research. I convey key points from a history of using substances and committing crimes and how these created barriers to collegiate and professional aspirations, despite long-term recovery. The substance use services research field has come to value lived experience such as mine, lowering barriers for people with substance use and criminal histories. I hope that my work, built upon this experience, not only helps improve services,

Prevalence of chronic noncommunicable diseases in the prison system: a public health challenge.

A descriptive, cross-sectional, and quantitative study was conducted in 2019 with 202 participants randomly selected from a male penitentiary, with the application of a questionnaire, clinical care, and laboratory tests to estimate the prevalence of risk factors and noncommunicable chronic diseases in people deprived of their liberty. Data analysis verified associations using Fisher's Exact Test and Chi-square Test. The predominant sociodemographic profile of the participants consisted of less-educated single, black, over 30 males with high prison recidivism. Most were sedentary smokers with h

Social representations of motherhood for women deprived of liberty in the female prison system.

This paper aimed to analyze the social representations of motherhood of pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and those who experienced pregnancy in deprivation of liberty in the prison system. This qualitative study was conducted with 42 women and is grounded on the assumptions of the Theoretical Paradigm of Social Representations. Most participants were young women aged 18-39 (90.5%; n=38) and single (50.0%; n=21); 61.9% (n=26) reported two or more pregnancies and 47.6% (n=20) reported one or more miscarriages. The possible representation of being a mother in prison was crystallized, in seman

Custody and Psychiatric Treatment Hospitals in the prison system: A social death decreed?

This text discusses people with mental disorders in conflict with the law in Brazil and the Custody and Psychiatric Treatment Hospitals, institutions included in the prison system and considered a hybrid between health and justice. When we present the reality in the national context, we show that the Psychiatric Reform did not reach these institutions, and these individuals continue to be stigmatized, and their human rights are violated. We substantiate the need to advance the debate and raise some questions to establish new solutions to tackle the issue and ensure well-structured, scientific

Hunger and torture. Assessing the adequacy of prison food under international law.

BACKGROUND: Deprivation of prisoner food, in terms of its quality and quantity, has generally been accepted as violating the prohibition of torture and related ill-treatment, particularly when combined with other factors (i.e., harmful conditions and practices). Aspects relevant to assessing when and how food provision is considered inadequate, however, remain complex and confusing. This article presents a doctrinal review which consolidates normative understandings of adequate prisoner food. METHOD: A systematic full-text search was made of international and regional normative standards, cas
