DESIGN: We have studied 110 consecutive patients with histologically proven sarcoidosis, first seen in the years 1993-1994 in the Milan Sarcoid Clinic. BACKGROUND: The eye is a sensitive indicator of adverse effects of prenatal alcohol exposure. Anomalies of the eyes and their adnexa are known to be associated with the fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), although long-term effects of these malformations are unknown.

1775 patients with symptomatic cholecystolithiasis were treated by laparoscopic cholecystectomy without selection or contraindications. Complications should be compared with those of conventional cholecystectomy. 73.5% of our patients were female, the median age was 62 years (min. 9, max. 91 years). They presented uncomplicated cholecystolithiasis in 85%, acute cholecystitis in 11% and cirrhotic gallbladder in 4.5%. In order to evaluate the expression of antinuclear antibodies (ANA) in normal elderly individuals over time and clinical significance, a cross-sectional ANA testing in healthy Japanese was performed, followed by annual evaluations of ANA positive aged (> or = 65 years) and a control group. Of the 587 neonates born in ABUTH, Zaria, Nigeria and successfully followed up, 99 were clinically jaundiced (16.9%). DESIGN: Cohort study where all patients with new or incident peptic ulcers in a well defined population were registered for a seven year period. To assess the usefulness of extended cervical mediastinoscopy (ECM) in the staging of bronchogenic carcinoma, an ECM was performed prospectively in 50 patients with bronchogenic carcinoma of the left lung. The ECM was used after evaluation of disease operability and computed tomographic findings, and was performed simultaneously with standard cervical mediastinoscopy. In ECM, using the same cervical incision as in a standard cervical mediastinoscopy, dissection is performed behind the anterior face of the sternum. The aortic arch is reached at the level of the origin of the innominate artery.

In a prospective study, antiepileptic drugs were discontinued in 264 children with epilepsy after a mean seizure-free interval of 2.9 years.
