Beyond resistance: social factors in the general public response to pandemic influenza.

BACKGROUND: Influencing the general public response to pandemics is a public health priority. There is a prevailing view, however, that the general public is resistant to communications on pandemic influenza and that behavioural responses to the 2009/10 H1N1 pandemic were not sufficient. Using qualitative methods, this paper investigates how members of the general public respond to pandemic influenza and the hygiene, social isolation and other measures proposed by public health. Going beyond the commonly deployed notion that the general public is resistant to public health communications, this

Data altruism and the "consent" question: a study into the "consent" models used under the GDPR and how the data altruism mechanism can act as a potential solution for the research community in the reuse of health data.

INTRODUCTION: The General Data Protection Regulation ("GDPR") legal basis for obtaining consent for the processing of personal data for research purposes, where those purposes cannot be fully specified in advance, is provided for in Articles 6, 7 and Recital 33. However, GDPR's requirements for obtaining consent, as to the secondary use and sharing of data in research, have been argued to have generated confusion, whilst the conflicts between the Regulation itself, its practical application and research ethics are well-documented (1). The requirements for "informed consent", as defined within

Psychological factors in adherence to COVID-19 public health restrictions in Italy: A path model testing depressed mood, anxiety, and co-rumination via cellphone.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the success of major non-pharmaceutical interventions, such as quarantine orders, has depended upon robust rates of citizens' adherence to protocols. Thus, it is critical to public health for research to illuminate factors that affect compliance with contagion-mitigating practices. Previous research has examined sociodemographic factors and aspects of psychological distress as correlates of adherence to public health guidelines. The current study expanded this research to investigate the psychosocial process of co-rumination, which has been identified in previous

A Position Statement on Mpox as a Sexually Transmitted Disease.

The global outbreak of mpox virus constituted an international public health emergency. Reports have highlighted (1) a temporal association between sexual activity and mpox, (2) an association between specific sexual practices and location of lesion development, (3) a high frequency of sexual practices conferring risk for other sexually transmitted infections among cases of mpox, (4) that mpox virus can be isolated from sexual fluids, (4) that isolated virus is infectious, and (5) a high frequency of anogenital lesions prior to disease dissemination suggesting direct inoculation during sexual

Barriers and Constraints in Scientific Manuscript Preparation Among Nephrologists: Insights From India.

Introduction: Medical research shapes public health actions, emphasising the need for greater investments in health. Despite a surge in scientific publications, disparities exist in authorship from low-income countries and among female researchers. Addressing these gaps is vital for studying real-world health outcomes and promoting universal healthcare delivery. Methods: A descriptive quantitative study using an online questionnaire to gather data from Indian nephrologists and nephrology fellows was conducted by members of Women in Nephrology, India, from September 2023 to December 2023. The s

An uncertain dominion: Irish psychiatry, methadone, and the treatment of opiate abuse.

This paper investigates some productive ambiguities around the medical administration of methadone in the Republic of Ireland. The tensions surrounding methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) are outlined, as well as the sociohistorical context in which a serious heroin addiction problem in Ireland developed. Irish psychiatry intervened in this situation, during a time of institutional change, debates concerning the nature of addiction, moral panics concerning heroin addiction in Irish society and the recent boom in the Irish economy, known popularly as the Celtic Tiger. A particular history of th

Messages from the Malaysian Diabetes Registries on Diabetes Care in Malaysian public healthcare facilities.

A persistent and increasing prevalence of diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes mellitus has recently been reported in the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2015. This commentary recapitulates the relevant and valuable lessons in the Malaysian national diabetes registries to inform the healthcare stakeholders and policy makers on potential areas of clinical practice improvement and future researches. Under performance of the process measures and sub-optimal control of HbA1c, blood pressure and lipids profile were prevalent (<40% achieved treatment targets). Although these had improved slightly

[Do reproductive health care practices create a risk of HIV, HVB, and HVC transmission? Case studies in Cambodia].

The processes involved in nosocomial transmission of HIV, HBV, and HCV nosocomial transmission have not been studied at a global level; little is known about them or about the underlying social and cultural logic that contributes to this transmission. Hospital hygiene has mainly been studied from a biological perspective until now. However, hospital hygiene is shaped by norms and sociocultural representations, and the increase or limitation of disease transmission always takes place within social relations. We need to analyse the practices related to hygiene from a cultural perspective, especi

Bright days, dark nights: translating science on the non-visual effects of light into public health guidance.

BACKGROUND: Light is a daily environmental exposure that can influence circadian timing, sleep, alertness, mood, and cognition, yet public health guidance still focuses mainly on optical-radiation hazards rather than healthy patterns of visible light and darkness. ANALYSIS: This policy brief translates recent evidence and expert consensus on the non-visual effects of ocular light exposure into public health guidance. The evidence supports a practical 24-h pattern: brighter light during the morning and daytime, lower light in the evening, and darkness or near-darkness during sleep. This princi

Making public health guidance trustworthy: Public Health Sensegiving under uncertainty.

Public health emergencies confront officials with the challenge of communicating guidance that evolves as scientific evidence and institutional recommendations change. Although institutional trust is associated with adherence to public health measures, less is known about the interpretive and communicative work through which public officials seek to make changing guidance understandable, legitimate, and credible. Drawing on a comparative qualitative study of Brazil and Japan, this article examines trust-building communication among public officials involved in implementation, coordination, and

Bioterrorism and the people: how to vaccinate a city against panic.

Bioterrorism policy discussions and response planning efforts have tended to discount the capacity of the public to participate in the response to an act of bioterrorism, or they have assumed that local populations would impede an effective response. Fears of mass panic and social disorder underlie this bias. Although it is not known how the population will react to an unprecedented act of bioterrorism, experience with natural and technological disasters and disease outbreaks indicates a pattern of generally effective and adaptive collective action. Failure to involve the public as a key partn

Identifying and mitigating the public health consequences of meta-ignorance about "Long COVID" risks.

OBJECTIVES: While past work studies public concern about "Long COVID," fewer have asked what the public knows and/or purports to know about Long COVID. This is an important oversight, as low knowledge and/or "meta-ignorance" (Dunning Kruger Effect; DKE) concerning Long COVID might undermine public willingness to take action to protect themselves and others from endemic COVID-19. STUDY DESIGN: In a nationally representative survey of US adults, we measure the correspondence between Americans' objective and perceived Long COVID knowledge. METHODS: We estimate a series of multivariate regressio

Gaps in the HIV self-testing cascade among people with HIV in Taiwan: Usage patterns, barriers, and public health implications.

BACKGROUND: Information on the usage patterns of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) self-tests (HIV-STs), the factors influencing these patterns, and reasons for delays between positive HIV-ST results and confirmatory testing in people with HIV in Taiwan is lacking. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, cross-sectional survey in Taiwan over the period from February 2023 to December 2024 to examine the use of HIV-STs among individuals who received a diagnosis of HIV from 2017 to 2024. We employed exploratory factor and multivariable analyses to identify the barriers hindering and the factors in

Self-Measured Blood Pressure Monitoring at Home: A Joint Policy Statement From the American Heart Association and American Medical Association.

The diagnosis and management of hypertension, a common cardiovascular risk factor among the general population, have been based primarily on the measurement of blood pressure (BP) in the office. BP may differ considerably when measured in the office and when measured outside of the office setting, and higher out-of-office BP is associated with increased cardiovascular risk independent of office BP. Self-measured BP monitoring, the measurement of BP by an individual outside of the office at home, is a validated approach for out-of-office BP measurement. Several national and international hypert
