Neighborhood Contemporary Redlining and Racial Mortgage Lending Bias and Cardiovascular Outcomes in Women With Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Studies have demonstrated neighborhood structural inequities are associated with cardiovascular outcomes among breast cancer survivors. We investigated the associations between bias in mortgage lending practices (contemporary redlining and racial lending bias) and cardiovascular outcomes in women with breast cancer. METHODS: Using the SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results)-Medicare database, we identified 51 007 Black and White women diagnosed with breast cancer between 2010 and 2014 with follow-up through 2020. We used Home Mortgage Disclosure Act data to calculate ce

Socioeconomic privilege and political ideology are associated with racial disparity in COVID-19 vaccination.

Vaccine uptake is critical for mitigating the impact of COVID-19 in the United States, but structural inequities pose a serious threat to progress. Racial disparities in vaccination persist despite the increased availability of vaccines. We ask what factors are associated with such disparities. We combine data from state, federal, and other sources to estimate the relationship between social determinants of health and racial disparities in COVID-19 vaccinations at the county level. Analyzing vaccination data from 19 April 2021, when nearly half of the US adult population was at least partially

Use of segregation indices, Townsend Index, and air toxics data to assess lifetime cancer risk disparities in metropolitan Charleston, South Carolina, USA.

BACKGROUND: Studies have demonstrated a relationship between segregation and level of education, occupational opportunities, and risk behaviors, yet a paucity of research has elucidated the association between racial residential segregation, socioeconomic deprivation, and lifetime cancer risk. OBJECTIVES: We examined estimated lifetime cancer risk from air toxics by racial composition, segregation, and deprivation in census tracts in Metropolitan Charleston. METHODS: Segregation indices were used to measure the distribution of groups of people from different races within neighborhoods. The T

Male Asian international students' perceived racial discrimination, masculine identity, and subjective masculinity stress: a moderated mediation model.

This study examined male Asian international college students' perceptions of racial discrimination, subjective masculinity stress, centrality of masculine identity, and psychological distress by testing a moderated mediation model. Participants were 160 male Asian international college students from 2 large public universities. Participants' perceived racial discrimination was positively related to their subjective masculinity stress only at high (but not low) levels of masculine identity centrality. Additionally, subjective masculinity stress was positively related to psychological distress,

Racial discrimination and posttraumatic stress symptoms as pathways to sexual HIV risk behaviors among urban Black heterosexual men.

In light of evidence that racial discrimination and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are neither rare nor extraordinary for many Black urban men, we examined the relationship between everyday racial discrimination and sexual HIV risk behaviors in a predominantly low-income sample of 526 urban Black heterosexually identified men; 64% of whom were unemployed and 55% of whom reported a history of incarceration. We tested the hypothesis that PTSS would mediate the relationship between everyday racial discrimination and sexual risk. Participants in the predominantly low-income urban sample rang

Implicit race bias decreases the similarity of neural representations of black and white faces.

Implicit race bias has been shown to affect decisions and behaviors. It may also change perceptual experience by increasing perceived differences between social groups. We investigated how this phenomenon may be expressed at the neural level by testing whether the distributed blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) patterns representing Black and White faces are more dissimilar in participants with higher implicit race bias. We used multivoxel pattern analysis to predict the race of faces participants were viewing. We successfully predicted the race of the faces on the basis of BOLD activatio

Developmental differences in the impact of racial discrimination on depression and anxiety among Black youth: Examining rumination as a mechanism.

Experiences of racial discrimination are pervasive among Black youth, resulting in psychosocial problems such as depression and anxiety. Rumination plays a key role in linking racial discrimination and internalizing concerns. Developmental age has also been shown to influence the extent to which racial discrimination and rumination impact mental health; however, studies have yet to explore the interplay between these factors. This study examined the association between racial discrimination and internalizing concerns among Black youth, whether racial discrimination was indirectly associated wi

Ethnicity and detention: are Black and minority ethnic (BME) groups disproportionately detained under the Mental Health Act 2007?

PURPOSE: There is substantial evidence to suggest that Black and minority ethnic (BME) patients are disproportionately detained under the Mental Health Act (MHA). We examined ethnic differences in patients assessed for detention and explored the effect of ethnicity after controlling for confounders. METHODS: A prospective study of all MHA assessments conducted in 1 year (April 2009-March 2010) within Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust, UK. Proportion of assessments and detentions within denominator population of service users and regional populations were calculated. Multi

Race and gender discrimination in the Marines.

Although women of color have been hypothesized to experience double jeopardy in the form of chronic exposure to both race-based (RBD) and gender-based discrimination (GBD; Beal, 1970), few empirical investigations that examine both RBD and GBD in multiple comparison groups have been conducted. In addition to being one of the only simultaneous examinations of RBD and GBD in multiple comparison groups, the current study includes both self-report and objective behavioral data to examine the independent and interactive effects of both forms of discrimination. This study is also the first of its ki

BLACK-ARTS: a qualitative study exploring the insights of black young people with psychiatric disorders and the uses of creative arts therapies to improve mental well-being.

BACKGROUND: Black people experience persistent inequalities in mental health outcomes, access and care quality compared with their white counterparts. These disparities are compounded by structural racism and a lack of culturally competent care within National Health Service (NHS) services. Creative arts therapies (CATs), including music, art, dance and drama therapy, may offer culturally relevant, non-verbal approaches to mental health support for this population. OBJECTIVE: To explore how black young people with mental health challenges and NHS clinicians perceive the usefulness and cultura…

Barriers and Facilitators to Early Postpartum Blood Pressure Follow-Up After Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy: An Integrative Review.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are a leading cause of preventable maternal morbidity and mortality in the United St … nt. DISCUSSION: Disparities in early postpartum BP follow-up are rooted in intersecting systems of racism, classism, and structural disadvantage. These findings align with prior research showing the benefits of remote BP monitoring but extend the literature by identifying populations that remain excluded. Characteristics of Restraint Use on Inpatient Medical/Surgical and Psychiatric Units at a Tertiary Care County Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Racism contributes to worse patient care and health outcomes in the USA. Disparities in restraint application have been documented in the emergency department context, yet inpatient medical/surgical and psychiatric settings are less studied. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this analysis is to determine factors associated with restraint use within the inpatient medical/surgical and psychiatric populations at a tertiary, academic medical center. We predict that Black, American Indian, Native American, or Alaska Native, or Hispanic/Latinx racialized identity, age, presence of med…
