Online education for rare genetic diseases: a systematic review.

IntroductionRare genetic diseases are, collectively, not in fact rare. However, educational opportunities focused on rare genetic disease can be limited. The Internet has increased the availability of education related to rare genetic disease and is accessible to a diverse range of people who seek out such information, including healthcare professionals, researchers, students, patients, and the public.PurposeTo assess the potential educational outreach of the Internet, this systematic literature review will appraise the landscape of what education for rare genetic disease is available online,

Potential problems and solutions of opioid-based treatment in neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS): a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Rates of neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) have paralleled the rise of opioid use during pregnancy. While short-term phenotypic symptoms of NOWS are well defined, molecular implications and long-term effects are not well understood. Preferred and first-line of treatment for NOWS includes non-pharmacological interventions; however, more than half of the NOWS neonates will need pharmacologics, with opioids as the primary pharmacological treatment. While effective at reducing symptoms, treating NOWS with opioids is paradoxical given that molecular and long-term developmenta

Oral Health Related Quality of Life Changes in Standard Cleft and Surgery Patients- A clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Malocclusions are expected to affect subjective attraction, social recognition, and intellect. For dentofacial deformities, functional concerns can also arise. The previous research has established a gradient on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) scores through malocclusion intensity, particularly in the social and emotional realms. This study is used to assess the quality of oral health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of sixty patients began orthodontic therapy at a tertiary-care facility. Treatment in the orthodontic clinic is restricted to serious malocclusions. The s

Hypodontia and its impact on a young person's quality of life, esthetics, and self-esteem.

INTRODUCTION: The impact of hypodontia on quality of life is a relatively unexplored area. The limited research shows that the issues of importance for people with hypodontia can vary from those of patients undergoing routine orthodontic treatment. This research aimed to use generic and condition-specific scales to evaluate the impact of hypodontia on a young person's oral health-related quality of life, self-esteem, and aesthetics. METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional hospital-based study recruited 97 participants with hypodontia, aged 11-18 years. The following questionnaires were comp

Alveolar macrophage dysregulation in Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome type 1.

RATIONALE: Individuals with Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome type 1 (HPS-1), an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by defective biogenesis of lysosome-related organelles, develop an accelerated form of progressive fibrotic lung disease. The etiology of pulmonary fibrosis associated with HPS-1 is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the potential pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis in HPS-1, lung cells and proteins from individuals with HPS-1 were studied. METHODS: Forty-one subjects with HPS-1 with and without pulmonary fibrosis were evaluated with pulmonary function tests, high-resolution co

Can gestation be considered as trauma in adolescent girls: post-traumatic stress disorder in teen pregnancy.

Although post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adolescent pregnancy has been reported at high rates in the limited research in this area, no studies have evaluated gestation as trauma in teens. This study, aimed to evaluate PTSD in this high risk group. All pregnant adolescents who presented to our obstetrics and gynaecology clinics in a one-year period were invited to participate in the study. Adolescents with a history of domestic or dating violence, rape, and sexual abuse were excluded. PTSD was rated using the Child Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder-Reaction Index. When the pregnant adoles

A web-based knowledge management system integrating Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine for relational medical diagnosis.

This article presents the design of a web-based knowledge management system as a training and research tool for the exploration of key relationships between Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine, in order to facilitate relational medical diagnosis integrating these mainstream healing modalities. The main goal of this system is to facilitate decision-making processes, while developing skills and creating new medical knowledge. Traditional Chinese Medicine can be considered as an ancient relational knowledge-based approach, focusing on balancing interrelated human functions to reach a healthy

Investigation of the impact of rs3025343 near the dopamine ß-hydroxylase (DBH) gene on reward-related responses within the mesolimbic dopamine system.

OBJECTIVES: Recent research focused on the impact of Neandertal alleles on dopamine-related brain traits. A joint measure of these alleles was reported to be associated with lower dopamine synthesis, presumably leading to reduced activity of the reward system. To isolate single variants, we selected rs3025343 near the dopamine beta hydroxylase gene, which contains a likely introgressed allele. rs3025343 is an established variant for reward system-related psychiatric traits. METHODS: We hypothesised that the rs3025343 minor allele reduces responses to conditioned reward stimuli in the mesolimb

High production of egc2-related staphylococcal enterotoxins caused a food poisoning outbreak.

Staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) produced by enterotoxigenic Staphylococcus aureus in food cause staphylococcal food poisoning. We recently reported a foodborne outbreak due to S. aureus harboring new SE/SE-like (SEl) genes (seg, sei, sem, sen, seo, and selu) related to enterotoxin gene cluster (egc) 2 as with other research groups. However, the pathogenicity of SEs production remains unclear. Therefore, we herein investigated egc2-related SEs production from S. aureus isolates and leftover food items during a foodborne outbreak using a sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay suitable for

Genome-wide association meta-analysis identifies five novel loci for age-related hearing impairment.

Previous research has shown that genes play a substantial role in determining a person's susceptibility to age-related hearing impairment. The existing studies on this subject have different results, which may be caused by difficulties in determining the phenotype or the limited number of participants involved. Here, we have gathered the largest sample to date (discovery n = 9,675; replication n = 10,963; validation n = 356,141), and examined phenotypes that represented low/mid and high frequency hearing loss on the pure tone audiogram. We identified 7 loci that were either replicated and/or v

Movement under uncertainty: the effects of the rubber-hand illusion vary along the nonclinical autism spectrum.

Recent research has begun to investigate sensory processing in relation to nonclinical variation in traits associated with the autism spectrum disorders (ASD). We propose that existing accounts of autistic perception can be augmented by considering a role for individual differences in top-down expectations for the precision of sensory input, related to the processing of state-dependent levels of uncertainty. We therefore examined ASD-like traits in relation to the rubber-hand illusion: an experimental paradigm that typically elicits crossmodal integration of visual, tactile, and proprioceptive

Salivary microRNA as a prospective tool for concussion diagnosis and management: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Despite increased efforts directed toward research, concussions are a growing concern and can be a complex injury for healthcare professionals to manage. Current practices are largely dependent on patients self-reporting symptoms and a clinical assessment, which uses objective tools that lack effectiveness. With the demonstrated effects of concussions, it is imperative that a more valid or reliable objective tool, like a clinical biomarker, be identified to improve outcomes. One potential biomarker that has shown promise is salivary microRNA. However, there is no objective consensu

Trained assistance dogs for people with dementia: a systematic review.

This systematic review investigated evidence for the effectiveness of trained assistance dogs as an intervention and support for people with dementia. Peer-reviewed articles were retrieved from multiple databases (SCOPUS, Web of Science, and Google Scholar). Reference lists of the articles retrieved were also screened to identify key authors for inclusion. Articles were subject to a quality review, and the results synthesised to address the research questions. Both qualitative and quantitative data were reported. There was evidence of the potential positive effects of dog-assisted intervention

Brain connectivity during Alzheimer's disease progression and its cognitive impact in a transgenic rat model.

The research of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in its early stages and its progression till symptomatic onset is essential to understand the pathology and investigate new treatments. Animal models provide a helpful approach to this research, since they allow for controlled follow-up during the disease evolution. In this work, transgenic TgF344-AD rats were longitudinally evaluated starting at 6 months of age. Every 3 months, cognitive abilities were assessed by a memory-related task and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was acquired. Structural and functional brain networks were estimated and charact

A Different Conversation: Psychological Research and the Problem of Self in Autism.

Observations about peculiarities in the autistic population concerning type and frequency of references to subjective states, and lack of perspective taking, have been on the whole referred to as the paradox of the autistic self, i.e. a co-presence of ego-centeredness and weak self-referentiality (Lombardo & Baron Cohen 2010). Prevalent approaches in autism ascribe these peculiarities to high order disfunctions caused by neurological factors, such as defective self-encoding processes. Two narratives told by an adult man with Asperger during counselling are examined with Conversation Analysis;

Therapists' Perceptions of Their Encounter With Sex Offenders.

Despite the increasing interest in therapists' responses to their encounter with sex offenders, there is a lack of research on their subjective perceptions of this encounter and on their experience working with this client population. The study presented in this article is part of a larger qualitative research project conducted among 19 social workers (12 were women and 7 were men; their ages ranged from 30 to 66 years; 15 of them were Jewish and 4 were Arab). In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted to examine their attitudes toward and perceptions of their encounter with sex offend
