The Role of Sleep in Cardiovascular Disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sleep is an important component of cardiovascular (CV) health. This review summarizes the complex relationship between sleep and CV disease (CVD). Additionally, we describe the data supporting the treatment of sleep disturbances in preventing and treating CVD. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent guidelines recommend screening for obstructive sleep apnea in patients with atrial fibrillation. New data continues to demonstrate the importance of sleep quality and duration for CV health. There is a complex bidirectional relationship between sleep health and CVD. Sleep disturbances have syst

Sleep stability in isolated rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, Parkinson's disease, and dementia with Lewy bodies.

BACKGROUND: Non-REM sleep symptoms remain poorly understood in alpha-synucleinopathies. AIMS: The aims of the study were to compare sleep stability and transitions, arousals, and sleep cycle structure between isolated rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (iRBD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sleep transition and stability measures were assessed in one-night video-polysomnography records. Transition measures were the number of shifts between Wake and REM, Wake and NREM, and REM and NREM. Stability measures were the number of

Sleep Disorders in Patients with Tics: Towards Personalized Care for Tourette Syndrome.

Background/Objectives: Tourette syndrome and other chronic tic disorders are neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by intermittent motor/phonic tics and frequent behavioral comorbidity. Poor sleep quality is often reported by patients with tic disorders; however, little is known about the prevalence and clinical correlates of disruption in sleep physiology. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review of clinical studies evaluating sleep using at least one validated sleep outcome (questionnaire, polysomnography, or coded clinical diagnosis). Results: Despite high heterogeneity in

Effectiveness of a sleep disorders center: a 9-month follow-up.

To assess the usefulness of a sleep disorders center the authors sent follow-up questionnaires to patients and referring physicians 9 months after each diagnostic evaluation. Findings suggest that sleep disorders centers provide a useful diagnostic service, especially for patients suffering from excessive daytime sleepiness. This problem usually has a medical etiology, and sleep laboratory evaluations seemed crucial for about two-thirds of all such patients. Insomnia was more likely to involve behavioral/psychological factors; about 30% of the patients with long-term, serious insomnia seemed t

Hypocretin-1 deficiency in a girl with ROHHAD syndrome.

Rapid-onset obesity with hypothalamic dysfunction, hypoventilation, and autonomic dysregulation (ROHHAD) is a rare and complex pediatric syndrome, essentially caused by dysfunction of 3 vital systems regulating endocrine, respiratory, and autonomic nervous system functioning. The clinical spectrum of ROHHAD is broad, but sleep/wake disorders have received relatively little attention so far, although the central hypothalamic dysfunction would make the occurrence of sleep symptoms likely. In this case report, we expand the phenotype of ROHHAD with a number of striking sleep symptoms that togethe

Orexinergic modulation by Uwhangchungsimwon restores homeostasis of GABA/BDNF signaling in insomnia-depression comorbidity.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Uwhangchungsimwon (UCW) is a traditional East Asian multi-herbal formulation, used for managing stroke, convulsions, and mental confusion. Given the close association between stress, sleep disturbance, and mood disorders, UCW may hold therapeutic potential for insomnia-depression comorbidity, although its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to explore the therapeutic potential of UCW for insomnia-depression comorbidity by targeting the orexinergic and GABAergic systems and identifying its bioactive compounds. METHODS: In vivo experiments were

Sleep quality and duration are related to microvascular function: the Amsterdam Growth and Health Longitudinal Study.

Sleep and sleep disorders are related to cardiovascular disease, and microvascular function is an early cardiovascular disease marker. Therefore, the relationship of sleep (measured in sleep quality and duration) with microvascular function was examined in healthy adults. Sleep quality was assessed with the validated Sleep Wake Experience List (SWEL) questionnaire. Duration of sleep was self-reported in an additional question. Microvascular function was measured using nailfold capillaroscopy. Linear regression analyses were used to examine the relationship between sleep and microvascular funct

Assessing the Role of Locus Coeruleus Degeneration in Essential Tremor and Parkinson's Disease with Sleep Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated the importance of the locus coeruleus (LC) in sleep-wake regulation. Both essential tremor (ET) and Parkinson's disease (PD) share common sleep disorders, such as poor quality of sleep (QoS). LC pathology is a feature of both diseases. A question arises regarding the contribution of LC degeneration to the occurrence of poor QoS. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between LC impairment and sleep disorders in ET and PD patients. METHODS: A total of 83 patients with ET, 124 with PD, and 83 healthy individuals were recruited and divided into ET/

Sleep Disturbances in PTSD: Insight from Clinical Studies.

The review article on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and sleep provides a comprehensive overview of circadian genes in PTSD-related sleep disturbances, drawing insights from patient studies. PTSD is often accompanied by significant sleep-related disturbances, which can manifest as nightmares, disrupted sleep continuity, and alterations in sleep architecture, particularly changes in Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep-regulation. Despite the well-documented symptomatic complaints of poor sleep among PTSD patients, the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. This review underscores the

Temporal network of experience sampling methodology identifies sleep disturbance as a central symptom in generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: A temporal network of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) symptoms could provide valuable understanding of the occurrence and maintenance of GAD. We aim to obtain an exploratory conceptualization of temporal GAD network and identify the central symptom. METHODS: A sample of participants (n = 115) with elevated GAD-7 scores (Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-Item Questionnaire [GAD-7] ≥ 10) participated in an online daily diary study in which they reported their GAD symptoms based on DSM-5 diagnostic criteria (eight symptoms in total) for 50 consecutive days. We used a multilevel VAR m

Daytime sleepiness in insomnia: Are we focusing on what truly matters?

Insomnia, the most prevalent sleep disorder, is commonly associated with other mental and somatic disorders, making it a significant health concern. It is characterized by nighttime symptoms and daytime dysfunction, with sleepiness being a potential criterion for the latter. Sleepiness is a normal physiological state that is typically experienced near usual bedtime, in normal circumstances. In insomnia, it seems somewhat logical the idea that there is significant daytime sleepiness. However, the topic has been the subject of various discussions in sleep medicine, with studies yielding contradi

The Park Sleep subtype in Parkinson's disease: from concept to clinic.

INTRODUCTION: The heterogeneity of Parkinson's disease (PD) is evident from descriptions of non-motor (NMS) subtypes and Park Sleep, originally identified by Sauerbier et al. 2016, is one such clinical subtype associated with the predominant clinical presentation of sleep dysfunctions including excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), along with insomnia. AREAS COVERED: A literature search was conducted using the PubMed, Medline, Embase, and Web of Science databases, accessed between 1 February 2023 and 28 March 2023. In this review, we describe the clinical subtype of Park Sleep and related 'test

Objective sleep outcomes in randomized-controlled trials in persons with substance use disorders: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Improving sleep health is an important target for substance use disorder (SUD) research. However, there is little guidance for SUD researchers regarding the use of technologies to objectively assess sleep outcomes in randomized-controlled trials (RCTs). This systematic review aimed to describe the use of technologies to objectively measure sleep outcomes in RCTs conducted in persons with SUDs, in order to inform future sleep intervention studies in SUD populations. METHODS: This study was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) on May

Can We Predict Dissociative Experiences Based on Inner Speech in Nonclinical Population by Mediating Role of Sleep Disturbance?

Dissociative experiences include various experiences and behaviors that can cause people to feel disturbed and disconnected from reality. Individuals with dissociative experiences may exhibit various symptoms, particularly in their inner speech. The present study examined how we can predict dissociative experiences based on inner speech in nonclinical populations by mediating the role of sleep disturbance. In this cross-sectional study, data were collected from university students aged 18 to 40 years ( N = 400). They were asked to complete online self-report questionnaires: Varieties of the In
